GUIDELINESAnchor: South Africa's ambassador to

Indonesia Norman Mashabane has won his appeal against an internal disciplinary hearing which found him guilty of sexual harassment in 2001 and again in 2003. The Department of Foreign Affairs issued a short statement on the matter yesterday. Department spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa was not available for comment.

With me in the studio is Sandra Botha, spokesperson for the Democratic Alliance.

Ms Botha, what is your reaction to this development?

Sandra Botha: It's difficult to understand what could have led to this decision. On the face of it, the evidence against him was strong. There were 22 counts, so it was not just his word against one other person's. It's astonishing.

Anchor: Is the Democratic Alliance considering any further action?

Sandra Botha: We have already approached the office of the public prosecutor to probe the Department's handling of Mashabane's case. We'll continue to investigate, and we'll be taking a closer look at the appeal process that cleared him.

A transcript of the radio broadcast for this tutorial is in the box to the right. Read it and then respond to the questions on the subsequent slides.

After each question, the correct answer will be shown and an explanation will be given.

The transcript will remain in the right hand pane for the duration of the quiz. Good luck!

QUESTION 3

What is the scope of this story, assuming you are coding in South Africa?

1. Local

2. National

3. National and other

4. Foreign/International

Always code according to the widest applicable scope. If there is a story that is of both local and national importance

code national.

In this case, we have a South-African news cast on an event that took place

in South Africa and has national importance. Coders in South Africa would therefore code 2. Though it is

unlikely that this story would be broadcast outside the country, coders from another country would code 4.
