Did You Know This?

Regular exercising of the vocal cords can even prolong life. It exercises the lungs and heart. The body produces “feel good hormones” called endorphins which circulate throughout the body when you sing. This is the same benefit you get when eating chocolate!

So if you are interested in “feeling good” and “living longer”, join the Grace Choir which resumes regular rehearsals on September 3 at 7:15 p.m. And you won’t gain any calories! Joan [email protected] 336.248.5648

Singing is good for your heart! study from the University of London says that the health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological.

The physical benefits: Singing is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body even when sitting.

The psychological: Singing reduces stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to a sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together because of the increased sense of community, belonging, and shared endeavor.

This summer past G.R.A.C.E. Girls met once a week at Pickett School to garden. Pickett has raised beds that were not being used---G.R.A.C.E. girls were looking for a summer project! After weeds were cleared and vegetables planted, the harvesting began. Each week the girls watered, weeded, and harvested lots of vegetables. We enjoyed a snack together and created a garden craft each session---stepping stones, vegetable labels, and garden chimes. At the end of the day, each girl took home a sack of produce…zucchini, squash, green beans, okra and cucumbers. Our last session we harvested melons and planted cold weather crops (lettuce, kale, and late tomatoes) for the teachers at Pickett to use with their classes.

Definitely a summer “growing” together! Some reflections from the girls: “The Grace Garden was a great idea. Thank you for all your support. The garden teaches about respect for plant life and patience. We gained a lot of produce from the garden and loved the experience. I am now going to become a gardener. The garden will be very beneficial to the community and I look forward to tending to it again.” -Rosa “I loved gardening so much!” –Hannah “The grace garden was really fun and I liked bringing home food to eat.” -Brooke

G.R.A.C.E. Giving Back

“I enjoyed seeing the garden grow.” -Precious “This summer I have worked at the garden and it has been a great experience. I have picked some of my favorite veggies and ben able to cook and eat them in different ways.” –Kayla “Gardening is a lot harder than you think it is. Usually you will get a good outcome on plants; we got plenty of zucchini, squash, green beans, okra, and cantaloupe and watermelon. It was fun and hard work, but it was what we wanted and we got more than we wished for. Let’s just say it was an experience that would be useful later in life.” -Jada

Performance features community choir, orchestra, dance, music, and poetry

If you’re feeling stressed and you can’t seem to get away from your devices long enough to hear yourself think, you can retreat for 90 minutes at the upcoming performance of Listen!

The event, scheduled for Sunday evening, September 14, at 7:00 p.m. is a spiritual exploration of stillness, nature, and the act of listening in the world. It includes original music and poetry, local singers, readers, dance, and a string and wind ensemble. The performance is free and open to the public.

Written by local composer Bonnie Duckworth and writer Barbara Presnell, the performance features “One More Day,” “Dream a New World,” and “A World’s Lyric,” and the words of Langston Hughes, and St. Teresa of Avila. It offers thoughtful reflection on our busy lives and reminds us of the importance of paying attention.

Bonnie Wagner Duckworth has been twice honored with the prestigious Rondthaler Award for Creativity in Music Composition from Salem College. In 2000 she received the Presiding Bishop’s Certificate in Church Music from the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal Church of the United States.

Barbara Presnell is the author of the poetry collection Piece Work, published in 2007 by Cleveland State University, which was staged and performed through-out the Piedmont. She has twice received an NC Arts Council Fellowship in writing, and her work is published widely in journals and anthologies. She writes a bi-weekly column for The Dispatch.

Faith & Arts Program on September 14

The event will also feature the artwork of the late Jason Camp, whose intricate designs served as cover art for other Faith and the Arts performances.
