ISSUE 1 TERM 1 6 February 2013

A very warm 2013 welcome to every member of the Glenwood High School community and particularly to our new students and parents. Time and again Glenwood High School has proven it is a dynamic secondary school which strives to ignite passion for learning. Students are thoroughly supported as they develop the ability to manage their future, their talents, their emotions and their character. Our children enjoy coming to Glenwood High School every day and that was most evident in the happy, smiling faces staff encountered last week as we all returned to school. We are proud of the calibre of student at Glenwood and the depth and breadth of academic, artistic, creative and sporting talent across the student body. In short, they are wonderful human beings and deserve the very best education and with a focus on continual improvement Glenwood High School will provide such an education.

Outstanding HSC Success

The 2012 HSC results were cause for much celebration at the end of last year. The school community were extremely proud of the many students who achieved high results due to their dedication and hard work. The teaching staff at Glenwood High School are amongst the best I have ever worked with and thoroughly prepare students for the HSC examinations and the future ahead. Many of our students gained University entry and are very happy with the tertiary courses they have been able to access. All teachers have been analysing the data from the HSC results and it is evident there is a much higher percentage of students adding value to their education at Glenwood than those who do not.

HSC Highlights include:

16 students achieved an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) over 90 with Azrah Samsudeen achieving the highest score of 97.75, Ashleigh Hayden with 97.45 and Mark Moharib on 97.0.

Updated Anaphylaxis Care for Undiagnosed Children The Department of Education and Communities has recently announced that all government schools will receive a general use adrenaline autoinjector (an EpiPen) for their first aid kit. This does not replace the need for parents to continue to provide the school with an adrenaline autoinjector and ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis signed and dated by their doctor when their child has been diagnosed with anaphylaxis. Instead the general use adrenaline autoinjector is intended to be used if:

o An undiagnosed student has an anaphylactic reaction at school o There is a misfire of the adrenaline autoinjector that has been prescribed for a student o A student requires further adrenaline autoinjector to be administered after his or her own adrenaline autoinjector has been administered.

Please contact the school if you would like further information in relation to this matter.

Changes to the DER Laptop Program As many of you are aware the Digital Education Revolution - Laptop Program funded by the Federal Government is in its final year. In this last year the government has given schools the choice of allocating the laptops to individual students in Year 9 or keeping them as school property for more students to access.

Page 3: GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL...Tuesday 26th February, 2013 - Year 12 Parent Teacher afternoon—3.30pm (further information to be provided) Tuesday 26th February, 2013 -Telephone: 9629 9577

After the consultation of staff and the P&C it has been unanimously decided that the school should keep the laptops as a resource for students in Year 7 – 9 with class sets available to all classes throughout the school day.

This will alleviate the issue of students having to remember to bring their laptops fully charged for each day and also, means they no longer need to carry them to and from school. As following year groups will no longer by funded with their own personal laptops the school community felt it was more equitable to keep them as a whole school resource so every school student for a number of years to come could have access to this wonderful resource. Although the changed policy is still in draft form, the school has guaranteed Year 9 will always have first priority in the use of the laptops in the classrooms.

NAPLAN – Year 7 & 9 As many of you are aware the nationwide NAPLAN assessment takes place in May every year. We shall be spending time preparing Year 7 & 9 for this assessment. The written component will be a persuasive / exposition text this year. Towards the end of this term each faculty will focus on ensuring all Year 7 & 9 students understand the structure of a persuasive / exposition text and have had an opportunity to practise the writing of such a text. We ask parents and carers to please reinforce the importance of mastering this skill as successful writing will support student learning far beyond school.

THANK YOU PARENTS / CARERS A special thank you to all parents and carers for ensuring their children were in the correct uniform for the start of the school year. The students were particularly proud of their appearance in their brand new hard leather shoes and immaculate uniform on the first day. They made all staff members extremely proud of them as well. Till next time Erla McMaster Principal

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” (Dr. Seuss)

Welcome Back!! It has been a wonderful start to the year. Our students have returned looking bright and eager to return to their studies. They are to be commended on their attitude, application, uniform, impeccable grooming and manners. Congratulations parents for your hard work in ensuring that all members of our learning community, our students, your children, are ready for learning, respectful and responsible. We look forward to a new year of experiences, achievement and personal excellence in everything we do. Diaries Our focus in Term 1 is to get organised. A school diary is the most useful tool to help students stay up-to-date, keep track of homework and assignments and keep tabs on school events. Diaries tailored to Glenwood High School are available from student reception for $11. They contain a wealth of information about the school, its policies and procedures as well as study tips. An excellent purchase. Uniform At Glenwood High School, wearing the uniform correctly is important. It reflects students’ attitude to themselves, their learning and school in general. It visually indicates that they are proud of themselves and their school and that they are ready for learning.

Full details of our uniform policy are available on the website at:

http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/uniform-policy

Please pay particular attention to the information on shoes as the policy is very specific in order to satisfy WHS requirements. Particularly useful are the images of acceptable and unacceptable footwear. Please consult these before purchasing new footwear.

If there are exceptional circumstances that prevents a student from wearing the correct uniform items, they must provide a note of explanation to their connect teacher if it is only for one day. If it is for longer, then they must provide their note to the relevant Deputy Principal for approval. We stress that these circumstances must be exceptional and one-off, otherwise, they may be required to borrow laundered items from the second-hand clothing pool for the day.

Assessment Booklets Years 10 and 11 were issued with their formal assessment booklets at their first meeting of the term. These booklets contain useful information on both the school’s policies and procedures, as well as those of the NSW Board of Studies.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

Facebook: Glenwood High School NSW

Booklet contents include: individual subject assessment schedules, including estimated due dates NSW Board of Studies rules and requirements school assessment procedures processes, such as applying for misadventure, for example if a task is late or missed other relevant documentation a planner

These documents have been posted on the school’s website and can be downloaded as a pdf file. Parents were also emailed the link, which was also posted on facebook. To receive relevant emails such as this, please ensure that you provide your current email address to the school office. The Year 9 Assessment Booklet will be available at the next year meeting. Just a few reminders: Banned Items

There are a number of banned items which must not be brought to school under any circumstances for various reasons. Some are obvious, some are not. Just as a reminder, these are:

illegal items - including weapons and drugs water pistols replica pistols cigarettes lighters and matches energy drinks gum liquid paper aerosol cans skateboards scooters laser lights and laser pointers metal rulers

Please be aware that the consequences for gum have changed. If students chose to ignore the school rule banning gum, then they will be required to complete community service during either recess or lunch. This will involve scraping gum either from the tables and chairs in the classrooms, or from the concrete in the playground. Please bear in mind that we are trying to keep the learning environment at Glenwood High School an enjoyable one. Students are asked to avoid the temptation posed by gum by not bringing it. Mobile Phones

Mobile phones must be off and out of sight once students are at school. Mobile phones may not used during the day.

If parents need to contact their child during the day, please do so by contacting school reception. Our office staff will ensure that the message gets through.

The school wishes to inform all parents/carers that from Monday 11th February, 2013 the exact cash is required when paying for excursions and accounts. In the past, the giving and collection of change for such payments has caused undue stress and confusion for both staff and students. The school is most happy to accept payment by cheque or credit card for all expenses.

Eftpos Facility

Due to the financial cost of the use of the Eftpos facility the policy of a $10.00 minimum charge will remain.

Back to School Adjustments

Whilst the facebook photos of your friends’ children may indicate otherwise, the transition back to school can involve lots of adjustments and challenges for both children and parents. Whilst change is a constant, we are all creatures of habit and adjusting to change can be quite stressful and also result in concerning behaviours, which if unaddressed, can become more problematic.

Some of the adjustment related behaviours and concerns that parents and carers have rung Parent Line for information, advice and support with, include the following:

Distress about and/or refusal to attend school

Sleep issues and concerns

Increased anger and irritability

Temper tantrums

Homework and study issues

Friendship and playground issues and concerns

Behavioural concerns at school

Of course, problems are not usually confined to the children in the family and frequently the stress and anxiety involved in dealing with one unhappy family member impacts on everyone.

The following strategies have been compiled by the Parent Line Counselling team, to help families in adjusting to change and managing some of the challenges associated with difficult transition periods.

Try to attend to the basics first, like sleep, nutrition, exercise and relaxation.

Try to have realistic expectations about this period and to prepare for possible challenges associated with adjusting to change, new routines, expectations etc. This might mean cutting children a bit of slack initially as they come home from school exhausted and cranky, making sure

they get time for refreshments and replenishment once home, before engaging in after-school activities etc.

Check in regularly with your kids and keep the lines of communication open with them. Acknowledge and normalise that transitions are hard and that it takes time to get used to new routines etc. Share funny stories of your own struggles with change.

Try to establish a school/work/home balance, with plenty of opportunities for ‘down time’. For example, not taking on too many commitments and after school activities at once. One activity per child is often quite sufficient, so both children and parents may therefore have to prioritise interests.

Implement a homework routine, have a designated time and space for homework, as well as opportunities for children to seek parental assistance and support with homework.

Develop clear expectations about family responsibilities/chores, reward systems (e.g. pocket money) and consequences for non-completion.

Be gentle with yourself and monitor your own stress levels. Try to take regular ‘time out’ even if it’s a few minutes here and there for deep breathing, a cup of tea, walk etc

Repair relationships when there are ruptures. We are only human and all parents will ‘lose it’ on occasion under stress. It’s good modelling for children when we can take responsibility and apologise for mistakes.

Seek support and assistance with challenges. Stress can isolate us and cause us to withdraw when what we really need is to reach out.

Parent Line counsellors are on call 24/7 to discuss any issues that relate to your family, there is also information on our website www.parentline.org.au.
