Global Gateway Program
The following courses are available in the 2-term Global Gateway Program:
Academic Communication Skills I and II Content-based approach to using spoken and written English effectively for academic purposes, including strategies for reading, critical thinking skills, and abundant classroom opportunities to build language proficiency and acquire cultural knowledge successfully. (4 academic credits per course, 8 academic credits total)
Academic Writing I and II Focused attention on developing successful strategies for college-level writing, including familiarization with appropriate style and sentence structure, citation guidelines, and analyzing cultural differences in writing. (4 academic credits per course, 8 academic credits total)
U.S. Academic Culture This course is designed to enhance language/cultural skills and academic success through an exploration of college life in the U.S., including ideas that inspire American education, student experiences and responsibilities, campus resources, and effective learning strategies. (3 academic credits)
Introduction to Global Studies Addresses the social, political, economic, natural, and cultural dimensions of globalization in the world today. Includes targeted attention to strategies for success in academic coursework at the university. (3 academic credits)
Mathematics elective Math course, as determined by placement test. (3-4 academic credits)
Additional academic elective Courses in math, statistics, chemistry, or computer science, dependent on the chosen degree program (3-4 academic credits).
During the 3-term Global Gateway Program, students will have one term of intensive English language study prior to the academic coursework in the 2-term program. Regardless of where you start, you’ll be taught by University of Vermont faculty, taking academic courses with other GGP students and selected elective courses with American students.
After gaining 28-30 academic credits (the equivalent of Year 1 of a Bachelor’s degree), students can enroll in one of over 100 degree programs offered by the following academic areas within the University of Vermont:

Discover a world of differenceTo help international students improve their English language skills and adapt to university life, we created the Global Gateway Program (GGP). The GGP provides dedicated support to help students succeed as undergraduates at UVM.
Do more, achieve more GGP students receive English language support and take courses led by the distinguished UVM faculty. They are provided with the academic tools, supportive learning environment, and the course credits to advance to Year 2 of a bachelor’s degree.

On-site testing upon arrival will confirm English level and verify final placement. Students must successfully complete the entire 2 or 3 consecutive terms of the Global Gateway Program with a minimum 2.5 GPA to matriculate into Year 2 of a UVM degree program.

The Global Gateway Advantage
What does it mean to be a Global Gateway student?It means we will welcome you to our community and support your academic pursuits the day you arrive on campus. The following are answers to frequently asked questions for students looking to apply to the Global Gateway Program.
Do I study English language? Yes. Depending on your language level, you may take the 2- or 3-semester Global Gateway Program at the International Study Center (ISC).
Do I study academic courses? You take specialized academic courses that fulfill the university’s general education requirements and fully prepare you to enter your degree program.
Do I take classes with American students? During the GGP, you will take your elective math or science courses with American students.
Do I get academic credit for my degree? You will take credit-bearing courses in the GGP. Credits vary by course.
Do I get extra academic support and learn study skills? The International Study Center at the University of Vermont provides additional support to help you succeed academically.
Do I get extra personal help to adjust to living in America? The GGP and ISC staff will support you to ensure you adapt to being an active member of the student community and living in America.
After the GGP, do I continue into the second year of my degree program? Upon successful completion of the GGP, you will move into the second year of your degree program.
Will I graduate after 4 years? Students who successfully complete the academic coursework of the GGP and their degree program may graduate after 4 years.
Do I lose time in the GGP? You do not lose time during the GGP. You can still graduate in 4 years, similar to direct entry students.
Is there an application fee? There is no application fee for the GGP application.
Do I get a university issued I-20? The University of Vermont issues the I-20 and will work with you to renew your I-20 after the GGP.
Do I need to submit letters of recommendation to apply? Letters of recommendation are not required for Global Gateway applicants.
Am I taught by university faculty? The GGP is taught entirely by esteemed University of Vermont faculty.
Will I get an admissions decision in a timely manner? GGP applications are promptly reviewed.

Academic supportDedicated, individualized resourcesOur student services provide academic support outside of classroom hours, which means all our undergraduates receive the necessary help to achieve their educational objectives.
ACADEMIC ADVISORSEach of the seven schools and colleges on campus has its own student services department. Every undergraduate will be assigned an academic advisor. These faculty members work with students to ensure they attain their academic goals, and that they are in line with the graduation requirements of the university.
THE LEARNING COOPERATIVEThe Learning Cooperative offers students subject area tutoring for all academic courses. Free of charge to all undergraduates, the service is delivered by students with an outstanding academic record in their chosen course.

Classic facilitiesThe University of Vermont is committed to providing students with a superior educational experience. To achieve this, we offer state-of-the-art facilities.
COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATIONSAll our undergraduate students are required to live on campus for the first two years of their study. As a Global Gateway Program student, you will be living in the Marsh Austin Tupper housing complex. It is located in the heart of the student community and is home to the Global Gateway Program support services. While staying at Marsh Austin Tupper, you will also have many other facilities close by.
SAFETY ON CAMPUSScattered throughout the campus are either wall-mounted or free-standing blue light units that provide instant two-way communications with the police dispatcher. A blue light identifies their location and a clear strobe flashes when the unit is activated.
