Grade 3 Overview
Unit 1: We are Chelsea!
Essential Questions: What’s my school like? How do I use Spanish in my school?
Students will bring Spanish to Chelsea. They will start learning how to interact
with their peers and teachers in Spanish (both inside and outside of the Spanish
classroom). They will also learn how to describe basic features of their school in the
target language. At the end of the unit, students will have an opportunity to compare
their experience at Chelsea with that of a student in Spain.
Unit 2: Let’s Celebrate!
Essential Questions: How do I celebrate? How do other people celebrate?
Students will start the unit by building a foundation of useful calendar vocabulary
and phrases. They will use this toolkit to learn about festivals from the Spanish-speaking
world and compare them to celebrations in the U.S. Students will go on to learn
vocabulary related to parties and will again have the opportunity to compare birthday
celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world with common traditions in the U.S.
Unit 3: Let’s Take a Selfie!
Essential Questions: Who am I? What are other people like?
Students will learn how to describe themselves. They will be able to talk about
their personality, preferred activities, and favorite things. Additionally, students will have
the opportunity to compare their interests to popular pastimes in Spanish-speaking
countries.
Unit 4: Let’s Eat!
Essential Questions: What do I eat? What do other people eat?
Students will explore food culture. After learning common food vocabulary,
students will learn about staple ingredients in Mexican cuisine and popular Mexican
dishes.
