GRADUATE CERTIFICATE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL
COURSE OUTLINEThe Graduate Certificate of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control offers an introduction to core
concepts and skills in infectious disease prevention and control, including: epidemiology, statistical
research methods and quantitative analysis of health data. Students will explore key public health
principles and practices aimed at preventing illness and protecting community health.
This course is delivered by Menzies School of Health Research. Menzies has an outstanding
record in infectious disease research in Indigenous and global contexts. In this innovative research
environment, you will learn from experts in the field how to describe and analyse population health
problems, apply epidemiological methods, identify causes and propose solutions.
Graduates will be able to:

> Critically appraise public health evidence and identify effective responses to complex health and
social issues
> Investigate and address the determinants of communicable diseases
> Utilise appropriate epidemiological and statistical methods to describe and analyse population
health trends
> Apply epidemiological and statistical knowledge and skills to a range of population health problems
> Utilise monitoring and surveillance systems to protect the health of populations
This course can help you develop your skills in your current profession in the health sector or open doors

COURSE STRUCTUREStudents are required to complete the following two compulsory core units, and a choice of two specialist elective units, totalling 40 credit
points, full-time, in semester 2.
CORE UNITSBiostatisticsThe purpose of this unit is to provide students with an understanding
of essential statistical concepts and their application to
epidemiological studies. The emphasis of this unit is the application
of appropriate statistical methods and interpretation of analyses,
rather than the technical and computing aspects. Upon completion
of this unit a student will be able to read and interpret the statistical
elements of the public health literature more competently.
Epidemiology and Control of Communicable DiseasesThis unit extends students’ skills and knowledge in
epidemiology, relevant to the major infectious diseases of
humans. It introduces strategies for communicable
disease control and surveillance, and methods for
determining and interpreting normal epidemiological and
numerical measurements for communicable diseases.
