The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology’s courses inLetterfrack are run in partnership with Connemara West (a community and rural development organisation based inNorth-West Connemara). Since 1987, the partnership hasmanaged and run furniture courses.
The aim of GMIT at Letterfrack is to enable its graduates tocontribute to, and influence, the fields of design processesand manufacture of furniture in ways that are innovative,creative and responsive to the needs and development of aquality Irish furniture industry.

The Higher Certificate in Engineering in Furniture Design &Manufacture has been running for over seventeen years, andhas developed a reputation for quality and high standardsin the education of people for the furniture industry throughthe successful merging of design education andtechnological skills.
Higher Certificate in Engineering in Furniture Productionwas developed in response to demand from companies inthe industry for graduates educated in the area of furnitureproduction including the ability to operate equipment anddevelop a manufacturer’s production capability.
A three year Bachelor of Science in Furniture Conservation &Restoration commenced in September 2001. It equipsstudents with the skills and knowledge to becomeprofessional conservators and restorers of furniture andother wooden objects.
An expanded two-year add-onBSc Hons Degree in FurnitureTechnology is now offeringapplicants the opportunity tospecialise in either ProductDesign or ManufacturingTechnology. The programmeaims to equip students with thetheoretical and appliedknowledge which is needed tooperate at managerial orfunctional specialist level withinthe furniture industry.
There is a high demand byemployers for graduates fromall programmes at the College.The College has establishedlinkages with industry andcolleges abroad over the past
number of years. Through thoselinkages the college places a number of students on workexperience each year under the EU LEONARDO programme.
The College promotes a range of extra curricular activitiesfor students, these include College teams that participate innational third-level competitions in hurling, soccer andgaelic football.

What is this course about?Graduates of this course will develop designand making skills and knowledge to conceive,develop, make and finish high quality furniturefor differing commercial environments andclientele, which can range from craft based tomedium scale industrial production.Graduates will acquire an understanding ofmaterials and manufacturing technologies, thebusiness environment, marketing, health andsafety, and the historical context of furnitureand design.

Entry RequirementsThe minimum entry requirements are: Pass(Grade D3 or better) in Five Leaving Certificatesubjects including, Mathematics and English orIrish, and a Pass in an interview/portfolioassessment that will take place in GMITLetterfrack in April/early May.
The interview/portfolio assessment is markedout of 600 points and places on the course areawarded on the aggregation of LeavingCertificate points and Assessment points.
Career Opportunities:Graduates are equipped to secure positions insmall to medium sized furniture manufacturingcompanies, being capable of undertaking smallproduction runs, batch manufacture andspecialist furniture orders. Many graduates,after gaining industrial experience, establishtheir own businesses.

What is this course about?This Higher Certificate programme will providegraduates with the education and skills infurniture production which are associated withbatch and volume production environments.Graduates will develop knowledge of currentmanufacturing technologies and the capabilityto manufacture furniture of quality andprecision in competitive commercialenvironments.
Graduates will be able to:◆ Explain the nature and properties of
materials and finishes used in the furnitureindustry.

Applicants for this course should be interestedin problem solving and manufacturing processtechniques and should be comfortable withmathematics and analytical subjects generally.It would also be helpful to have studied one ormore of the following subjects: Science,Computing, Engineering, Construction orTechnical Drawing.
Careers Opportunities:Graduates will be employed in medium to largewood and furniture manufacturing companieswhere a knowledge of manufacturing andproduction technologies are required. Withexperience, the graduate will be well placed towork at a senior level in a wood processing,furniture manufacturing or timber productsmanufacturing facility. What is this course about?This ordinary level degree programme aims toprovide students with a thorough knowledge oftraditional furniture making and finishingprocesses, current conservation and restorationmethods as well as the scientific and businesscapabilities to pursue a career in furniturerestoration and conservation.
The programme aims to produce competentprofessional furniture conservators/restorerswith a high level of practical skill, a soundtheoretical base, and an understanding of thehistorical, ethical and aesthetic aspects of thesubject. The graduate will have theopportunity to deepen and build upon theprogramme through work experience, furtherstudies and later specialisation.

Career Opportunities:There is an extensive untapped furniturerestoration/conservation market in Ireland invernacular and fashionable furniture, as well asother wooden objects in museums, heritagecentres, antique businesses, state and semi-state bodies and private collections. Graduatesfrom the ordinary level degree programme willbe in a position to enter this market either asemployees of other conservators/restorers, by

sub-contracting or by establishing their ownbusinesses. In addition, the range and level ofexpertise of the graduates also open upopportunities for international employment.
What subjects will I study?There are six subject areas, which are carriedthrough the three years:1. Traditional Processes - Traditional cabinet
making skills using hand tools, power andmachine tools.
2. Furniture Materials - The nature of timber,timber derivatives, metals and othermaterials.
3. Conservation Science – The scientificaspects of furniture restoration and conservation.
4. Communication Skills – Freehandsketching, technical drawing, photography,computers, information technology andreport writing.
5. Furniture History – The influence ofhistoric, economic, social, cultural andpolitical factors on furniture styles,materials and construction.
6. Restoration Business - The procedural,institutional and ethical environmentwithin which furniture conservation andrestoration business strategies must bedevised.

What is this course about? This programme is designed to provide degreelevel studies relevant to the furniture andwood-related industries. Two options areoffered within the programme: manufacturingand product design. Applicants choose one ofthese options as their core specialisation, andalso share a range of common subjects.
The programme equips students with thetheoretical and practical techniques which willenable them to function as professionals withinthe furniture and wood products industry. TheDegree is characterised by applied studies inareas such as materials, product development,outsourcing, quality, information systems,furniture design, prototyping, CAD, CAM,resource management and market influencesrelevant to the Irish furniture industry.
This is a dynamic programme in which projectsare structured to simulate real-worldsituations, which require the students toengage in creative problem solving activitiesand draw on their knowledge and experience.Study visits to companies, international tradeshows, and the experience gained through workplacement are important sources of learningopportunities that are highly valued andexploited on the programme.

Course Duration:Two years full-time including 3 month workplacement over Summer Period.
Career Opportunities:Graduates will be employed in variouspositions in the furniture and wood productsmanufacturing industries and related areas.Typical areas of employment include furnituredesign, production management, plant designand layout, machine selection and purchase,furniture production including finishing andupholstery, the application of design,outsourcing, product development andprototyping and the implementation of qualitysystems. To date, demand for graduates of theprogramme has been very high. Several recentgraduates have progressed to senior positionswhile some others have chosen entrepreneurialoptions.
