My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I know it is hard to believe, but Lent is upon us. It is that time of the Church year to take time to really look at ourselves and our lives in Christ. Lent has been observed since early in the mid-4th Century and is a time of preparation before the celebration of Easter. This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, March 1st, with Ash Wednesday, where ashes are placed upon our foreheads and we are retold, “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” (Gen 3:19).
Lent lasts a total of 46 days (40 weekdays + 6 Sundays) before Easter. Lent recalls the 40 day fast of Jesus in the wilderness after his baptism (Matthew 4:2, Luke 4:1-2) and Moses’ 40 day fast on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:28). Principle themes include Penitence, Baptismal renewal, prayer, fasting, service, and confession of sin that is rooted in the promise of God that comes through the cross of Christ.
During our services, we do not sing the Alleluias. We are offered time to reflect. This part of our liturgical season is meant to be a simpler time of which to ponder and reflect on our lives as Christians and what Christ and the Cross means in our own lives. We do not sing the Alleluia’s during the 40 days because of the repentant character of the season of Lent. This time of personal and congregational contemplation on the quality of our

baptismal faith and life suggests that the joyful nature of Alleluia is more appropriate for our Easter celebrations, when we will give it full and jubilant voice.
For some, Lent is also a time to give up something or abstain from something. Some people pick a food, such as chocolate or sweets. Some people give up soda, caffeine, or late night snaking. For some, it brings them closer to Christ by abstaining from something difficult, reminding us that life in Christ is not always easy, yet it is always worth it. I usually give up something difficult (as much processed sugar as I can), yet I also to try to do something for Lent that maybe I don’t have time for the rest of the year. One year, I spent 20 minutes every night reading the New Testament, and was able to read the whole New Testament within Lent. I know people who do volunteer work every week during Lent, which was not easy with a full time job and a family to care for, but their intentionality was important to this. Someone else I know spent 30 minutes a day in complete silence and prayer. They said that this was difficult at the beginning, but as the days progressed, she looked forward to her time, something that she continues to do to this day.
Lent is a time to look at ourselves and see ourselves in Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. We will read about what Christ has done for others, and what other’s did to Christ during this time, and we can ponder how we fit into that story. Our Wednesday night Lenten services, in which we will worship with Holden’s Evening Prayer, will allow us an opportunity to review those things we have learned regarding our faith, such as the 10 Commandments, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Communion, and Baptism. As we move into Lent, these Catechism lessons many of us learned long ago with help remind us about who we are and whose we are as we travel the road to the cross. They help us to proclaim our faith, follow the Lord in right ways, and be reminded that in our imperfection, Christ is always perfect…perfect in love, forgiveness, and life.
Lent is also a time to allow us to step into the shoes of those who were there, the disciples, Mary, Martha and Lazarus, Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman at the well, the blind man, the Jewish leaders, Pilate, the Roman Guard, the thieves on the cross, Jesus’ mother, to try and better understand what it means for us that Christ died FOR US and for the world, something these characters did not understand while it was happening. We know how the story ends, or at least, the story to this point.
I pray that as you move into Lent, you will keep in mind what Christ means for you in your life and how that life reflects the love that God has for you. May you be blessed in your Lenten journey, knowing that at the end,
and always, you are saved through a love and grace beyond all we could even know, through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, King of the Jews, and I pray that you thank God for that every day.

Our first priority coming from the feedback at the cottage meetings is to develop a 5-year strategic plan. We are looking for a representative cross section of our congregation to get involved. Outreach News
OUTREACH TEAM meets first Sunday of the
month after worship. Anyone with ideas is
encouraged to attend.

Sign up in the narthex to deliver meals to Mike and
Carol Field or talk to Dianne Fett. Four visitor
families since January 1 have had baskets with
homemade bread delivered to their homes. A team
of four is making calls to the 24 member families
absent from church in the past year, to make a
report to Council in March.
CHALLENGE TO GLORIA DEI: How can we be
Salt of the Earth? What more can we do to minister
to our community? Did you see in the paper all the
things Connections Community Church is doing:
visits to local nursing homes, provide meals to local
school staff members, Christmas good will baskets,
etc? We are doing good things too, but what more
can we do and how can we publisize it? We nee to
do more if we want to gain members going forward,
as we discussed at the annual meeting.

NEW TIME FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL
Sunday School has been shortened in order to be
done at 10:20. The shortened lesson time is due
to the new arrangement Gloria Dei has made with
Connections Community Church to be out of the
church by 10:30. So far the condensed class time
seems to work. If there are any issues that com
up we will look at possible new class time
schedules. Please contact David Hoban with any

Seroogy’s Candy Bar Sale Seroogy’s candy bars are on sale now. Proceeds
benefit Vacation Bible Camp. The bars are $1.50
each. You may check out a whole box (48 bars -
$72) or purchase bars individually. The boxes are
already mixed with an assortment of flavors. It
works great to place the boxes in local businesses
or work places. Please turn in money as soon as
possible.

Greetings,
As my first newsletter article, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I have lived in kiel for 12 years, and have two sons, Vincent and Gordon. I have been teaching high school technology classes for the past 16 years and enjoy working with youth. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve on church council, and look forward to working with everyone to strengthen our congregation. In the coming months there will be many topics addressed, but I would like to mention one in particular. Since our new tenant CCC has had their services at 11, our Sunday school program has experienced some difficulties. To address these concerns, please consider attending the next council meeting where we will work on a solution.

Cookies for College Kids
It’s that time again…time to start
planning the spring shipment of
Cookies for College Kids.
First of all, I NEED
NAMES and
ADDRESSES of
congregation college
kids. I have my list from the
fall semester, and I've deleted those that I know are not in
college this semester. I will have my list on the table in the
Narthex. Please check names and addresses to make sure
they are up-to-date and add any names and addresses that
you do not see on there. Next, if you are willing to bake
or contribute other treats like individually wrapped candy,
there is a sign-up sheet in the narthex for that too. For
anyone who would like to help, we will be packing the
boxes on Saturday, March 25th at 8:00am. If you’re not
a baker, you can still help with a monetary donation that
would defray the cost of shipping the packages (about
$8.50 each). If you have any other questions, just ask!

During Lent, you are invited to

cereal to church so that we can
donate it to the New Holstein
Christian Center’s food pantry.
One of the things that the pantry
goes through a lot of is cereal.
Did you know that a large family
can finish one box of cereal in
one breakfast?
We will be collecting boxed or
bagged cereal from Ash Wednesday (March 1) through Palm
Sunday (April 9).
We will be taking the cereal to the New Holstein Christian
Center during Holy Week. Please help us feed others during
Lent, grateful in knowing that we have enough and can help
others.

Mutual Ministry Team Report
2016
In this season of giving; giving praise, giving thanks,
and giving gifts, the Mutual Ministry Team would like
to acknowledge some of the many “gifts” that have
been generously generated here at Gloria Dei over
the last four months. Many members have shared
their gifts of time, talent, and financial giving.
So THANK YOU to:
• The council and Dick Welsch for all their labors at working on a long range plan for Gloria Dei.
• The Outreach Team for working to stay in touch with members, providing meals to families when needed, and contacting visitors to let them know we’ve noticed their presence.
• The men and women who gave their time at the Kiel Fireman’s Brat Fry.
• The men and women who gave their time to the food booth at Road America.
• To the Sunday School for collecting food goods and warm clothes for homeless children.
• The kids who collect the noisy offering that will fund VBS.
• Those who volunteer to keep our church clean and do necessary repairs and tasks.
• The women who worked with such enthusiasm on Chrismons for Christmas.
• All who donated to the air conditioning fund.
• Those who donated to fill a freezer for the Packer Bash.
• All those who baked cookies for college kids.
• All of you that are currently donating bath and cleaning supplies for the women’s shelter.
• Then there is Script, those who volunteer for Sunday morning service, and so on.
We are sure there are more, so thanks to those we might have missed.

We are revamping the Gloria Dei web site
(www.gloriadeilc.com) and adding a lot more

so far. The goal is display all that Gloria Dei is
and does. It is great way to show prospective
members what Gloria Dei is all about. This in-
cludes the activities that we do such as dinner
theater, empty bowls, rummage sale, highway
clean up, God’s Work Our Hands, etc.) There
will also be more information added regarding
our growing in faith activities such as Sunday
School, confirmation class, Tuesday morning Bi-
ble study, adult education hour, youth group,

Call to Order: President Louie Kolberg called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.

Approval of Minutes (January 16, 2017): Jerry motioned to approve minutes, Gary seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: Tammy also provided an aging summary. We are currently behind on payments with Frontier Communications, Mission Investment Fund, Ross Imaging LLC, and Big Joe’s Maintenance.
Pastor’s Report: From January 16 to present, Pastor’s schedule consisted of: First Call meeting, Ecumenical meeting, Synod meeting, Cluster meeting, prayer time at New Holstein Christian Store, Green Bay Conference Annual meeting, Gloria Dei Annual meeting, Worship meeting, meeting with Pastor Dave from Connections Community Church, Clergywomen’s meeting, youth group event, and vacation days.
Ongoing – Office hours, weekly Bible study, Wednesday confirmation class, Wednesday/Sunday worship services/prior preparation, events with the Green Bay Conference and Ecumenical Group, and Connections Community Church setup.
Conversation is beginning regarding worship services for Lent.
Pastor Traci will be on vacation from February 21-22. No worship services will be missed, and no meetings had been scheduled for those days.
President’s Report: Louie thanked the outgoing council members for their service. Current and incoming council members were also thanked for their continuing work.
Old Business:
1. Strategic Planning Update: Louie- A team has been created, led by Louie Kohlberg, consisting of Dick Welch, Jerry Jensen (as council liason), Cheryl and Craig Heller, Dave Hoban, and Karen Ebert. Please talk to Louie with additional recommendations for team members. The team will meet with Rev. Jean Devoll-Donaldson to begin work on the strategic plan.
2. Mortgage Adjustment- Mission Investment: Jerry- A letter was received from Mission Investment, outlining the assistance they are willing to provide, as well as the conditions.

Mission Investment will lower current mortgage payments to $2000 (down from $2559) from January 2017 to June 2017

Conduct a vitality survey Discussion: Is this worth it? It seems like a lot of work for little reward. However, many of the items on the list of

see that the church is trying. Capital campaign: when people give money toward the campaign, is there a reflective
reduction in general giving? This will have to be brought up and impressed upon the congregation.
Jerry motioned to accept the terms set forth by Mission Investment. Annette seconded. Motion carried.
3. Volunteer Manual for action teams: This was started last year, worship and education have been finished. Barb Spiegel has a master copy. Pick this back up, beginning with property team.

Council retreat: Louie offered the use of the Brillion Nature Center again. Pastor will send dates out to council members.
Relationship/Contract with CCC: Connections Community Church is very happy and appreciative of their 11am time. We currently have a three-month contract with them, and they are willing to sign a six-month contract.
Sunday School changes: There has been a lot of talk about the current Sunday School time (10:00am-10:20am). In general, people are unhappy with the setup and shortened time. Options were discussed, such as having Sunday school during service time, starting Sunday school at 8:30, and having Sunday school on Wednedays, at the same time as confirmation (5:30pm-6:30pm). Charlotte will contact Dave Hoban, head of the education team, and invite him to the next council meeting to discuss this topic further. Charlotte will also request Dave to email parents of Sunday school students, and invite them to the council meeting as well.
