GOOD NEWS WEEK

A festival atmosphere captured the attention of students and
staff at Woolgoolga High School on Tuesday 20th March, as we
all celebrated the culturally diverse nature of our school and
community. This celebration recognised Harmony Day, a
national initiative that encourages respect and tolerance of
different cultures throughout Australia. It acknowledges the
contribution that these cultures have made to our everyday
lives through food, music, the arts, political involvement, and
this year’s theme of Sport – Play, Engage, Inspire.
Woolgoolga High School is a community that is culturally and
linguistically diverse. We can boast that we include over
twenty nationalities and twenty five different language
backgrounds in our student body. This is truly something to
be proud of!
During Harmony Day, an international food court was
established at lunch time where Year 11 and 12 Hospitality
staff and students presented an impressive array of cuisine,
including East African with traditional Ethiopian coffee,
Indian curry and samosas, French chocolate croissants, Italian
tiramisu, pasta and pizza (thanks to Eagle Boys, Woolgoolga),
a dinki di Aussie BBQ with crocodile and kangaroo pies
(kindly donated by Fredo’s Pies at Nambucca Heads), Asian
delicacies, Aboriginal desserts and bush tucker (thanks to Sue
Thompkins).
The afternoon was a fun way to promote the concept of
inclusion and team spirit when staff and student teams
gathered to play soccer enthusiastically in the playground, an
India versus Australia cricket match on the basketball courts
and a hard fought volleyball match in the hall. While both
students and staff teams proved to be highly competitive,
each maintains that they narrowly edged out their opponents!
The idea that sport is a way of building bridges of
understanding and respect and is an activity that all of us can
participate in was reinforced through the great atmosphere
on the day. Well done to all those involved.

On the first
day of Term 2
for students, a
special Anzac
Ceremony will
be held in the
Hall for Years
9-12.
Students are
required to
wear full
school uniform
to attend
celebrating the different cultures that
make Australia a great place to live.
We celebrated this day with a wide
range of food stalls and teacher
versus student sporting events.
Thanks to Carolyn Byrne and her
team who created such a successful
day.
The interactive data projectors were
installed in our classrooms this week.
They will be ready for next term and
our teachers and students are very
excited.
The Woolgoolga High School P&C
are embarking on an innovative
fundraising event.—Cash Bingo. With
the help of the Woolgoolga Diggers
RSL, Cash Bingo will run each
Monday night (from the 30th April) at
the RSL from 7.30 till 9pm. Come
along, win prizes, have a great time,
meet exciting people and support
your school. The prizes on offer are
amazing—Over $600 in cash prizes
each week and a major jackpot of
$500. Hope to see you there!!!!!!
Term 2 starts for all students on 24th
April and we will be having an ANZAC
ceremony from 10.30 till 11am. Peter
Gibson, the President of the
Woolgoolga Diggers RSL, will be our
special guest.
A reminder for students in Years 7
and 9: the NAPLAN testing will occur
on the 15th to 17th of May, and Year
11 mid course examinations begin
on the 14th of May. Holiday revision
will help your results.
I would like to take this opportunity to
wish the students, staff and all in the
community a great school holiday—
take care and be safe.

continues to achieve excellence
on the sporting field. This
fortnight saw the Senior Boys‘
Soccer team progress to the
second round of the state
knockout, defeating Toormina 3-2
in a close contest. I was told that
our goalkeeper was the key to
our success. Congratulations to
James Alder and Lachlan Arthur
in making the zone side; Lachlan
also made the regional team.
Good luck with Grafton in the
next round.
Similarly the Open Girls‘ Soccer
team had success, moving onto
the third round of the state
knockout - they are to play
Bellingen High. Congratulations
to Anika Morgan and Jessie
Gentle for making the zone team
and also to Jessica for making
the regional team. In Rugby
League, congratulations to
Mitchell Grant for making the
regional team - a great effort.
The Under 15 Boys‘ Soccer team
defeated Bishop Druitt College 6-
1 in the first round of the Bill
Turner Cup knockout. Well
Done!
Harmony day was a complete
success, with all students and
staff commenting positively on
the day. The continuing message
for Harmony Day in 2012 is that
Everyone Belongs, which means
all Australians are a welcome part
of our country, regardless of their
background. It's a time to reflect
on where Australia has come
from, recognising the traditional
owners of this land. It's also
about community participation,
inclusiveness and respect –

Exploring
Early Childhood On 9 March Year 12 Exploring Early
Childhood students hosted a party
for 0-5 year olds. The theme was
―Under the Sea‖. This was an excel-
lent opportunity for our senior stu-
dents to observe first hand the devel-
opmental characteristics of young
children. Year 12 prepared the nutri-
tionally sound food (with a few treats)
and organised decorations, appropri-
ate activities and gift bags. Thank
you to the students for their efforts
and a big ‗thanks‘ goes to the par-
ents and carers who were able to
join us on the day.

Love Bites Programme at WHS Information days on respectful relationships have been held on Thursdays for the last three weeks for Year 10 students . The program is called Love Bites and has been developed by the North Coast Women's Health Care Centre and the Department of
Education and Communities. The program is designed to give students an understanding and awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault and to provide students with strategies to make sensible and informed decisions in their own relationships - now and in the future. It also gives the students an opportunity to discuss how to support their friends in their relationships. School organiser and Head Teacher Welfare, Mr Ian Cook, was very proud of the positive attitude and behaviour the students took to the program throughout each of the days. They displayed excellent listening skills and contributed in a mature and responsible nature when discussing potentially controversial and personal topics. Well done Year 10!

On 22nd March our English class (9E1) attended a poetry workshop in
the library, listening to Mark Tredinnick talk about his poetry. He spent
the afternoon explaining what he does for a living and reading out some
of his compositions. Mark explained to us the architecture of poetry, how
we should develop our own style and many more things about poetry. He
guided us through writing a draft poem toward the end of the session.
Written by Cadan Glattback (student)
For more information on this talented composer of poetry see
his website http://www.marktredinnick.com.au
Mark Tredinnick, winner of the Montreal Poetry Prize, is the
author of The Blue Plateau, Fire Diary, and nine other
acclaimed works of poetry and prose. He lives in the
highlands southwest of Sydney, Australia.
Mark Tredinnick is ―one of our great poets of place—not just
of geographic place, but of the spiritual and moral landscapes
as well,‖ according to Judith Beveridge. Of ―Walking
Underwater‖, which won the Montreal Prize in 2011, Andrew
Motion wrote: ―This is a bold, big-thinking poem, in which
ancient themes (especially the theme of our human
relationship with landscape) are re-cast and re-kindled. It well
deserves its eminence as a prize winner.‖

When I walk out (By Bonnie Birchall)
When I walk out I will be home,
In my own little sanctuary,
Taking a break from the world.
The breeze is brushing past the curtain,
The sunshine is streaming in,
The world is whizzing past me,
But I do not care.
My home is peaceful.
My home is quiet
And that’s just the way I like it.
When I Walk Out (By Susan Pietrzykowski)
When I walk out from an alleyway, I see
The grey sky that blows soft gales
In my face
I feel the world running by without
Pace and moderation leaving my
Head spinning and upset,
Like it always does.
Finding it again I’ll never forget
Or remember
Or want to
I try to align direction but
No mind comes. A patriotic child
Teeters behind a parent, aeternum fidelis
She’ll shadow her before
she leaves
Before she runs
The city;
Spits venom on my shoes, more
Illusionary cheatings of mistrust;
Like it always does.
And I walk out…away…forever.
When I walked out (By Jazmine Wilson)
When I walked out, everything was fine
Night crept in
And out goes the light
The moon floats above
The suns gone to sleep
It can’t help me no more
And the glooms no help for my need
Since I walked out
The suns all I’ve known
As it gradually goes down
The moon brings the cold
Darkness slowly surrounds me
While shadows seem to plunge out
Sounds start to echo
And beasts become loud
Their presence paralysing
Alerting the looming ones
As they scatter and squirm off
Waiting till the softer presence of day

During Harmony Week, a poster competition was held to promote the theme this year of
sport - Play, Engage, Inspire. Year 7 and 8 students participated in the poster competition in
their Visual Arts classes. The standard was high, with the winner, Shelley Lane, receiving
an iTunes voucher for $30 and the runner-up, Meisa Elsair, receiving a $10 phone credit
voucher. Congratulations! For more posters and flags see the display in the school library.
This semester we have three Year 7 Ag classes, two Year 8 Farm Animal Groups, a Year
9 Ag class and Year 10 Ag class.
Year 7 have been busy monitoring a chicken from one day old to 8 weeks of age. They have
also established a vegie garden with button squash, zucchini and radish dominating the
landscape.
Year 8 'Animals' as we call them, have been studying a unit on horses with a trip to Valery
Trails held on 30/3/12.
Year 9 have been 'a buzz' with bees and, with lambing approaching, the talk is all parturition,
lactation and post natal growth.
Year 10 mature agriculturalists by this stage have been investigating alternative forms of
farming - radical Ag! Plants without soil? Organic production! etc etc. Yes!! We're serious!!
An added bonus for all groups has been freshly picked sweet corn early in the term and now
slices of chilled watermelons grown by the students themselves.

CanTeen is an organisation that helps young people living with
cancer. They provide members with a place where they can just be
'young people', helping them deal with the day-to-day pressures of
cancer. CanTeen also puts on camps and activities where large
groups of young people dealing with cancer can come together and
have fun! At these camps, no-one gets bullied or teased about
their situation because they are all in the same situation. If you
need help with cancer please don't hesitate to contact CanTeen with

A posse of cowgirls and cowboys
hit the forest trails at Valery in
beautiful sunshine on Friday 30th
March.
Groups of friends (all highly
trained horse whisperers)
assembled for the fray!
There was movement at the yards
for the word had gone around that
the old Clydesdale with
Chris Boyes aboard was plodding
away.
After finding their way in
and out of the beautiful,
eerily quiet forest, the party
cooled off in the pool,
followed by a BBQ lunch.
The padded seats of the
coach were a welcome
relief for the bowed legs
and masseured backsides

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy 2012
In May 2012 the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years
3, 5, 7 and 9 in all government and non-government schools. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education
Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools.
The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to
support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each
student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.
Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as
part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every
student's right to privacy is maintained.
The tests will be conducted across Australia for all students from 15-17 May 2012.
In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be
two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test,
the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.
Friday 18 May - A 'catch-up' day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be
considered for exemption from the tests if:
they are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than
English, or
they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to
participate in the tests.
All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Special provisions which reflect the student's normal level of
support in the classroom will be provided. Large print, Braille and black and white versions of the tests are available for
students with vision impairment.
Access to special provisions and exemption from the tests must be discussed with your school's learning support team
and the school Principal, and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN
by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the Principal. If you
wish to withdraw your child from the tests you must sign a parent/ carer consent form. Consent forms are available at
your school.
Please make an appointment with the Principal of the school your child attends if you would like further information
about your child's participation in NAPLAN.
Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at: http://www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent Carer_supportlindex.html
