I would like to thank our families who supported our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser, as well as our Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraiser. With your support, we have been able to raise funds for our school-wide field trip, as well as extra items needed for our playground. I would also like to thank those families who came out to enjoy our Family Fun night to play math games and eat pizza with their children. It was fun had by all!April was a busy month! Around the World in 5K (Run/Walk)…Health, Fitness, & Safety April was a busy month! Here are some of the highlights!

Our students had the opportunity again this semester to work with SVSU students in the education program in the areas of math and science. Our first graders continue with their community partnership lessons from the 4H group. Our third-fifth grade students traveled to SVSU for their International Festival. Our 8th

graders had an opportunity to be “9th Graders for a Day” at AHHS; they also had a chance to get up close and personal with WNEM-TV 5 employees and the producer.

April ended with receiving GREAT news…our new wing has passed inspection from the State Fire Marshall! We will be able to open it very soon! Please watch for more information about an upcoming Open House.This school year has gone by so quickly, and it is hard to believe that we have only six weeks left. We will end our year with many events, including a school-wide field trip to Dow Diamond for School Days at the Loon’s; a Health, Fitness, and Safety Day which includes a 5KRun/Walk event on Friday June 3rd,. Put on your walking/running shoes! We would like to invite our parents to come walk/run with your children! We will have fun and fitness activities for all, as well as many educational booths.

We will end the year with a ZISS Community Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, June 8th, sponsored by the Zilwaukee PTCC I want to take this opportunity to thank you for…your continued trust and support for our school!, your commitment to your child’s education, your smiling faces, and most of all…sharing with us the hope for our future -your children! “Oh no ~ look what the leprechaun did to Mrs. Sestak’s classroom!”

That silly leprechaun has struck again! Since 2008, the leprechaun has made a surprising visit to Mrs. Sestak’s classroom. Whenever we get a visit from the leprechaun, he/she always ends

when they saw papers all over the floor and tiny green footprints that lead to and OUT of the window. Where did the leprechaun go after making this HUGE mess? Did he/she go back to the end of the rainbow? Did he/she go to another classroom and make a mess in there? Did he/she go to another school or go home? Since we do

And what a mess it is � The leprechaun thinks it is funny to throw papers all over the classroom, turn over chairs, dump manipulatives onto the tables, and leave tiny green footprints all over the place (on the floor, chairs, tables, lockers, chalkboard, etc.). Well, Mrs. Sestak is fed up with the leprechaun and the mess that is always left behind. As soon as the Hearing Impaired students finished breakfast and were walking to their class, they quickly noticed tiny green footprints on their lockers and on the floor leading into the room. But, walking into the classroom was a whole different story. They couldn’t believe their eyes.

When she noticed the footprints and the mess that was left behind; she ended up taking pictures as evidence and contacted Officer Shirt to document what just happened. As soon as Officer Shirt gathered our statements and pictures have been taken, it was a team effort to clean up our classroom. Each of us took turns to pick up the papers, wash off the footprints, and pick up the chairs to place them back where they belong (at our desks). Let’s just say that we were NOT happy to see what the leprechaun left behind � But, it was ALL smiles in the end ☺ Working together and having the opportunity to express our thoughts through drawings & writings ended up being more of a positive experience than a negative one.

My Field Trip to the International FestivalBy: Marrissa Sanders3rd Grade

When I went to the International Festival at SVSU there were 13 different countries there. Kenya, which is my International Address, was even there. I tried foods from other countries. I also did Henna. Henna is a kind of paint that you put on your skin that stays on for a couple weeks. It was so cool! At one table you could do Origami. I made a bird and a swan. It was so fun!

My favorite part of the festival was the face painting. I like face painting because I love having paint on my face. At the Kenya booth the SVSU student from Kenya tested us to see what we knew about Kenya before she would paint our face. I got the answers right but I already had paint on my face and hands so I couldn’t have anything else painted on. The International Festival at SVSU has been my favorite field trip this year.

International Studies School went to the International Festival at Saginaw Valley State University. We saw so many different things like golden coins from China, jewelry from different countries, and various foods from France. I even got to taste some foods. They were yummy. There were beautiful clothes with awesome designs. It was just outstanding! We also heard music from different countries and I also learned Chinese.

My favorite part of the festival was when I got my face painted with a black, yellow, and red flag. I even got the Eiffel Tower pined on my arm. I would love to go to the festival again sometime.

Mr. LeRoux’s kindergarten class welcomed two very special guests from Saginaw Valley State University. Mrs. Katie Condon and Miss Kelsey Sharrow spent valuable days in the classroom over a six-week period, focusing on math and science activities. In math, the guest teachers helped us learn about the numbers from 0-30 and the quantities they represent. We were introduced to the skill of estimating and had a great time with a game called “The Monster Squeeze”. Mrs. Katie and Miss Kelsey made a number line from 0-30 and we had to guess the hidden number by asking if it was “more than” or “less than” a number on the chart. The “monsters’ on each end of the number line would move in or “squeeze” as we came closer to the right answer. We also worked on fun learning centers such as number matching, numbers of a set to 30, number memory, and predicting cubes in a jar. We even made our very own number value books with stickers and could take them home when we were finished.In science, we learned about force and what it means to push or pull objects.

Our guest teachers brought in a stroller, a basketball, and a box to help demonstrate ways to push and pull objects. They taught us that we even push and pull objects everyday we are in school. We guessed that the objects were our chairs and doors and we were right. Also, we read information books about force, motion, and gravity that had really cool pictures. During the gravity lesson, we made parachutes with plastic bags and clothespins. It was so much fun, but it did not stop there. We even made paper airplanes and practiced flying them using our own “force” to make them move. Science is so much fun!We learned so many wonderful math and science skills from Mrs. Katie and Miss Kelsey. They put in so much time, effort and dedication into our classroom. We were so happy and thankful that they were able to work and learn with us on their visits. Everyone involved enjoyed the experiences and we look forward to our future possibilities.We are very fortunate to have extra learning opportunities with our friends from SVSU.

As we in Michigan know, the weather can change in an instant! Please make sure that your child dresses appropriately when coming to school. Recently the eighth graders had the opportunity to learn about careers in broadcasting during a field trip to local television station WNEM-TV 5. Students were treated to a complete tour and informative talk by producer, Carrie Widenmier. Our tour began on the news and weather set learning how cameras, teleprompters, computers, and green screens are operated during a newscast. Several students took turns hamming it up in

wnem.com website with stories and content, and we had the special chance to talk with morning news anchor, Amy Andrews. The class was divided into two groups. The groups took turns listening to presentations by Andrews and new meteorologist, Catherine Bodak about their career choice, their job responsibilities, and their educational experiences leading to their current positions at WNEM-TV 5.

Our final experience was extremely special. We were all allowed to watch the noon hour news cast live as it was being broadcasted. Half of the class witnessed the show being directed in the direction booth, while the other half stood off to the side down on the news and weather set, silently watching and listening to Amy Andrews and Catherine Bodak do their jobs live “on air”. The 4th grade students are learning about Japan. The whole Zilwaukee School helped the 4th grade class make cranes. The cranes then get sent to an organization. They send it to Japan and each crane sent out is $2.00 for Japan. The 4th grade class reached 400 cranes. We're making them because Japan had an earthquake. Another reason is that the cranes will remind them to get the money for them to rebuild their homes. LET'S HELP JAPAN!
