FROM THE PRIESTDear Families of Corpus Christi, St. Ladislas and St. Mary Parishes,There has been much change in our lives and the only constant in life is change. We hear from Sacred Scripture, from the Book of Genesis through the Book of Revelation, God calling all of us to accept change and have a “change of heart” to accept His ways, ways that are not our ways, with the life-changing Holy Spirit helping us.It has been a long and painful springtime of change, with people isolating from each other, jobs lost, and churches closed. Even more troubling is the number of people who have been infected by or succumbed to the Coronavirus. However, it seems the efforts to slow the spread have worked, and we are now on the verge of easing our restrictions. Bishop Brennan has told us that we may begin having our churches open for prayer on weekdays beginning on May 18th, and that public Masses, with appropriate safeguards, can resume beginning with the week of May 25th. God is great! In October I became the pastor of all three South End parishes. It was exciting for me and something that I very much wanted to do. I am South Ender by birth and have come to love and respect all of you as people and parishioners. However, this also posed some challenges, especially covering all the Mass times in each church. It has become both unfair and impractical for us to rely on retired priests to ensure all our Mass times are honored, especially when our churches are not filled. As we prepare to begin public celebrations again, the Spirit is now calling us, the faithful people of the South End, to recognize our need to change our ways. Beginning on Tuesday, May 26th, we will still have Mass at all the same times we had been before the pandemic; however, they will all be at St. Mary’s and they will all be celebrated by me. Bishop Brennan has asked us to take this step, and as your pastor, I’m asking you to do this with me. As we move forward, I intend to incorporate the traditions of all three churches into our liturgies, including music, adoration and other prayers. Our weekday Masses will continue to be celebrated at the same times as they had been: 6:30 pm Tuesdays; 8:30 am Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and first Saturdays at 9:00 am. Sunday celebrations will be Saturdays at 4:00 pm, and Sundays at 9:00 and 11:00 am. Additionally, we will hold Mass, in Spanish, every second Sunday of the month at 12:30 pm. All Masses will be at St. Mary’s. We ask that all contributions be made using the envelopes of your respective churches so that the revenue can be appropriately applied. We will begin opening our churches on Monday, May 18th, for private prayer. At St. Ladislas, the Adoration Chapel will be open weekdays between the hours of 7:30 am and 1:00 pm; at St. Mary’s, the church will be unlocked on weekdays from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm; and Corpus Christi is available for private prayer between the hours of 7:30 am and 1:00 pm by appointment. This tests our faith. This tests our willingness not only to change, but to rely on the Holy Spirit among us along with seeing the paths which He is calling us and leading us. Over the next few weeks and months, we will be pulling together the Parish Councils of each parish to discuss how we move forward and maintain and grow the very effective ministries that are operating at all three churches. If anyone has ideas or suggestions on how to accomplish this, please forward them to your respective Parish Council Chairperson, who will represent you at these meetings. The Chair at Corpus Christi/St. Ladislas is Laurie Knight, and her email is [email protected]. The Chair at St. Mary is Brian Collins, and his email is [email protected]. We will keep all of you updated on developments as they occur.May we respond to this change with the promptings of the Holy Spirit in faith, hope and love and pray for our South End Catholic Community! I am looking forward to being your pastor for years to come, and with the support and cooperation of everyone we can build a special, holy and vibrant church. Sincerely,Father Vince NguyenRev. Rev. Vince NguyenPastor

Memorandum To: All ParishionersFrom: Fr. Vince and Deacon RogerDate: May 20, 2020Re: Reopening the Church for MassBelow are practices in the celebration of Mass to fulfill the requirements of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, with other directives to be determined by the diocese.

Before Mass1) Bishop Brennan has dispensed the faithful from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday until Labor Day. Therefore,

a) Those who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to another with the virus within 14 days are not permitted to enter the church, in accordance with national, state and local health directives. All attendees are asked to check their temperature at home before coming to church.

b) Those who are at risk because of an underlying health issue or who are 70 or older are strongly encouraged, for their own health, to avoid the risk of attending public celebrations of the Mass.

c) The Mass will still be live-streamed (even on a daily basis), so that those unable to attend in person may maintain a spiritual connection.

2) Appropriate cleaning of high use areas within the church will be done before and after each service.

a) The pews utilized by the assembly will be wiped down with disinfectant.

b) All hymnals and missalettes have been removed from the pews and stored for the duration of the pandemic. Worship aids will be provided, but we ask that you take them with you when you leave; no other materials may be left in the pews. The faithful are encouraged to bring their own missals or hymnals or smartphones for use during the celebration of Mass.

c) Restroom facilities and door handles, push plates, and knobs will be sanitized after each service.

3) Holy water fonts will remain empty until further notice.

4) Hand sanitizer is available at the entry to the church.

5) The faithful are obliged to wear a mask upon entering the church and during the celebration of Mass, unless they are under the age of two. You are asked to continue wearing the mask except for the brief moment of receiving Holy Communion. Ushers and other volunteers are to wear masks and gloves (when gloves are not available, frequent handwashing will be necessary) throughout the celebration of Mass. Those at the altar are to wear a mask if distributing Holy Communion.

6) Clergy and other ministers are to maintain six-foot distancing and should not greet parishioners as they enter the church.

During Mass1) Entry and exit doors will be adequately designated and monitored. Entry doors are to be propped or held open before Mass, and exit doors

are to be propped or held open at the end of Mass to prevent people from touching the door handles, knobs or push plates.

MASS INTENTIONS/INTENCIONES MASIVASScheduled Mass intentions will still be honored by Father Vince, offering the Mass privately. If you would like to reschedule your Mass intention date(s), please call the parish office.

2) Staff, ushers or other volunteers should assist with directing people to pews; we will leave every-other pew vacant. Attendance may be limited to assure compliance with social distancing requirements.

3) Families are to maintain six-foot distancing between their family and other families or individuals throughout the celebration of Mass.

a) Seating is to be arranged such that six feet of distance can be maintained between members of one household and members of another.

b) One pew is to be left vacant in between parishioners such that six feet of distance can be maintained in all directions.

c) Music ministers are to maintain six-foot social distancing.

4) Procession of the Gifts is suspended. Collection baskets (or any other materials) will not be passed from one family to another, nor will ushers take up the collection from the congregation. Stationary baskets will be used for donations from the assembly and will be monitored by the ushers until the donations are collected and handled according to parish protocols.

5) The sign of peace is suspended.

6) Priests or deacons who are in at-risk groups are permitted to refrain from distributing Holy Communion and can delegate distribution to other Communion ministers.

7) Distribution of communion will happen after Mass. Ushers or other volunteers who are masked and gloved will ensure six-foot distancing in the communion line. We ask that parishioners keep at least one pew apart from the person in front of you as you approach the sanctuary for communion to facilitate proper social distancing.

8) Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will not be needed at this time to prevent the spread of germs.

9) Distribution of Holy Communion from the chalice is prohibited to the assembly and vested deacons. For those who are gluten intolerant, special arrangements are to be made with the pastor.

10) Maintaining a single file line is necessary for the distribution of Holy Communion for each Communion minister, and communicant to maintain social distancing and one-way traffic patterns.

11) Those who refrain from receiving communion still unite themselves with the sacrifice of Christ. Non-communicants are kindly asked to remain in their places rather than process to request a blessing—a blessing all receive at the end of Mass.

12) When approaching Fr. Vince or Deacon Roger, the communicant is to pull their mask below their chin in order to receive Communion. The communicant immediately replaces their mask after consuming the Host. Communion in the hand is strongly suggested.

After Mass1) Family units should depart the church in an organized manner wearing masks and observing six feet of distance between other households.

Ushers or clergy may need to direct this process.

2) Ushers are not to hand out bulletins or other materials.

3) Clergy and other ministers are not to greet parishioners as they exit the church.

4) There are to be no receptions or social gatherings (e.g., coffee and doughnuts) following Mass.

5) Pews and other high traffic areas of the church are to be wiped down before the next service, with the removal of trash and other items from the pews.

The Ascension of the Lord May 24, 2020

Jesus Took His Place Gospel Reflection by Pope John Paul II on the Ascension of Our Lord

With joy then and fresh resolves for the future, let us reflect briefly on the great mystery of today’s liturgy. In the Scripture readings the whole significance of Christ’s Ascension is summarized for us. The richness of this mystery is spelled out in two statements: Jesus gave instructions, and then Jesus took his place.

In the providence of God – in the eternal design of the Father – the hour had come for Christ to go away. He would leave his Apostles behind, with his Mother Mary, but only after he had given them his instructions. The Apostles now had a mission to perform according to the instructions that Jesus left, and these instructions were in turn the faithful expression of the Father’s will.

The instructions indicated, above all, that the Apostles were to wait for the Holy Spirit, who was the gift of the Father. From the beginning, it had to be crystal-clear that the source of the Apostles’ strength is the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who guides the Church in the way of truth; the Gospel is to spread through the power of God, and not by means of human wisdom or strength.

The Apostles, moreover, were instructed to teach – to proclaim the Good News to the whole world. And they were to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Like Jesus, they were to speak explicitly about the Kingdom of God and about salvation. The Apostles were to give witness to Christ to the ends of the earth. The early Church clearly understood these instructions and the missionary era began. And everybody knew that this missionary era could never end until the same Jesus, who went up to heaven, would come back again.

The words of Jesus became a treasure for the Church to guard and to proclaim, to meditate on and to rive. And at the same time, the Holy Spirit implanted in the Church an apostolic charism, in order to keep this revelation intact. Through his words Jesus was to live on in his Church: I am with you always. And so the whole ecclesial community became conscious of the need for fidelity to the instructions of Jesus, to the deposit of faith. This solicitude was to pass from generation to generation – down to our own day.

And the second reflection on the meaning of the Ascension is found in this phrase: Jesus took his place. After having undergone the humiliation of his passion and death, Jesus took his place at the right-hand of God; he took his place with his eternal Father. But he also entered heaven as our Head. Whereupon, in the expression of Leo the Great, the glory of the Head became the hope of the body. For all eternity Christ takes his place as the firstborn among many brethren: our nature is with God in Christ. And as man, the Lord Jesus lives for ever to intercede for us with Father. At the same time, from his throne of glory, Jesus sends out to the whole Church a message of hope and a call to holiness.Excerpted from Homily of His Holiness John Paul II, Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord, 24 May 1979 http://w2.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/homilies/1979/documents/hf_jp-ii_hom_19790524_seminari-ingl-roma.html

St. Philip NeriThe Patron Saint of Joy & Humor

St. Philip Neri was a Christian missionary and founder of the Congregation of the Oratory, a community of Catholic priests and lay brothers. From a very young age, Philip was known for being cheerful and obedient. A mystical vision at the age of 18 led to his Christian conversion, and this encounter with the Lord dramatically changed his life and led him to serve Jesus Christ and His Church. Philip was an evangelist. He had a knack for starting up conversations and leading his listeners to consider a new and better way of life, the Christian Way. He easily caught others’ attention with his warm personality and incredible sense of humor. He encouraged groups of people to gather for discussions, studies, prayer and the enjoyment of music. His customary question was always, “Well, brothers, when shall we begin to do good?” [He lost] no time in converting good conversation to good actions, [and] would lead his followers to hospitals to wait on the sick or to the Church, to pray to and encounter Jesus Christ. In the words of one of his biographers, Philip was “all things to all men.... When he was called upon to be merry, he was so; if there was a demand upon his sympathy, he was equally ready...” Philip was respected and loved throughout Rome; he became a trusted advisor to popes, kings, cardinals and equally as important to the poor. He whole-heartedly desired the reform of the Catholic Church and worked toward that with a sense of gentleness and friendship, rather than criticism and harshness.

If your soul feels weighed down by the anxieties of the world, or if you desire to see the joy of the Gospel in a new way, pray to St. Philip Neri.

O holy St. Philip Neri, patron saint of joy, you who trusted Scripture’s promise that the Lord is always at hand and that we need not have anxiety about anything, in

your compassion heal our worries and sorrows and lift the burdens from our hearts. We come to you as one whose heart swells with abundant love for God and all creation. Hear us, we pray, especially in this need (make your request here).

Keep us safe through your loving intercession, and may the joy of the Holy Spirit which filled your heart, St. Philip, transform our lives and bring us peace. Amen.
