What is pollination? Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the stamen to the pistil. Insects are major pollinators. When an insect visits a flower, their body rubs against the stamen. While the insect continues to move around the flower to get food, the pollen on the insect's body rubs off onto the pistil. Without pollination, a plant would not be able to reproduce. Pollination leads to the food we eat as well as a healthy ecosystem.

What is your typical reaction when you see a wasp? Scream, run, maybe even hide? Despite their scary appearance, wasps are actually very beneficial to us. Wasps are pollinators. Without pollinators, plants would not be able to reproduce. Wasps transport pollen grains as they visit flowers, feeding on nectar. A wasp is an insect that looks similar to a bee. However, wasps are not covered with fuzzy hairs like a bee. Because of this, they are not as efficient pollinators as bees. Pollen sticks to the hairs of a bee as it moves from flower to flower. Without the hair, pollen is less likely to stick to the wasps' bodies. Nevertheless, they still get the job done.

Wasps are also great predators. They prey on other insects, keeping insect populations under control. Yellow jackets are a type of wasp that can definitely send people running! They are also scavengers. They mostly feed on dead insects. This works out great for us because there are less dead bugs lying around. Even though wasps can give you quite a sting, they are very beneficial to the environment.
