It’s Better Buddies week! Have fun creating your selfie today.

READING WRITING MATHS INQUIRY/OTHER Learning intention Learning intention Learning intention Learning intention Focus: Predicting We are learning how to make accurate predictions when reading.

Focus: WOW Writing We are learning how to be creative writers.

Focus: Money We are learning to understand how to estimate money to the nearest dollar.

Focus: Buddies We are learning to be better buddies.

Success Criteria Success Criteria Success Criteria Success Criteria I can use clues from the text to make predictions about why characters act a certain way. I can use clues from the text to make predictions about what will happen next.

I can select the correct genre to suit the purpose of my writing. I can write for a sustained period of time.

I can round 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10. I can estimate and add money effectively using my knowledge of tens and hundreds. I can round money to the nearest dollar.

I can create a funny better buddy. I can write a positive message to my buddy.

Task Task Task Task ACTIVITY 1: Read for 15 minutes independently – You can read a book of your choice from home, or a story from Sunshine Online, Reading Eggs/Eggspress or Kids News. Prediction is an important comprehension strategy. It helps us to be engaged in the text and understand it better. We need to use clues from the text and our prior knowledge to make accurate predictions.

ACTIVITY: WOW WRITING This is your chance to write about anything you like. You may choose anything that interests you. WOW writing should go for approx. 35 minutes on a topic and genre of your choice. (For example: narrative, information report, persuasive, poem, procedure etc.) Really focus on your writing goal and the 6+1 Writing Traits. Don’t forget to edit and revise when you are done.

WARM-UP: Watch the video on collection of coins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXgOSlSrfJY

When we’re at the shops buying a few items or in a restaurant, we often “estimate” the total amount in our head. In order to do this, we use the ‘rounding up/down’ strategies.

If a number is 50 cents or more, then you round up to the next dollar. Example: $3.60 to the nearest dollar will become $4.00.

The Better Buddies values are caring for others, friendliness, respect, valuing difference, including others and responsibility. Better Buddies has a mascot named Buddy Bear. He is a fun-loving and caring purple bear who helps children feel safe and cared for when they are at school.

ACTIVITY 2: Look at the picture (see below for larger image) and answer the following questions using full sentences:

• 1. What kind of monster is this?

• 2. Where did it come from?

• 3. Has it been here before?

• 4. What do you think the kitten is dreaming of?

• 5. What is the monster going to do?

• 6. What do you think will happen next?

• Continue this story – include an unexpected twist. Make sure your answers are appropriate for

school.

If the number is less than 50 cents, then you round down to the nearest dollar. Example: $5.30 to the nearest dollar will become $5.00. If you round off $135.90 to the nearest dollar, 90 cents rounds up to the next dollar, so $135.90 becomes $136.00. ACTIVITY: Estimate the following amounts to the nearest dollar:

1. $1.80 = 2. $3.20 = 3. $4.60 = 4. $6.90 = 5. $7.10 = 6. $89.50 = 7. $76.45 = 8. $32.95 = 9. $129.55= 10. $412.05 =

ACTIVITY: Create a buddy selfie by using the ‘create a selfie’ template below. Take a picture of your face and cut it out. Colour in the template and cut around the dotted lines. Paste your face in between the hat and the body.

Write a message to your buddy underneath your Buddy creation. We will be sharing these with our buddies when we return on-site.

Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Answer questions 1 to 5 only.

WARM-UP: Mr Shaam has $50 in his wallet. He has 3 notes and 3 coins. What notes and coins does he have in his wallet?

Remember the decimal point separates the dollars from the cents. Eg.1. In $24.30 – 24 represents the dollars and 30 represents the cents. Eg 2. Look at the difference between $1.05 and $1.50. In $1.05, we have $1.00 and 5 cents. Whereas in $1.50, we have $1.00 and 50 cents. When solving problems with money, you need to remember that:

• 100 cents = $1.00

• 2 fifty cent coins = $1.00

• 5 twenty cent coins = $1.00

• 10 ten cent coins = $1.00

ACTIVITY: Hint: Make sure you add your amounts first before you calculate the change.

Ninja Warrior!

At school in P.E, we have been learning all the skills used in Ninja Warrior. This week at home, you are going to continue practising some of these skills. Follow the activities below to practise, so when we get back to school you are ready to finish our unit. Click me for a ninja warrior warm up!

Hand stand practice: Practise your hand stands at home, building your upper body strength to hold your body weight. Remember to practise up against a wall. Level 1: Front support, walk your legs up the wall, move your hands closer to the wall. Level 2: Face the wall, donkey kick your legs over your head, rest your feet up against a wall to help you balance. Level 3: Don’t use a wall, hands up above your head, donkey kick your legs over and keep your legs straight together. Need help? https://youtu.be/xS3uo_UHwbQ

Ninja Warrior Course: Use the items in your home/in your backyard to make your own course! Please check with an adult to see if everything you want to use is safe! Before you start making your course, come up with a plan and make up some rules. e.g. You can’t touch the ground, you can only touch the ground in certain areas etc. For some inspiration, watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcQojvSy_QM&ab_channel=WhatLylahDoes

Play the Pencils Watch these videos: https://youtu.be/Us6C2dyrVBA https://youtu.be/pllrQAcsZqc Have a pencil or texta in each hand and create a beat by tapping the pencils/textas on a flat surface, such as a table. Make a tapping beat for 6 beats. Loop your beat, so it is a continuous tap. Challenge yourself by adding some fast drumming style taps!

Magic Magnet Games When we’re back in class, we will continue to do some more investigating with MAGNETS.

But for now, let’s try to make a fun Magnetic Maze game. Check out this video on how to make one: https://www.cbc.ca/parents/play/view/bookaboo-paper-plate-magnet-maze TOP TIPS: You do not need fancy magnets – you could use a fridge magnet and a paper clip. You could also just do your maze on a piece of blank paper if you don’t have any paper plates. Please bring in your creations to share with your classmates and ME!!!

Have fun my STEM Superstars ☺
