The team was very fortunate to have had access to similar work previously completed by North St Ives Public School of which Ms Tavsovski was a staff member. The Year 6 Special Jackets have finally arrived aſter our original supplier informed us that they were unable to complete our order. Thank you to the Year 6 parents for your paence in waing for the jackets to arrive which did present problems especially since the weather has turned colder. The Uniform Shop has now received its order of winter jumpers so there is no excuse for anyone not to be wearing the winter school uniform. Congratulaons to the whole school community for the manner in which you have embraced the school policy of wearing a school uniform as determined by the parents of Gordon West under the school Fair Discipline Policy. Might I add that the children of Gordon West look magnificent in their school uniform. At regular intervals the Year 6 students and I distribute lost property to its righul owners. If a childs full name is clearly wrien on the item it is very easily reunited with its owner. However you would be amazed how many items of clothing arent labelled. We implore you to make our job much easier and to save yourself considerable amounts of money by implemenng the very simple step of wring your childs name on their uniform.

Congratulations to Mrs Sheldon on her comprehensive overview of the Gordon West K/6 Writing program presented prior to the regular monthly meeting of the Gordon West Parents and Citizens meeting last Monday evening. In summary as a result of analysis of recent Naplan data the school identified a need to focus attention on certain aspects of our writing program across the school as part of our three year strategic direction plan under the leadership team of Mr Sparke, Mrs Sheldon and Ms Tasovski. The plan involves intensive teacher professional learning, pre testing of all students Kindergarten to Year 6, the explicit teaching of writing based on a predetermined writing scope and sequence, the development of accompanying rubrics to accurately assess student performance and to build the capacity of teachers to accurately identify student performance levels. The team was very fortunate to have had access to similar work previously completed by North St Ives Public School of which Ms Tavsovski was a staff member. The Year 6 Special Jackets have finally arrived after our original supplier informed us that they were unable to complete our order. The Year 6 children had the opportunity to display these very impressive jackets to the whole school at Wednesday’s school assembly. Thank you to the Year 6 parents for your patience in waiting for the jackets to arrive which did present problems especially since

the weather has turned colder. The Uniform Shop has now received its order of winter jumpers so there is no excuse for anyone not to be wearing the winter school uniform.

Congratulations to the whole school community for the manner in which you have embraced the school policy of wearing a school uniform as determined by the parents of Gordon West under the school Fair Discipline Policy. Might I add that the children of Gordon West look magnificent in their school uniform. At regular intervals the Year 6 students and I distribute lost property to its rightful owners. If a child’s full name is clearly written on the item it is very easily reunited with its owner. However you would be amazed how many items of clothing aren’t labelled. We implore you to make our job much easier and to save yourself considerable amounts of money by implementing the very simple step of writing your child’s name on their uniform.

We are all looking forward to the SRC Sausage Sizzle to be held on Friday as part of the Red Dust appeal. Red Dust aims to promote a better future for remote Aboriginal and Indigenous communities. It provides initiatives that aim to focus on nutrition, hygiene and physical activity to reduce chronic disease. Our gourmet chef Salvatore Castelnuovo assisted by Mr Sparke look forward to the challenges of cooking for over 550 students on the day. Thank you to the SRC and their teacher organisers Ms Fitness and Ms Taylor for organising this very worthwhile fund raiser. On Tuesday of last week the wonderful NSW Police Band visited the school to workshop with our Concert Band 1 students and to perform for students from Years 2-6. Our Concert Band children were enthralled to work with such talented individuals and will treasure the experience for a long time. The concert was magnificent with the band demonstrating individual instruments together with a whole band performance accompanied by a magnificent vocalist who had the complete audience accompanying her with many of the popular songs performed. A big thank you to our Band Director Ms Harvey and to our Band Co ordinator Mrs Thomas for organising the event.

Thank you to all of those parents, a number of whom are themselves teachers at other schools, for all of your suggestions as to what events/ activities should be held at Gordon West Public School. However every school is different and has different strategic directions and priorities and sometimes we are unable to implement the suggestions no matter how admirable they may be. Our core business is to implement the six key learning areas determined by the Department of Education and Training with particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy and to ensure that the children of Gordon West are competing at the highest levels. Also at Gordon West we have decided to implement an incredibly successful ICT program K-6 so that our children are well prepared for a future digital world. Our curriculum is very crowded and we have a great deal to implement in a short period of time. Hence over recent years we have had to remove Year 5/6 tennis lessons and Ceroc and Modern Jive Dance Lessons K-6 from the school timetable. As much as the children love participating in a variety of exciting performances etc the time spent on the preparation for individual performances such as Showcase and even the preparation of our School Gazette impacts on our ability to implement our core business at the level which we would expect. The challenge of course is to find the balance which we believe that we do well. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

CANTEEN NEWS WINTER WARMERS We are serving homemade vegetable soup for lunch and recess orders. The soup is made on site using fresh pumpkin, carrot, potatoes, celery and onion – a great healthy option and it can be ordered with or without a roll. We also offer warm Milo made with milk at recess , the cost for this is $2.00. Mini Pizzas and Milo Ice creams are available on Fridays only and we will stay open until all the children return from PSSA sports so they can also purchase items over the counter.
