A message from Deb …

Thank you, thank you, thank you. For everyone’s contributions to the Biggest Morning Tea on Monday. It was a great success, we

raised $500. I have spoken to Janet, she was thrilled with our support and thanks everyone.

NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3, 5, 7 will take place between the 9th – 12th of May. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas of: › reading › writing › language conventions (spelling, grammar

and punctuation) › numeracy. To remove any stress or anxiety we view this as one of many components which make up our teaching and learning cycle. At Goodwood, our philosophy is that NAPLAN is just another day at school. It is a discreet snapshot of a student on a given day.

IELC Information Night It was wonderful to meet many of the parents of our Intensive English Language students last Thursday night. Many thanks to the parents and staff who came along on the night to talk and share their experiences of Goodwood School.

SPORTS DAY INFORMATION Wednesday April 13

th

Students meet at school in the morning as normal. Classes will gather on the basketball court at 9.05am for the whole school warm up. The Primary Years students will then walk to Goodwood Oval to start their events. The Early Years classes will walk over later. This is our first trial year of having Sports Day at Goodwood Oval during normal school hours.

Clothing Students are to wear…

› appropriate school uniform for physical activity (shorts, t-shirt)

› appropriate footwear (no sandals)

› hair tied up

› sun smart hat (wide brim, bucket or legionnaires – no caps)

Students may wear something of their team colour. For example, hair ribbon, socks, t-shirt, shorts, coloured accessories. If wearing something of their team colour it must be appropriate clothing for physical activity – no dress ups or costumes. If students do not have anything of their team colour, teachers will have a supply of coloured steamers and freeze tape that students can attach to their clothing or hat.

Bring - recess and lunch (R-2 students must bring recess as they will be at school – the canteen will not be open) - food stalls are available - drink bottle - sun smart hat (no caps or visors) - sunscreen - PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR ITEMS ARE CLEARLY NAMED

Championship Sprints and Relays Selection After the lunch break certain students will compete in the Championship Sprints and Relays. Students are timed during PE lessons prior to the day. The 2 fastest boys and 2 fastest girls in each year level from each team colour will compete in the Championship Sprint. The 3

rd fastest will compete in the Championship Relay. The 4

th fastest is selected as a reserve. If students are absent during

these lessons and would like to be considered they must let Alex or Somer know as races are finalised by the end of Week 10. All students will compete in a sprint during their class tabloid.

Changes This year our whole school warm up will be held at school on the basketball court. The year 3-7 students will (including Ria’s year 3’s) walk to Goodwood Oval at 9.15am to start their events at 9.30am. The early years classes will stay at school in their classroom where they will do activities with their classroom teacher. Early years students will have recess at school then walk to Goodwood Oval by 10.45am where the teams will sing their chants. This has been planned to ensure our younger children have the energy to fully participate in their events. This year we have included an optional 800m event for Years 3-7 students. Students will earn points in their team for completing the event. This will also be used to help select SAPSASA participants.

Supervision During the day’s events students are under the classroom teachers/support staffs supervision. It is important that parents/caregivers do not take students during the events to the food stalls etc. as this can cause problems for teachers in terms of organising events and teams. All students have allocated break time to eat so please do not give students food during the events. The teacher would need to be consulted if you were to take your child to the toilet, staff will generally take groups of children to the toilet.

Pick Up The closing ceremony will be held at approximately 2.20pm. Students will walk back with their classroom teachers to school. Students can be collected at normal time 3.15pm. If parents/caregivers would like to collect students at the oval at 2.20pm they MUST report to the teacher and be signed off.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE STUDENTS WITHOUT SIGNING YOUR CHILD OUT WITH THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.

Help us on Sports Day with some tasty treats to feed the masses!

Goods can be dropped to the canteen the day before (Tuesday 12th April by 3.15pm) or straight to Goodwood oval on the day.

Please keep food colouring to a minimum - colour the packaging instead!

Sports Day Needs You!

Great Achievements at Goodwood!

Water is precious… let’s make sure our actions help! Bron and Janet’s SA Water Incursion

In March a lady from SA Water visited our classes to talk to the students about how wastewater is treated once it leaves the home. The talk was very informative and gave the students an understanding of the processes that take place. The students learnt that all sorts of things end up at the processing plant. In particular they were shocked by an experiment that demonstrated how quickly toilet paper breaks down in water, as opposed to a wipe that had been in a container of water for over 3 years. It looked exactly the same as when it went in! Even though wipes say they are flushable they don’t break down and this causes an enormous amount of damage to the sewerage pipes. Some of the students were so concerned about this that they wanted to take action so they performed a short play

at last weeks assembly to inform everyone.

Quotes

“I was absolutely amazed that wet wipes were non-breakable and that I will be sure to tell people that amazing fact.” - Hugo

“I think that we could make a change about what people are doing by talking to people.” - Aleeza

“Tissue paper breaks down into little pieces while going down the drain.” - Adi

“It was fascinating when she said that people flush so many engagement rings, wet wipes, toys and all sorts of weird stuff down the toilet!” - Sabrina

“I learnt what happens after you use water at your house. First it goes down into the sewer and through screens that catch any large objects. After it goes into a primary sedimentation tank where all the pieces sink to the bottom etc. At the end you get recycled water that can be used in the garden or toilets.” - Sonya

“Something I learnt was that the recycled water pipes are purple.” - Yannika

“I learnt that chlorine helps water get clean.” - Addison

“I learnt why we have to appreciate what SA Water helps us with or if they didn’t we would not have clean water for South Australia.” - Kaitlin

Making connections with families is a priority across all aspects of Goodwood School and Preschool… The IELP information evening last Thursday night was good one example of this.

Being inclusive of all is an important aspect of people developing a sense of belonging. Thanks to those parents and staff who supported us with this event.

Great Achievements at Goodwood!

Magic at the Art Gallery of SA Two weeks ago, we visited the Art Gallery of SA in the city. You might think ‘Booooooooring!’ – but, it was the opposite to that!

We visited the Magic Object exhibition which showcased contemporary artworks from Australian artists based around the idea of ‘magic’. For the first hour, we took a guided tour of the exhibition. Some of our favourite pieces were sculptures made from blown glass with other characters and animals built into them. The artwork was set up like its own little community. We really enjoyed checking out the ‘portraits’ made from dead rats, mice, feathers and twigs brought to the artists’ door by their cats. A light was then shone on the sculpture and the silhouette of the artists was then able to be seen. Another highlight was seeing ‘The Banksia Men’ which were large costumes built up on frames. They were set up in a dark room and looked really freaky as they had lots of eyes that seemed to follow us around the room. In the second hour, we participated in a workshop in the studio. We created some amazing sculptures out of foam, feathers, pipe-cleaners, straws and wire. We also used ‘spirographs’ to make some groovy geometric designs.

Surprisingly, we had a lot of fun at the Art Gallery! We are now inspired to create our own amazing sculptural masterpieces! Tashfia, Helen, Zoe, Abbey, Emma – Year 7
