How was the fraud detected?

Global Economic Crime & Fraud Survey – February 2018 8

• Corporate controls are the largest contributor to detection of respondents indicating that the most disruptive fraud was initially detected by this method.

• However, more than ¼ of the fraud is detected through tip-offs or hotlines - a trend that is likely to continue to grow, given increased attention for whistle-blowing hotlines.

External actors

In Belgium there are much more external actors than internal, due to more cybercrime and more developed internal control frameworks.

Cybercrime: Belgium’s number one threat And most disruptive, now and in the future

15

The most common economic crime in Belgium:

Which kind of crime was the most disruptive?

• Cybercrime: 38%

• Fraud committed by the consumer: 18%

• Asset misappropriation: 10%

of the Belgian respondents believe that cybercrime will continue to be the most

disruptive in the next 24 months outperforming other types of crime.

Cybercrime techniques

With cyber-attack as the leading crime in terms of number of incidents reported in this study, we also noticed that the most ‘popular’ techniques of cybercriminals are:

• Phishing: 66%

• Malware: 56%

• Network scanning: 16%

Consequences of cybercrime in Belgium

• 31% of cybercrime attacks caused disruption in business processes

• In 28% of the cases assets were misappropriated

• Intellectual property theft only reported by 2%

• 20% of the Belgian respondents indicated that they don’t know what the exact consequences are. So in many cases, companies might not know if there were serious consequences, which is alarming because there might have been data loss or IP theft!

Cyber risk assessments

• As already indicated, there’s more attention for assessing the company’s cyber attack vulnerability (61%).

• 66% of the Belgian respondents worked on Cyber Security Programmes the last 24 months. Cyber Security Programmes were installed by 55% of respondents, up from 37% in 2016.

• 11% of the companies have a plan that is not fully implemented or operational.

• It’s worrying that the companies don’t seem to assess the quality of their cyber response plan: only 35% of the Belgian companies indicated they performed an assessment on their plan.

Global Economic Crime & Fraud Survey – February 2018 18

This increased attention is a good result, but there’s still room for improvement!
