be held on Wednesday 7 May. Im-mediately when hearing this, de-pending on your age, your mindwanders back to the first free elec-tions in South Africa in 1994.All the fear and uncertainties of

that time was the topic of the day.Twenty years down the line, theremight be more potholes, major ser-vice delivery problems and morecrime, but the uncertainty is stillprevalent.My comfort, and I am sure for

millions of other South Africans too,is the fact that there is one thingthat never changes. The one con-

stant factor is God. Our future isnot in the politicians’ hands, but inHis.Our country is unique in it’s

makeup, and although the rainbowin the rainbow nation sometimes isnot so bright, we still are fortunateto stay in this beautiful country. Wecomplain and whine when thingsare not going our way, but have youever thought that it only takes oneperson to change the world?If each one of us let go of the un-

godly trinity in our lives – me, my-self and I – and replace it with you,us and God, we will have a countryof heaven on earth.Let us with this election have pa-

Local businesses deserve supportWe all need to eat, and with the price of petrol, and al-though Sabie is a small town, it is becoming more and morefeasible to do our grocery shopping at our local GreenviewSpar, even though we are spoilt for choice.Greenview Spar is very much part of the community, and

we are fortunate to have Gerhard, Rina and their team inour town.I also noticed that a new butchery called Meat King

opened up at the bottom of Main Street next to Supa Quick.When satisfying my natural inquisitive nature, I waspleasantly surprised. Their staff were friendly, and the in-terior and exterior of the shop beautifully decorated in BigFive motives.I would like to wish these youngsters all the best with

their new venture, and would like to appeal to our resid-ents to support them. Their prices are very reasonable andthe biltong excellent.In the difficult economic circumstances in South Africa

and worldwide, they are very brave, but I am sure withhard work, quality products and a positive and friendly de-meanour, they will make a success.

Idea for guitar finger picking workshopI invite all young guitarists of Sabie to a guitar finger pick-ing workshop that I would like to hold in Sabie.The way I see it happening is like this: we all meet on a

Saturday afternoon at a venue in town and I show you thevarious finger picking techniques I know. Then you all gohome and practice for a couple of weeks, and apply it toyour own music.We will then hold another workshop to see how you are

doing, and from then on you are on your own. It won’t costyou anything, other than having to buy some thumb-picks,possibly a capodastrae, and of course start growing the nailof your first finger of your strumming hand.I think you will find the experience quite inspiring, and if

kan ongelukkig die agteruitgang waarneem.Die strate is in ’n toestand (slaggate en geen rommelver-

wydering) nie. Ook word gras nie gesny nie en die sypaad-jies lyk chaoties.Maar nou ja, dis seker maar weens geen dienslewering

nie, soos by so baie munisipaliteite.Die GPS Nuus wat ek gratis gekry het, het darem inte-

swem 1 600 m, of 64 keer die lengtevan Sabie Country Club se swembadvan 25 m. Annemarie Dressler het ’nnuwe rekord van 23 minute 4sekondes opgestel. **Sy is ’n geregist-reerde, praktiserende biokinetikus enmeesterswemafrigter.Kobie Gruber, mylorganiseerder en

afrigter by Sabie Swemklub, sê: “Ekdink dit is merkwaardig dat vier vandie tien mense wat die beste gevaarhet, ouer as 50 jaar is. AnnemarieDressler, die 50-jarige vrou wat diebeste tyd behaal het, het ook ’nalghele rekord opgestel.”Swem is ’n sportsoort wat almal –

When my wife, Tina, and I get tomanage various lodges as “locums”,we have some interesting challengesto contend with from time to time.There are occasionally the more

mundane problems... broken pipes,power failures, or TVs, lights and gey-sers getting blown out by powersurges. We’ve even had a rain stormwashing half of a lodge’s garden intothe swimming pool.However, I recently had a rather

unusual experience with a very irateguest at a lodge out on a farm.One morning, I was looking for keys

in the office. After pulling open the topdrawer of the desk I froze. There inthe drawer lay a curled up, vividgreen snake.Later, we were able to confirm that

it was a boomslang.

The gardener, who was assistingwith the search, shrieked out in panic,saying that the owner must have leftit there as a deterrent to thieves. Withits bright green colour, one could havethought it to be a plastic toy snake.But I immediately realised that it wasindeed an unannounced guest tryingto sneak into a bit of free accommoda-tion.The gardener was ready to fetch a

big stick to beat the intruder to death,but I managed to gently remove thedrawer, covered it with a cardboardbox, and carried it out into the veld. Ittook quite a bit of firm coaxing with along stick to try to dislodge a now veryagitated snake out of its cosy sleepingquarters.Then, suddenly, it sailed off and

disappeared into the grass. The wilycreature actually got away withoutpaying for its overnight stay!

In February, GraskopPrimary School’s athletescompeted in three events insix days.At the circuit athletics

meeting in Sabie on Friday7 February, they won 11gold and 7 silver medals.Twenty of the school’s ath-letes qualified to competein the district athleticschampionships to be heldlater this month.The next day, they com-

peted at Skukuza in afriendly competitionbetween five Lowveldschools.On 12 February, the

sprinters and relay athletescompeted against schoolsfrom as far as Barbertonand Malelane in the secondLowveld Speed and RelayAthletics Challenge atHoërskool Rob Ferreira inWhite River. Afterwards, theyoung “Grassies” were allsmiles as everyone brought an awardhome: first, second and third placeathletes received gold, silver andbronze medals, and fourth, fifth andsixth placed athletes received gold,silver and bronze certificates.

Louisa Matthee, athletics manager,said they are pleased with their ath-letes’ performances. The school isproud of Vuyo Kock, who is in gr. 7,but competes for Hoërskool Rob Fer-reira in the u/14 age group.

Glory Hill Primary in Graskopwelcomed two new teachers thisyear. This was after its farewell ofAlta Rossouw end of last year. Altanow teaches at Sabie Primary.Maretha Visser teaches Afri-

kaans for the gr. 4 classes, whileNesbert Wafawanaka is shapingthe young minds in gr. 5.Principal Daan Rossouw said the

school is grateful to have the twonew teachers on board as GloryHill Primary now has grown tohave 925 pupils.
