MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, IIT DELHI

Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao

It is our honour to be able to host the prestigious DD-ROBOCON competition at IITDelhi campus on June 16, 2019 (Sunday). I understand that the competition is beingheld for the first time in Delhi since its inception in 2002. IIT Delhi team thanksDoordarshan for their confidence in us. As I understand, our organizing team, alongwith a committee of Judges and Referees drawn from various colleges/institutes of thecountry, selected 26 teams from 86 submissions as Solution Ideas in Stage 1. Theseteams will bring their robots to IIT Delhi to compete with others, and the winning teamwill represent the country in Ulan Bator, Mongolia for the ABU-ROBOCON Competitionon August 25, 2019.

Knowing that the teams have to make one of the two robots which should walk on fourlegs to cross difficult terrains and climb a slope (depicting a mountain), it appears to bea very challenging task. However, such experiences of designing, fabrication, andcontrol will make our engineering graduates really close to what India needs today, i.e.,Creativity, Innovation and Product building.

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all 650+ participants and other dignitariesto the beautiful IIT Delhi campus. IIT Delhi has recently been designated as an Institutionof Eminence by Govt. of India, one of the only three government institutions which hasbeen bestowed this status. IIT Delhi has a strong research culture in the robotics fieldand many of the faculty members and research scholars involved in the robotics areawill be involved in the organization of this event. I am sure there will be fruitfulinteractions between participants and the IIT Delhi team.

Finally, I sincerely thank our students, staff, and faculty for making DD-ROBOCON 2019a reality, and I wish them all the best for the event.

On behalf of ABU-ROBOCON Tokyo Secretariat, it is my pleasure to see DD-ROBOCON2019 will be held at IIT Delhi which is one of the famous engineering schools in theWorld.

I have been told that 86 teams submitted their Solution Idea proposals. From those,54 teams were shortlisted by a committee formed with the professors from variouscolleges/institutes of India. Finally, 26 teams were called to bring their robots at IITDelhi on June 16, 2019 based on the video submissions. I congratulate all 86 teamsfor their participation, and wish all the best to 26 teams for their games at IIT Delhi.

Even though I am not personally present in India, I have been closely following upwith the organizers, particularly, Doordarshan and Prof. S.K. Saha at IIT Delhi whom Iknow since 2006-07 when India was preparing to host 2008 ABU-ROBOCON inPune, and later in 2007 while IIT Delhi was participating in ABU-ROBOCON in Hanoi,Vietnam.

I am looking forward to welcoming the Indian representative team in Ulaalbaatar,Mongolia on August 25, 2019!

MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

It is little emotional to write this message as we have been hearing about ROBOCON 2019 tobe held at New Delhi since last year. Several official procedures had to be followedat Doordarshan and IIT Delhi before it has been finally decided in December 2018 to hostthe competition by IIT Delhi. One of us was involved with this competition since 2002 whenIIT Delhi was asked by the Director of IIT Kanpur to organize the competition in Delhi toselect a team from India to participate in Asian Broadcasting Union (ABU) ROBOCON to beheld in Tokyo, Japan. It was unfortunate that we missed the opportunity to be the firsthost of the competition. It was held at IIT Kanpur in 2002. Nirma Institute of Technology(NIT) in Ahmedabad being the first champion of the event in Kanpur was very kind to host theevent next two years in Ahmedabad. The following 14 years were conducted by MaharashtraInstitute of Technology (MIT) group in Pune. They are to be congratulated to host even twointernational ABU-ROBOCON in 2008 and 2014. ROBOCON in India has seen the growthfrom mere three teams in 2002 to more than 100 teams in last few years in Pune. It hasshown significant growth but we would like to have even more teams participating in Indiafor such technology-rich competition where the game plan is decided by a set of expertsdrawn from professors of reputed university/institute of the host country of ABU ROBOCON,national broadcaster, and few international experts from Japan and elsewhere. It takes abouta year to formulate the game theme, make drawings of the game field and game items, maketest field and game items by keeping in mind that those would be reproducible in theparticipating countries. On the day of ABU-ROBOCON of the previous year the game plan forthe next year is disclosed. For example, the game plan of 2020 ABU-ROBOCON will bedisclosed on August 25, 2019 at Ulan Bator, Mongolia (the host of this year's ABUROBOCON).

In order to strengthen DD-ROBOCON in India, we have changed the format this year bykeeping the similarity with the style of international event, i.e., to conduct the games in oneday. Since making these robots costs quite high we allowed more and more teams toparticipate in Stage 1 by providing only "Solution Ideas (Proposal)". To check theirpreparedness we asked them to submit videos of critical operations as a part of Stage2.Finally, we selected 26 teams based on the performances of 54 videos in Stage 2 which wereagain based on 86 Solution Ideas in Stage 1. We would like to congratulate all 86 teams fortheir participation in DD-ROBOCON 2019. Even if all 86 could not come to IIT Delhi, let thembe with us over live telecast planned by Doordarshan on June 16, 2019.

We also request them to keep their tempo up and proceed with the fabrication and operationof the robots for their research and laboratory experiment purposes in theircolleges/institutes. They may become a REAL product one day! The competition day of DD-ROBOCON 2019 at IIT Delhi was changed from traditional March in Pune to June mainly dueto 1) Availability of the hostels at IIT Delhi, and more importantly 2) providing less time tothe champion team to change their robots before they ship to Mongolia. Such changes in therobot after the national championship caused more harm to many winning teams earlier (atleast to IIT Delhi who was the national champion in 2007 to represent India in Hanoi,Vietnam) as they do not get any more opportunity to test the performance of the modifiedrobots by competing with other teams. We hope the winning team at least should be able torepeat the performance of their national winning game. We are really sorry for the change indate which caused inconveniences to many colleges/institutes in the country but we hope itwill pay off in future.

Now, it is the time to acknowledge the enormous support we receivedfrom Doordarshan including Ms. Supriya Sahu, IAS who is the DG-Doordarshan, Mr. Sunil, Mr.Sri Ram, Mr. Sandeep Sood, and others. At IIT Delhi, we first thank our Director, Prof. V.Ramgopal Rao, for immediately agreeing to host the event in New Delhi incollaboration with Doordarshan. Our thanks are also due to Prof. M. Balakrishnan, DeputyDirector (S&P), Prof. B.R. Mehta, Dean (R&D), Prof. Rajesh Khanna, Dean (SA), Prof. A.K.Nema, Associate Dean of SA (BHM), Prof. Joby Joseph, Associate Dean of Academics (UG),Prof. G.V. Prakash (Prof. in-charge of LHC), and many staff, students, and faculty across theinstitute whose list may be endless.

The kind agreement of The Robotics Society in India to be associated with DD-ROBOCON2019 is a new beginning, which we hope to continue in future as well. The help extendedby Prof. Yogesh Bhalerao from MIT and his team to understand some of the critical aspectsof hosting such event is sincerely acknowledged. Getting funds to support our research andacademic conferences is a routine activity but obtaining financial support for DD-ROBOCON2019 was indeed a challenging task. We are extremely thankful to all our sponsorsMathWorks, SERB, P&F, BIS, Rohm, Kuka, Springer for their generous financial grants orprizes. Finally, we thank the committee of Judges and Referees consisting of Prof. P.M.Pathak of IIT Roorkee, Prof. Anant M. Chakradeo of MIT Institute of Design, Prof. S.S. Ohol ofCOEP, Pune, and the most popular Chief Referee among the students Prof. T.P. Singh of PDPUniv., Ahmedabad for their time during several virtual and physical meetings to shortlistteams in Stages 1 and 2. The comments from two special invitees, Prof. Chetan Arora andProf. Shubhendu Bhasin from our CSE and EE Depts. of IIT Delhi, respectively, during Stage 1,are also acknowledged. At the end, let us have a great DD-ROBOCON 2019 at IIT Delhi, and excuse us for any difficult situation or inconvenience faced by anybody before and/orduring the DD-ROBOCON 2019 competition.

‘GREAT URTUU’: SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE

The concept behind ROBOCON 2019 is to retrace the routes of ‘The Urtuu’- an ancient messengersystem innovated by Nomadic Mongols. This system was one of the most fundamental tools ofmanaging the Mongolian Empire, relaying information, military intelligence, trade and tribute upto400 km in a single day across the Mongolian Steppe (Eurasian Plainlands).

This year's slogan, 'sharing the knowledge', is in line with the principles of “Great Urtuu”, whichemployed messengers travelling atop horses between relay stations around 50 km apart, whilechanging horses at these stations to maintain pace and providing resting time for horses. Theserelay stations were called ‘Urtuu’, hence the system’s name.

Outside the Mongol Empire, this system was referred to as ‘Yam’, a derivation from ‘Zam’, which is aMongolian word for road. ‘The Urtuu’ was one of the best communication system of its times. Itcovered the vast empire of Mongolia, through the difficult mountains of Khangai, deserts of Gobi, and the unforgiving plains of Steppe. In the later years, ‘The Urtuu’ became waypoints for travellers, officials and foreign dignitaries. Towns grew around these stations, and communities built uparound them.

The people behind the system were highly reliable and trustworthy individuals who were thebackbone of the entire system. Station-masters and messenger-riders enjoyed extended privileges, and the populace had to provide precedence to the rider’s requirements, and support it whenevernecessary.

‘Gerege’: Each rider had a ‘Gerege’/’Paiza’, a cylindricalmetal pendant with royal symbols engraved on it, whichcertified them as messengers of the Empire. These‘Gereges’ signified certain privileges and authority tothe bearer, and enabled them to demand goods andservices from civilian populations. Image of ‘Gerege’and the equivalent game object to be used inROBOCON are shown on the right.

‘Shagai’: It is a Mongolian word for the ankle bone of asheep or goat. These bones are collected and used fortraditional games and fortune-telling throughoutMongolia and Central Asia, and the games played withthese bones, used as dice, are also called ‘Shagai’.Convex-side-up positions (camel and horse) arefavoured ‘Shagai’ positions in the games and fortune-telling. A typical ‘Shagai’ and the equivalent gameobject to be used in ROBOCON is shown on the right.

'Uukhai’: It is the traditional battle-cry of the Nomadic Mongols before they charged on thebattlefield. It also has a sacred angle to it, and was used in official settings and rituals to wardoff evil spirits, and to muster up the warrior's spirit before battle. The ‘Uukhai Zone’ inROBOCON is a zone to celebrate and yell 'Uukhai!', as they would've completed all their tasks.

ROBOCON 2019: GAME PLAN

The DD-ROBOCON 2019 being held at IIT Delhi, New Delhi, will be following the same game plans, rules and terminologies as mentioned in the Theme and Rules Book, prepared by the ABUROBOCON 2019 Organizing Committee in Mongolia. The contents on this page and the next pageare taken as it is from ABU ROBOCON 2019 Theme and Rules Book available athttp://aburobocon2019.mnb.mn.

“A match is between Red and Blue teams. It lasts three minutes at most. Each team has one manualrobot known as Messenger-Robot 1, and one automatic robot known as Messenger-Robot 2. Theautomatic robot has four legs as of horses while wheels are not allowed. The manual robot carriesthe Gerege as a testimony from the Khangai urtuu, which is the starting point. It goes along Forest,Bridge, and crosses the Line 1 next to Gobi urtuu which is the starting point of the automatic robot. After Messenger-Robot 1 reaches Gobi urtuu, Messenger-Robot 1 passes Gerege to MessengerRobot 2 at Gobi urtuu. Once Messenger Robot 2 successfully receives Gerege, it can go along theGobi area. Messenger Robot 2 must go by four legs, like a horse, and cannot use wheels to move.Messenger-Robot 2 passes through Sand dune and Tussock, and directs to Mountain urtuu. AfterMessenger Robot 2 reaches Mountain urtuu, Messenger Robot 1 can enter Throwing zone to throwShagai, and must earn 50 or more points. In case that Messenger Robot 1 earns 50 or more points,Messenger-Robot 2 is allowed to climb the Mountain. Afterwards, if it reaches Uukhai zone andraises the Gerege first, the team is the winner, which is called UUKHAI”

An off-shoot of Robocon participations by the students of IIT Delhi from 2003 is the development of a mobile robot series called “RoboMuse”. Since 2008 it has gone through several modifications. The recent two are RoboMuse 4 and 5. RoboMuse 4 was tested at IIT Delhi as Robotic Security Assistant where it patrolled an area in Lecture Hall Complex to record videos which can be transferred to a mobile device with the security personnel. On the other hand, RoboMuse 5 has been intended to be used as Collaborative Mobile Robots for material handling in manufacturing units, warehousing, and assembly lines. This robot allows human interaction which breaks the traditional human-robot boundaries and operate along with humans.

Driverless car development project was initiat-ed at IIT Delhi in 2014 after announcement of Mahindra Driverless Car Challenge. A group of faculty along with B.Tech, M.Tech, and PhD stu-dent formed IIT Delhi Team and participated in the challenge. IIT Delhi Team dLive is among fi-nal 12 Teams working on Mahindra e2o for Final demo phase of the challenge. Team name dLive stands for Driverless Intelligent Vehicle and we at IIT Delhi are equipped to work on state-of-art technologies to make this a reality.
