TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL

As our Grade 8 students begin to think about next year and beyond. Families begin to make decisions about high schools and course selection. This year the DSBN will once again be working to support students and families make these decisions.

Elementary Schools will be creating transition teams, including administrators, teach-ers, and secondary school guidance counselors to support grade 9 course selection.

Virtual Open Houses with give students and their families a sneak peek into the high schools and will include videos, tours and live Questions and Answers, during the week of November 29th. More information and details will be messaged out to our Grade 8 families as the dates approach.

In preparation for our observance of Remembrance Day on November 11th, we are

asking our families to share with us stories of family members, living or dead, who

have served or are currently serving as part of our Canadian Military. We have

asked families to provide the name, rank, branch of the armed forces in which your

relative served, and a space to add a few details or a description. If you have any

photos or memorabilia, you can send a scan of a photo or a picture of the artefact

and we will include it in our slideshow for our virtual assembly.

We will create a Roll of Honour of names and stories that are provided to us. The

deadline is November 8, 2021. If you have submitted an individual for the Roll in

the past please just complete section one so we can be sure to include them in this

year’s Roll of Honour. Roll of Honour Form

This year we will be recognizing Remem-

brance Day with a virtual assembly on

November 11th. We are also planning a

whole school gathering outside, weather

permitting. If you have any questions,

please contact me at school.

Thank you for supporting our efforts to

make this event meaningful for students

and families.

On November 18, students in Kindergarten will bring home the Communication of Learning Initial Observations report. This provides parents/guardians with an over-view of the initial observations of their child’s learning and early evidence of growth in learning related to the overall expectations in the Kindergarten Program. It also provides information about appropriate next steps to further your child’s learning. It serves as the basis for discussion with parents/guardians and as a support for par-ents’/guardians’ ongoing participation in their child’s learning. Also, on November 18, parents of students in Grades 1-8 will receive their Elemen-tary Progress Reports. Although it looks much like the Report Card, the Progress Report has a very different intent. The purpose is to share early and specific feed-back on your child’s development of work habits and the learning skills. Reporting on the Progress Report is about looking forward and setting a course for the learn-ing journey ahead. Based on the evidence that teachers see, as well as what teachers know about learning at this grade level, the report communicates the path your child is on to-wards achieving the grade level expectations by the end of the year. The Progress Report does not include letter grades or percentage marks for academic subjects; it instead identifies whether your child is progressing very well, well or with difficulty. For subjects in which your child is ‘Progressing with Difficulty’, the teacher will dis-cuss specific next step plans needed for success. Progress reports are intended to be part of discussions, interviews, or conferences with students and are part of ongoing communication with parents and students about student achievement throughout the year. We look forward to partnering with you and your child for a year of great learning and growth.

being exposed to COVID-19.

Masks (face coverings) should allow for easy breathing, fit securely to the head with ties or ear loops, be comfortable, not require frequent adjustment, and fit securely to cover the nose, mouth, and chin without gaping.

Louis Riel Day is held every year on November 16 across the Métis home-lands. November 16 is the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885. During that year, Riel led Métis people in the North-west Resistance, which was a stand against the Government of Canada be-cause it was encroaching on Metis rights and their way-of-life.

The Métis were defeated at the siege of Batoche and the Canadian government captured Riel. He was eventually put on trial where he was convicted of trea-son and executed.

As a result, Métis people across Cana-da were labeled as traitors and for gen-erations many felt the need to hide their Métis culture and heritage.

Despite this oppression, many Métis people found a way to preserve their way-of-life and passed it on to current generations. Today, the strength of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is a tes-tament to the courage of their ances-tors.

LOUIS RIEL DAY

Beginning in the early 1600s, the British Crown (later the Government of Canada) en-tered into a series of treaties with Indigenous nations in Canada. The treaties were in-tended as formal agreements to encourage peaceful relations and to specify promises, obligations and benefits for both parties.

Indigenous peoples wanted to protect their traditional lands, resources, and ways of life, while ensuring peace and friendship. Today, everyone agrees that First Nations peoples agreed to share some of their land and resources in in exchange for goods and services. The terms of this exchange would ultimately be understood differently by the parties involved.

Treaty Recognition Week is November 1-5 for 2021. Treaties Recognition Week helps students, staff, and the public learn about treaties from diverse Indigenous perspec-tives and encourages greater understanding of the importance of treaties across the land.
