From the edi tort all started with a SMS: Thefuneral of Hester Killian willbe held on Friday 31 January.

mediately I thought: But it can-be! I saw her briefly inspruit towards the end of lastr, with the usual animated chat-and greetings that we must vis-but it never happened.Feelings of guilt of not making acerted effort to visit her will notnge the outcome, but I wish itld. What hurts and bothers memost is the fact that I missedon an opportunity to show lovecompassion. To not be present

someone in need, whether sick-s, emotional of financial, robs of the opportunity to demon-te what or who lives inside you.did not even know she had can-and having walked that road, I

wanted to be there for her, but I didnot know. Our everyday saying iswe dont have time... but time waitsfor no one. We never know when ourlast day on earth will be, and feel-ings of guilt afterwards do notchange anything.

Every parent or older person willtell stories of their hardships as achild and how different the worldwas, but one thing that was betterin the old days, was time. Despitemodern technology, faster cars, electronic devices to make our lifeeasier, we are more in a hurry thanever before.

I have made a decision to keep myword when saying to someone wemust visit, to make sure it happens. If we all have the mindset of less of me, but more of you, wont ourworld be a better place to live in?

There are so many lonely people outthere, and a cup of coffee and a half-hour visit might just be what theyneed.

Be there for others, because if youare in a bad place, would you notwant someone to be there for you?

There was a cut-off liston January 23, many pages long. About three hourse were reconnected, luckily before all the food coulddeteriorate.

Black leopard spott ed againIn GPS News of 31 January you published an article aboutblack leopards in the Sabie area. My wife and I saw a blackleopard on the road from White River to Sabie in lateDecember last year. It was crossing the road at the firstpine tree block on the left. It actually stopped on the side of the road and looked at us.

MyleenMashigo teaches the gr. 1s the ba-sics of Sepedi for one period eachday. She makes use of hand pup-pets and face masks, and the chil-dren are learning while having lotsof fun.

The IIAL policy will be imple-mented incrementally, commen-cing in gr. 1 next year, and willcontinue until 2026, when it will beimplemented in gr. 12.

According to a document re-leased by the department, the IIALpolicy aims to promote andstrengthen the use of African lan-guages by all learners in the schoolsystem. It aims to strengthen the

development and increase the util-ity of African languages by intro-ducing pupils incrementally tolearning an African language fromgr. 1 to 12 to ensure that all non-

African languages at the level of home language, and so increasethe use of those languages for academic purposes.

In so doing, it will improve prficiency in and utility of the previ-ously marginalized Africanlanguages (at first additional lan-guage level) and raise the confid-ence of parents to choose their owlanguages as languages for learn-ing and teaching, reads the report

The policy also aims to increaseaccess to languages by all pupilsbeyond English and Afrikaans andpromote social cohesion by ex-panding opportunities for the de-velopment of African languages asa significant way of preservingheritage and cultures.
