Globalisation has improved the ability to conduct business
across the globe because of improved technology in
particular communication. The internet and ability to travel
quickly all over the world means that national borders are
no longer barriers to moving foods, services or information
( or diseases).
Globalisation
Tobacco use (smoking and chewing) What is the positive impact of globalisation
on tobacco use?Scientific studies and research have
increased knowledge of tobacco affecting legislation and increasing the political pressure placed on tobacco companies
Smoking rates have reduced as a result of anti- tobacco legislation and health education but not in developing countries
What is the negative impact of globalisation on tobacco use?
Tobacco companies are moving into developing countries – this has lead to an increase in tobacco related deaths and diseases – lung cancer, mouth cancer, heart disease and respiratory diseases
Lack of medical facilities available to prevent these deaths and diseases
Health education limited so people don’t learn about how tobacco affects health
Governments in developing countries have no legislation against tobacco use and in some cultures, chewing tobacco is promoted as part of the culture
What is the positive impact of globalisation on alcohol use?
Health education about the affects of alcohol is spreading globally to countries that have access to schools and education
Legislation preventing underage drinking and showing alcohol levels in drinks is being introduced world wide
Results on alcohol research are being provided across the world
What are the negative affects of globalisation on alcohol use?
Increased use of alcohol in countries such as Africa because alcohol manufacturers can import and make alcohol cheaply in these countries by using cheap labour
No legislation about alcohol use has been formed in developing countries – underage drinking etc occurs
Developing countries do not have access to education about the bad affects of health from alcohol
