PRINCIPAL’S REPORTWelcome back to our students, families and staff. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to new families to the school and our broader community.

We welcome three new teachers: Mr Chris Murray has been appointed Head Teacher Technology and Applied Studies; Mrs Cathy Hoskin has been appointed teacher to the Multi-categorical class (MC Class); and Ms Tess Nolan has been appointed to the Teacher Librarian position. We welcome them to our school. Mr Sharpe (Mathematics teacher) retired at the end of last year. Staffing were unable to provide us with an appointed Mathematics replacement teacher. We are currently undertaking the merit selection process in the hope of recruiting a Mathematics teacher. We are also in the process of recruiting an English/History teacher to replace Mr Frankcombe who has also retired.

We have received another demountable classroom. It has been situated adjacent to the farm, which will suit the Agriculture classes.

I would like to congratulate the Year 12 students from 2019 for the outstanding HSC results. Once again our school has outranked all high schools in our two districts and most in the Newcastle area. This is testament

to the dedication of staff, student commitment to learning and the senior success study program. I would also like to thank the many community members who gave their time to work/coach/tutor many of our students. Your ongoing support to our school is very much appreciated. With less than 45 students seeking an ATAR, there were 12 Band 6’s and 51 Band 5’s awarded to our students. Congratulations to these students and best wishes to all our past Year 12 students in their future endeavours.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Howarth in progressing to the next level of the Rotary Youth of the Year Public Speaking Competition. This was held in Taree and she was competing against students from Port Macquarie and Kempsey. We wish you well in the next round.

We have had air-conditioning installed into all teaching spaces under the Cooler Classroom’s program. This is going to make the learning environment more comfortable for our students and teachers, particularly during the very hot days. We will be re-using a few of the good air conditioners in teacher staff rooms that are currently not air conditioned. The hall has been a priority to air-condition, however this was not included in the Cooler Classrooms program. Our P&C have been raising funds to air condition the hall and together with school funds this is a doable project. We are waiting for the Department of Education to log the current electrical capacity of the school to determine whether a transformer upgrade is required. Watch this space.

It was wonderful to see our students enjoying themselves at the annual swimming carnival. The weather was ideal, not too hot, not too cold… just right. Many thanks to Mr Cameron for his thorough organisation of the day. Big thank you to Mrs Cameron and Mrs Martin for the delicious morning tea on the day. Thanks also to the parents who were able to come and support their child, to the staff who kept the program running to schedule and to the students who had a great day. Congratulations to all students who participated and especially to those who did a personal best in their races.

P & CThe next P&C meeting will be the AGM held Monday 17 February 2020, 7pm in room BG18.

Gloucester High School P&C is the parent, citizen and carer body that works in close cooperation with the Principal and staff to enhance the learning experience for students. We work closely with school staff on policy and other issues.

The P&C’s main fundraising comes from the running of the canteen and the sale of uniforms. These funds are used to provide facilities and equipment for the school. We also have a small sub-committee that supports the running of the school farm and cattle show events.

Being a member of the P&C allows you to meet regularly with both the Principal and other staff members, hear firsthand about funding, curriculum and program initiatives and more importantly, it gives you the chance to offer your own views and opinions on a variety of issues. The P&C meets on the third Monday of each month and membership is just 50c.

We welcome new members at all times and there is no pressure to take on a role. We would like to take this chance to invite you to the P&C AGM on Monday 17 February at 7pm in room BG18, followed by the February general meeting. Please come along and meet with the current members and staff and have your say.

Bookkeeper NeededThe bookkeeper position for the GHS P & C canteen falls vacant on 1/1/20. We are looking for a person who will be experienced in the calculation of wages (MYOB, payslips, group certificates, PAYG tax, superannuation) and completion of BAS statements every quarter. Further duties include compiling accounts for payment, producing monthly reports for P & C meetings, liaising with canteen manager and P & C treasurer, and maintaining appropriate records. Please contact Fiona O’Brien (0418218192) or Eve Green (0488993827) for further information.

2019 PRESENTATION NIGHT BOOK VOUCHERS Students who received a book voucher at last year’s Presentation Night please redeem ASAP at Gloucester Book Shop.

SCHOOL CANTEENThe school canteen provides a healthy and broad range of food and drinks. The Canteen Manager is Mrs Lisa Norrie.Lisa is always looking for volunteer helpers to assist in the preparation of and/or the serving of food for students. This means a commitment of time once or twice a term or less (if we get more volunteers) for two or three hours. Thisis an enormous, helpful contribution that you can make for the good of the school and its students. Please considervolunteering.

SIGN-OUT PROCEDURESRequests for permission to leave the school during the day must be made in writing to a Head Teacher, who then authorises the leave. The student should then take the signed note to the school office where they will then be issued a “pass out” slip.Parents are required to meet the student in the school office foyer and sign out the student in the Early/Late Student Register.

WELCOME YEAR 7

Year 7 have started their high school journey on a truly positive note. They have settled well into their new classes and learnt to navigate their timetables remarkably well. I want to thank our new Year 7 students for the positive and enthusiastic start they have made and congratulate them for their consideration of others and in particular, their welcoming of new students to their friendship groups.

All students will have the opportunity to nominate for the vacant Year 7 positions on the School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) soon. These are very prestigious positions within the student body and all Year 7 students interested in developing their leadership skills will be encouraged to nominate. Application forms will be available from SRC Coordinator, Ms Donaldson, in the near future.

It has been a great start to our year and I look forward to the weeks and months ahead. Remember, come and see me if you have any queries or concerns.

Ms Judith Pickett, Y7 Year Adviser

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONSCongratulations to Elizabeth Howarth and Zac Holllis who recently performed at the Australia Day breakfast and celebrations in Gloucester.

They led the audience in the National Anthem at the flag raising ceremony and also performed the song “I Am Australian” during the breakfast.

Our School Captains, Bethany Hester and Ethan Bird, were also in attendance, representing our school with pride when delivering their Australia Day speeches.

Thank you to these students for giving up their holiday time to help entertain the local community on such a special day. You did a great job!

Judy Ingram, Music Teacher

An exert from our School Captains’ Australia Day speeches:“What we eat, wear or say doesn’t make us Aussie, our morals, values and connections do. And this has been evident in these past few months especially. The whole of Australia has come together and become one, in order to face the trauma brought by the drought and bushfires. And by doing that, we have also brought the interest of many other countries around the world. We take lots of pride in our country and think so highly of it. So if anything hurts it we will do anything to protect it. We Aussies have a fighting spirit and we won’t give up until peace is restored. As you can see, Aussies are a special kind of people. We pay more attention to what brings us together and less about what separates us. We love to look for the good in people. And we understand that segregated we fall, but together we stand. That’s why I’m so honored to call this beautiful country my home and call my fellow Aussies family.”

Bethany Hester, School Captain

“Our country forms a part of who we are. In many places around the world, people fear their country. They fear the lurking possibility of danger everywhere they go. They feel trapped in their world, and seek to escape to somewhere that at least gives them safety, let alone freedom.Australia is a place of freedom. It is a country, run on democracy, that strives to give all Australians a fair go. In my opinion, Australia day is about celebrating our community. It is about being there for each other, and recognising those who have had a positive impact. With the devastating effects of the ongoing drought and fires raging across Australia and our region, this day recognises not only the efforts of those who have risked their lives for the safety of others, but also those who have contributed in other ways to uniting our community.Australia Day should recognise the efforts of those who are willing to help, such as the volunteers giving their time and those risking their lives to protect others from bushfires.Part of our culture as a nation is being willing to help others in need.– These are the people that make me proud to be a part of this community.”

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAMEach year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2020 the following vaccines will be offered:

YEARS VACCINE NUMBER OF DOSES

Year 7 Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine 2-doses at least 6 months apart

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine Single dose

Years 10 Meningococcal ACWY vaccine Single dose

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

• read all the information provided

• complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive

• return the completed consent form to their child’s school

• ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses during Year 7 or 8 (for HPV and dTpa vaccination) and during Year 10 or 11 (for Menignococcal ACWY vaccination).

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/withdraw_consent.aspx

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card or a text message sent to the mobile number recorded on the consent form. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.

ELIZABETH THROUGH TO FINALSElizabeth Howarth competed in the semi finals for the Rotary Public speaking competition at Club Taree last night. Her prepared speech was on the impacts of social media, and her 2 minute impromptu speech was on the topic, The most inspirational person to me is.

She spoke very well and progressed through to the finals with another student from Port Macquarie!

A date for the finals has not been released yet.

WELLBEING AT GLOUCESTER HIGH SCHOOLWelcome back to students, staff and parents as we embark on a new decade in 2020. The wellbeing program at Gloucester High School will continue to align with our CARER values. Under the NSW Department of Education’s Wellbeing Framework, each and every student is given the opportunity to CONNECT, SUCCEED AND THRIVE.

Gloucester High School is a “Be You” school. This is a federal government initiative that is run in partnership with Beyond Blue and Headspace. Gloucester High School signed up to this program in 2019.

The program supersedes the former Mind Matters initiative which Gloucester High School has been associated with for many years. The wellbeing team is currently completing the training modules for this program. Ms Ribbons and Miss Ross also attended the Positive Schools conference in 2019 to gain further knowledge of this program and its implementation in schools.

Be You is all about growing a mentally healthy generation. Be You provides educators with knowledge and skills to help young people achieve their best possible mental health. There are several areas the program covers and these include; wellbeing, development, social and emotional learning, relationships, mental health issues and conditions, mental health support, grief, trauma and critical incidents.

At Gloucester High School, all students in Years 7-10 have a timetabled wellbeing lesson once per fortnight. Topics and learning materials are based on the Be You program. The team of Year Advisers, Girls Adviser and Boys Adviser and myself will continue to support all students as they grow and learn this year to help them achieve the best possible learning outcomes. There will be a number of school wide wellbeing initiatives throughout the year commencing with the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence in March.

Should you wish to discuss any concerns you have about your child or the wellbeing program, please contact me at school.

Ms Myree Ribbons , Head Teacher Wellbeing
