Take a close look. See anyone (or more) familiar? Yes indeed it is our
own director Richard Lewellen directing the new startup women’s
chorus “Bella Nova”. They had their first practice last Sunday. Inspired
by our adopted gold medal Harmony
Inc. champions “Epic”. The Jubil-Aires congratulate this newest
Harmony Inc. chorus and wish them all the best in their quest for singing
excellence!

Jubil-Aires and Jubil-Ladies, We now have the needed
information regarding our
invitation to participate in next summer’s “Festival
Verona Garda Estate” performances held in Verona, Italy, and three
neighboring cities (Brescia, Mantua, and Vicenza).
As you know, there are four time periods to
choose from: June 26-29, July 3-6, July 10-13, and July 17-20. Each period is Thursday
through Sunday. There will be four performances, in four venues, in four
different cities, on four separate nights. Unfortunately, Richard has direct or
indirect conflicts during each of those periods.
Fortunately, Tom Meier will be able to participate and direct.
So the next step is to find out whether enough chorus members are interested. The best choice seems to be July 10-13, the
third period, though it is possible that the fourth or first could work. (The second period
conflicts with Internationals in Las Vegas.) So, I am asking all members to let me
know whether you are ready, willing, and
able to make a commitment to participate in the July 10-13 period—barring unforeseen
and unexpected contingencies, of course. Take into account your other vacation plans and limits, as well as the opportunity to
expand this trip, and (for this purpose) assume that most of the costs will be borne
by the participating members. (See last week’s What’s Happening? for more
information about costs and other aspects of the festival.)
I’d appreciate it if you would let me know
directly by email [email protected] (a few of you already have), or you can wait and
check the appropriate box at rehearsal. Indicate whether you:
A. Will choose to go, barring unforeseen
conflicts. B. Choose not to go.
C. Are not yet sure (and feel free to provide an explanation of what your choice will depend on, if you want).
D. Can’t go July 10-13, but would give a difference answer for a different time
period. After we know the level of interest, the
Board (with Richard and Tom) will meet to
decide whether and how to go forward.
It’s Great to be a Jubil-Aire!

Potomac Green Concert
-Phil Merkel- FROM: Potomac Green social committee
Please give our thanks
and congratulations to
your wonderful Jubil-Aires for another fantastic
concert here at Potomac Green Saturday evening! As if the pleasure of
listening to you all sing so beautifully wasn’t enough, to look around the room and see so
many people with happy faces was double the pleasure for me! I hope you and your group
also heard the delight with the concert that people expressed when they were leaving. Please also thank your wonderful Jubil-Aire
Ladies for their delicious refreshments and help with clean-up! On a more personal note,
you are a joy to work with Phil, thank you so much for your efforts here in Potomac Green.

You guys made me a hero in my own neighborhood. I heard nothing but good comments about how everyone enjoyed our performance. One fellow even remarked as to how animated and expressive we all were on the risers. The sponsor asked if she could put us on the calendar for next year, and of course I agreed. So, hearty and prodigious thanks to everyone for making this both an entertainment and financial success! --- Phil

After Potomac Green
Concert
-Art Medici-
Following the chorus performance at Potomac Green Saturday night,
Pat, and Art went to the Great Falls Tavern for
open microphone night with Tom Saputo at the keyboard. Letitia from
Guatemala was celebrating a birthday and
had a balloon sculpture flamingo setting on the chair next to her. Pat
picked it up and started serenading it with "Today, I Started Loving You Again."
Unfortunately, there were no scouts from “American’s Got Talent” in the audience. At least one chorus member can do balloon
sculpture.

Residents of the Fair Oaks
Sunrise Retirement Home
-John Knueven- So how many times do
the Jubil-Aires get a standing ovation at a retirement home???
Admittedly there were not many people who COUND
stand, but a few did! Shameless had previously
committed to singing at Byron Hatch’s
residence, but at the last minute Chris got called out-of-town. Cliff made a last-minute
appeal to the JA membership, and at least 15

members responded and sang their best!
We brought Byron Hatch to the fore to lead the audience in singing “Let Me Call You
Sweetheart” and “My Wild Irish Rose”. The residents went “wild” and Byron says they
can’t stop talking to him about it.
Thanks to all who participated!
Buses stop in bus stations. Trains stop in train stations. On my desk is a work station.
2013 Trailblazers Event (CANCALLED)
I regret to have to announce that the 2013 Trailblazers event has been cancelled. While I
had moderate response right out of the chute (7 people initially said they would like to attend the event) we have gotten no further
interested from over a dozen area chapters. There were only 2 people that have RSVP’d
for the event. If enough people express an interest, we
might try to find an agreeable date to try
again next year.

at the Kennedy Center is not.
I want to personally extend an invitation to all of

can even add your two cents in the talk back session
which will follow the reading.
Hope to see you soon!

I've received many remarkable nature

a nesting Falcon is perhaps the most remarkable nature shot that I've ever seen. I
hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Nature is truly breath-taking!

States Air Force, is one of the world's most versatile and traveled choral organizations. Originally formed in 1945 from the ranks of The United States Army Air Forces Band, the chorus has a long heritage of excellence. It is comprised of 18 professional Airmen vocalists, recruited from the finest colleges, universities and music conservatories to serve as active-duty musicians in the United States Air Force.
The Singing Sergeants have appeared before every chief executive of the United States since President Truman, and regularly perform at events for the White House, State Department, Department of Defense and for many other high-level military and civilian functions. Using music to bridge language, cultural, and other differences, the Singing Sergeants’ performances advance international relationships by inspiring positive and long-lasting impressions of the United States and the United States Air Force.
Presenting the music of America to audiences worldwide, the chorus demonstrates Air Force excellence to millions through live performances and radio, television and internet broadcasts. The chorus frequently performs for service members and their families, from the Chief of Staff to the most junior Airmen, enhancing troop morale and esprit de corps. Through national and international tours, the Singing Sergeants have reached audiences in all 50 states, 49 countries, and have appeared with acclaimed orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia, Cleveland, Houston and National Symphony Orchestras, and the Boston and Cincinnati Pops.
The Singing Sergeants have been featured at divisional and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Educators National Conference and Chorus America. Additionally, the chorus has performed on some of the greatest stages in the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the John F. GRANDE FESTIVAL CORALE VERONA GARDA ESTATE 2014 (ITALIA)
Dear President,
The Organizing Committee of the “Festival Verona Garda Estate” has decided to invite your interesting choir
to participate and represent your country in Italy in 2014!
The choral Festival takes place in the provinces of Verona (www.tourism.verona.it), Brescia
(www.comune.brescia.it), Mantua (www.turismo.mantova.it), Vicenza (www.vicenza.org) and the Garda Lake
during the month of June-July 2014.
The festival is divided in four equal parts:
First part: 26, 27, 28, 29 June (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Second part: 3, 4, 5, 6 July (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Third part: 10, 11, 12,13 July (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Fourth part: 17, 18, 19, 20 July (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
Each choir can choose the most suitable part in which it participates.
In each festival 6-8 choirs will be invited. In total there will be up to 30 foreign choirs to participate together with
some local Italian choirs.
The participating choirs will perform in four concerts or alternatively participate in a Mass with a short
concert following, which means one performance a day, each one in a different city. The concerts are held
mainly in churches but also in theatres or squares suitable for choral concerts.
In each concert there will be two foreign choirs (sometimes three) and a local choir if present. The performing
couple changes every night. Each choir will have 20-35 minutes for an a cappella program of free choice, either
religious or secular program, depending of the place of the concert. The duration of the program depends on how
many choirs are present. In the Mass there will perform two choirs.
A score of two simple compositions will be sent to each choir well in advance. The choirs will sing these
compositions all together in each concert or Mass. The rehearsal for these two songs will be agreed with the
choirs at a later time.
Organization
The rating of the hotels the organization will offer you is at least three stars or higher. The offer for each choir
includes two singles and the requested amount of doubles or triples. A full board is also included in the offer,
starting with dinner on Thursday night and ending at the breakfast on Monday morning. The meals include
several dishes and also water and wine. The meals will familiarize you with the delicious local Italian cuisine.

from choirs who have stayed in Italy.
Please note also that the organization will provide a guide to go with you also during your extra days in Italy if
required.
I remain at your disposal to answer all your questions and hope that our proposal meets with your approval.
