THE GOOD NEWS 30, August 18 - Sunday I alluded to a saying that many of us are familiar with: “forgive and forget.” Because many of us have heard people say this for years, we assume that forgiving somehow requires forgetting. I don’t really think this is true. While it is obvious that many people are able to put an insult or an unpleasant situation behind them, to truly “forget” the situation implies that we have not remembered how we have learned or grown (as forgiving or forgiven people). Last Sunday I alluded to a saying that many of us are familiar with: “forgive and forget.” Because many of us have heard people say this for years, we assume that forgiving somehow requires forgetting. I don’t really think this is true. While it is obvious that many people are able to put an insult or an unpleasant situation behind them, to truly “forget” the situation implies that we have not remembered how we have learned or grown (as forgiving or forgiven people).

Dale Carnegie, the famous “self-help” success author, once told a story about a man named Bob Hoover. Hoover was a famous test pilot. He was flying home from an air show in San Diego, and had not been on his way 3 minutes when both engines suddenly stopped. Well, Hoover and his two passengers were several hundred feet in the air, but through skillful maneuvering and a little luck, he managed to swing around and land the plane very roughly. All three of them survived..... but the plane was severely damaged.

Carnegie writes: “Hoover’s first act after the emergency landing was to inspect the airplane’s fuel. Just as he suspected, the WWII propeller plane he had been flying had been filled with jet fuel rather than gasoline.”

When Hoover returned to the airport, he went directly to the mechanic who had filled the airplane prior to take off. “This young man was sick with the agony of his mistake.

of his mistake. Tears were streaming down his face as Bob Hoover approached. He had just caused the loss of a very expensive plane and could have caused the loss of three lives as well.”

As Bob Hoover approached we might imagine the anger welling up inside of him. We might ima-gine all the things he would say to this careless young man — no doubt he was due for a real tongue lashing. But as Carnegie tells us, “Hoover didn’t scold the me-chanic... he didn’t even criticize him. Instead, he put his big arm around the younger man’s shoulder and said: ‘To show you that I’m sure you’ll never do this again, I want you to service my other plane tomorrow’.”

With a depth of character and self-control, Bob Hoover not only forgave the young mechanic, but he aspired to teach the man as well. We can be assured that neither the mechanic nor Bob Hoover ever forgot the incident. This story of course, doesn’t capture

capture the fullness of what it takes (on the inside) to forgive another person.

Rather than “forgive and forget”, it seems to me that we are better served by another saying that I mentioned last Sunday: “to err is human, to forgive divine.” Forgiveness is one of God’s qualities, and the true practice of it, involves laying down the burden of all the emotions and feelings (the spitefulness and vindictiveness) we carry within us. These are feelings that can tear us apart over time. Forgiveness may take years, and a lot of deep thought, patience, and struggle. We don’t forget, but we consciously give the burden over to the One who can heal. When we practice true forgiveness, we are brought just a little bit closer to the heart of God.

Blessings,

Joe

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

This is our last week to work on our Talent Show offerings. Please try and attend so we can polish up our acts. Currently we have a group of musicians and singers working on "Jesus Love Me" and dancers performing to "Blessings". Dancers are asked to wear a black or red leotard if they have one and boys can wear black pants and shirt. Megan would like to meet with her group at 5:00 pm Sunday evening to rehearse the dance. If you are not going to be at the Talent Show please let me know ASAP.

TEACHERS NEEDED

It is time to start planning for another year of Sunday School. We are in need of teachers at all age levels. Teachers are asked to teach approximately 2 Sundays a month on a rotating basis. The curriculum is provided and very easy to work with. If you have been thinking that this might be your area of ministry, please contact Dawn Mallory for more information. Teaching Sunday School can be a very rewarding experience for you and the child. Please give prayerful consideration to working with our youth. A sign-up sheet will be available this Sunday.

TALENT SHOW AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL

FUMC has talent and we want to see it! It is time for our Annual Talent Show and Ice Cream Social, being held on Sunday, August 21 at 5:30 PM, in the Social Hall. This opportunity is for everyone in the church to share either their performing or display talent to the congregation. It is not too late to sign up! Please let Dawn Mallory know if you have a display talent or performing talent that you would like to share. If your only talent is eating ice-cream, then we have got you covered. We will have plenty of ice-cream to cool down this hot night. So mark your calendar you will not want to miss this special event.

BABYSITTING CLASS

On Sunday, August 28, we will be having our babysitting class for those students 7th grade and above that are interested in working in our church Nursery. We will meet immediately after church for approximately 4 hours. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Dawn or Trish if you plan on attending.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER MEETING

Pastor Joe and I invite all of our Sunday School Teachers to a meeting to kick off our new Sunday School year. Please plan on joining us on Sunday, August 28, at 9:30 am in the Florence Porter Room. We hope to provide you with all the tools needed for another successful year.

BIBLES

It is the tradition of this church to present Bibles to our third grade students on Rally Sunday. Letters went out to eligible students. If you did not get a letter or are third grade or above and would like a Bible, please contact Dawn Mallory at [email protected]. These Bibles will be presented on Sunday, September 11, during our 10:30 am service. In HIS Service, Dawn

FUMC T-Shirts!With Rally Sunday less than a

month away, the Christian Education Committee thought it would be fun to have FUMC T-Shirts to wear on Rally Sunday. It has been many years since we have sold t-shirts and we thought it was time to show our FUMC spirit again. These t-shirts can be worn to church sponsored events or around town to let everyone know where you go to church. The cost will be $15 for a basic t-shirt. Ladies, we have a v-neck designed just for you for $18. Please come by the table in the glass enclosure this Sunday to see the design and t-shirt sizing. We will be taking orders for the next couple of weeks. Don't delay – we

NOTES FROM CINDY–YOUR PARISH VISITOR

In Pastor Joe’s sermon yesterday, he cited humorous passages from Anne Lamott. Anne Lamott is one of my favorite authors and I have read many, but not all, of her books. There are two books that Anne has written in which she talks about her faith. She may have been a Christian, but she discovered her faith as an adult. I must say that Anne is a liberal from Marin County with the most entertaining style of writing. Her faith books are: Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith (1990) and Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith (2005). I can remember being at Borders looking for the Plan B book and the clerk kept trying to divert me to the new Sarah Palin book that had just come out!

I loved the stories Pastor used about forgiveness. It certainly helps one see themselves through stories of others. There is just no way we are perfect human beings and the harder we try to be perfect the more we fail. That’s not to say we don’t keep trying or seeking perfection.

Barbara Norton’s nephew, Ted, just stopped by and gave us Barbara’s new address. Barbara has moved into Paramount Court this past Saturday and is getting used to her new setting. Her address is:

Barbara Nortonc/o Paramount Court Senior Living Room 3033791 Crowell RoadTurlock, CA 95382

I’m looking forward to Tuesday evening (8/16) when Rebecca Somers’ choir, “Exultaté” will be giving us a concert at 7 p.m. I love to hear music and when it is young people singing, it makes it all the better. I know Rebecca has done a great job with the group, along with the help of Clare Curry and Patti Morrisey. The young people themselves have earned a huge ovation.

I hope you’ve been giving Irene Brunskill your reservations for the Apple Hill trip. We are going to need payments to FUMC by Sept. 9th. The “skinny” is this:

Be at FUMC at 7:45 a.m.Storer bus leaves at 8 a.m.Arrive at the High Hill Ranch about 11 a.m.BBQ lunchGuided loop tour of the various apple orchardsA special treat at the High Hill Ranch and depart 3 p.m.Arrive at FUMC about 6 p.m.

The Apple Hill trip is scheduled for Thursday, October 13, 2011. The cost is $62 per person, again due on Sept. 9th. Hope to see you there. Laurie has made her spectacular games for us to enjoy on the bus. I’m sure we will have a GREAT time!

One reminder, please stay off ladders! Julia Major’s father, Marv Tanner, is in a major battle for his life. He fell off a ladder last week and is one of many that I know have fallen off ladders in this past year. Luckily the others weren’t hurt as seriously as Marv. Our prayers go out to Marv and his family in this time of deep distress.

Until Next Time. . .

Cindy
