Grade 4 Overview

Unit 1: Welcome Back to Chelsea!

Essential Question: What is my school like?

Welcome back to school! In the first unit of the year, students will review some key topics

from year 1 of Spanish at Chelsea. Learners will review vocabulary and phrases related to

introductions, people in a school, places in a school, and more. Students will also be tackling

some new topics, like expressing the time and sharing a school schedule. Unit 1 will encourage

students to build upon their background knowledge in order to provide more detailed information

about the Chelsea experience.

Unit 2: What’s the Weather Like?

Essential Questions: What’s the weather going to be like? What should I

wear?

Let’s go on a trip! Students will begin unit 2 by learning basic weather expressions.

Learners will then take a look at a world map and become familiar with regions where Spanish

is spoken. We will discuss weather in these regions, which can be surprisingly different from one

place to the next. Students will then go on to talk about they should wear based on the weather.

Unit 3: All about Me!

Essential Question: What am I like?

In unit 3, students will review and build upon their abilities to describe themselves.

Learners will be able to provide basic information about themselves (name, birthday, age, etc.).

In addition, they will be able to share their favorite things, preferred activities, and personality

traits. Students will also work on expressing physical descriptions in this unit.

Unit 4: Let’s Eat (in Spain)!

Essential Questions: What do I eat? What do people in Spain eat?

Students will review and build upon their repertoire of food vocabulary in unit 4. Learners

will learn more vocabulary for common breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. Students will express

their food preferences and what they typically eat throughout the day. We will review the unique

features of meal times in Spanish-speaking countries and then focus on the food culture of Spain.

Students will learn about staple ingredients in Spanish cuisine and common Spanish dishes.
