A Shepherds View
Here it is already July Fourth Weekend and we are reading in the Gospel that the Harvest is here! Indeed, it is! Not just the agricultural harvest but the urgent call of disci-pleship. Jesus NEEDS YOU! Each of us are called to go throughout our everyday world to preach the Good News of God's love, God's Mercy, God's joyful Spirit. We surely are like lambs amidst wolves sometimes. We face rejec-tion, scorn, opposition, dangers, and challeng-es. Jesus instructs them to as to their behavior on such a mission and insists that no matter what they or we encounter, they and we must trust God who will protect and care for them and us! Wasn't that the Spirit of 1776? Isn't that what we are REALLY celebrating this weekend amidst the picnics and fun? Isn't this what motivates our military service brothers and sisters, sons and daughters? It's truly amaz-ing to read about their Revolutionary commit-ment, to watch movies about how they did it, to see plays that celebrate the legacy they fought for. May Jesus' call to you do the same! Pray with our Good Shepherd Parish that we may also embrace that spirit of mission and ministry. Happy Independence Day Weekend!

It was this religious sense which inspired the authors of the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.”. In our prayers, let us ask that these cornerstone words which helped shape the freedoms that we enjoy also help to realize equality and inalienable rights throughout the world; and as we pray for peace among nations we ask the Lord to hold those on the front lines of this mission in His hands.
