We are GOING FOR GOLD at Millbrook Park School. Over the last year we have participated in lots of walking and scooting initiatives. We have had an 11% modal shift away from car use from 2015-16.
We have really focussed on walking and scooting to school. The following initiatives have been put in place over the year to promote sustainable travel to school.
● Weekend Walkies● Walking Bear● Walk About Talk About● Teaching Environmental Benefits of Active Travel● Walking Zone● Park & Stride● Step Counting Week● Scooter Pods Installed● Scooter Breakfast● Bling your Scooter● Scooter Training
As we have such a wide catchment area for our school, many parents find it easier to drive their child to school. The children have been so excited and enthusiastic about these initiatives, they have really encouraged their parents to come to school in a more sustainable way.
GOING FOR GOLD
Weekend Walkies
We introduced a ‘Weekend Walkies’ dog to nursery to encourage children to be active on the weekends. He was so popular in Nursery that Reception asked for a Weekend Walkies dog as well!
Walking Bear
Our Walking Bear was very popular in Year 1 and Year 2. Even though the weather was cold, the children rugged up and walked him to school to see different things every day!
Walk About, Talk About
Walk About, Talk About tied in nicely with Reception’s ‘Road Safety’ topic. They enjoyed learning about being safe when walking near roads. They made some posters to show their learning.
Teaching Environmental Benefits of
Travel
The children showed great interest when learning about the environmental benefits of travel. They did not know much about pollution, but they were very excited to know that by walking, they don’t cause any air pollution. We discussed the different ways we could help reduce the air pollution by coming to school in different ways. E.g. Walking, Park and Stride and Car Sharing
Walking Zone
We mapped out a ‘Walking Zone’ to show how long it would take to get to school if you parked in certain areas. This was sent to parents and put up on the ‘pick up doors’ outside classrooms.
Park & Stride
We had a ‘Park & Stride’ Challenge week. The children were challenged to leave their car at home, or park it in the 10 minute walking zone (using the walking zone poster) and walk the rest of the way to school for one whole week! The children were very excited to begin walking to school more. Many of them met at Waitrose to walk to school together in the mornings.
Step Counting Week
The children wore pedometers at school everyday for a whole week to count how many steps they did. We recorded their steps each day, and at the end of the week, they received a certificate saying how many steps they took! This was a very popular initiative, with children checking their pedometers throughout the day to try and get the highest number of steps.
Scooter Pods Installed
In July 2016, we applied to have 40 new scooter pods installed. They were ready to go for September 2016. The children have enjoyed bringing their scooter to school and keeping it safe by locking it away with a padlock. It was advertised in our newsletter to inform parents of the new changes
We held a scooter breakfast on the 19th April. It was a great way to bring the children back to school from Easter holidays. We had such a positive response from both the parents and the children, with over 70 RSVPs!

Bling Your Scooter
As a part of our Scooter Week, the children blinged their scooters and came to school earlier in the morning for a fashion parade.
Scooter Training
On the final day of ‘Scooter Week’, we held a scooter training session at lunch time. We ended up with over 80 children riding their scooters to school, excited for some training. We practiced controlling scooters on twists and turns, and stopping safely at a ‘road’ of cones.
