We hope you like the look and scope of our new 2015-2016 Calendar of Events.

You will notice that it is a comprehensive look at our season, from August to May.

You’ll also notice that is has much more information and notably quite a bit more

visual “pop.” I want to thank our PR/Marketing team, led by Brian Reetz, for

developing this new format with such daring and vision.

I’m pleased to confirm that we will be continuing our new adventure in webcasting

many of our performances, thanks in large measure to our able and willing

partners at Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET). These colleagues

have been so joyous and encouraging throughout the launch of this initiative last

year, bringing vital experience and wisdom to this experiment in outreach and

engagement.

We in the Glenn Korff School of Music remain deeply committed to guiding

and challenging our students to reach their potential, whatever their dance or

music passions might be. Our faculty is made up of so many impressive and

internationally celebrated artists and scholars. They appear routinely around

the world at important conferences and on prestigious world stages, but most

importantly our faculty is deeply committed to our students.

The year ahead will be another adventure in advancing our tripartite mission.

commitment of the Glenn Korff School of Music to teacher education

infuses a fundamental commitment to the teaching of comprehensive

musicianship into all aspects of the curriculum. The School provides

opportunities to understand, participate in, and enjoy music and dance.

It has a responsibility for fulfilling this mission, not only for the citizens

of Nebraska, but also for its constituency regionally, nationally, and

Glenn Korff was born on May 29,

1943, the son of Paul W. and Esther

L. Korff. He was raised in Hebron,

Nebraska and graduated from Hebron High

School in 1961.

Korff attended the University of Nebraska

graduating in 1965. He earned a Bachelor

of Science degree in the College of Arts and

Sciences with a double major in Chemistry

and Zoology and a minor in Economics. A

highlight for Korff was his selection to become a member of the Innocent’s

Society, founded in 1903 as a senior men’s service honorary for outstanding

achievement at the University of Nebraska.

After graduation, Korff spent one year at the University of Nebraska College of

Medicine doing graduate work in the medical sciences. He then attended the

University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance, where he graduated in

1968 with a Masters of Business Administration being on the Director’s Honor

List.

He joined the United States Army Reserve in 1967 and was honorably

discharged in 1973. Upon completion of his active duty, he was cited as a

Military Honor Graduate.

Upon his graduation from the Wharton School of Finance in Philadelphia, he

journeyed to New York City to work in a sales position in the corporate and

government bond department for Salomon Brothers, investment bankers

and bond dealers, from 1969 to 1974. From 1974 until 1992 he worked for

Goldman Sachs, international investment bankers, in New York City. He was

named a Vice-President Executive Director of Goldman Sachs in 1976 and was

manager of the New York Corporate and Government Bond Sales Group from

1976 to 1987. From 1987 until 1992, Korff headed the Goldman Sachs Fixed

Income Compliance Department with worldwide responsibilities.

Since 1992, Korff was semi-retired managing Korff Holdings, a personal

investment company. He served as a Trustee of the University of Nebraska

Foundation and as a member of the David Brainerd Perry Society and the

President’s Club at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He is listed as a

member of the Dean’s Club and a Founder of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine

& Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska and has been honored as a

donor of distinction at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

At the time of his death in 2013, Korff resided in Boulder, Colorado. He enjoyed

his investing activities, photography, hiking, and college sports.

Join the Chiara Quartet, Hixson-Lied Artists-in-Residence at the UNL Glenn

Korff School of Music, as they celebrate 10 years of performing in Lincoln

throughout the 2015-2016 season. This year’s Hixson-Lied Concert Series

will feature old favorites, new discoveries, and exciting collaborations with fellow

members of the GKSOM faculty. Each concert features a themed journey through

the heart of string quartet music. You won’t want to miss a single performance!

Since releasing their recording of the three Brahms quartets without using sheet

music in 2014, the Chiara Quartet has been bringing this concert experience to

audiences throughout the world.

CONCERT II (Oct 23, 2015): A Chiara Soirée Arthur Foote, A Night Piece and Scherzo for flute and string quartet (with John Bailey, flute); Ernst von Dohnányi, Serenade in C Major for String Trio; Brahms,

Piano Quintet in F minor, Op 34 (with Mark Clinton, piano)

Join the Chiara with guests John Bailey (flute) and Mark Clinton (piano) as they

play a delicious program of late-romantic treats, including a rare string trio

performance of the Dohnányi Serenade with members of the Chiara.

CONCERT III (Jan 29, 2016): The Adolf Busch Legacy Adolf Busch, Quintet for Saxophone and String Quartet (with Paul Haar,

saxophone); Beethoven, String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127

Violinist Adolf Busch left his native Germany when Hitler rose to power, and

emigrated to the U.S. in protest on the eve of World War II, bringing his quartet--

the Busch Quartet--with him. Settling in Vermont, he founded the Marlboro Music

Festival with his piano collaborator, Rudolph Serkin. The Busch Quartet was the

is dedicated to the performance

of original repertoire works and

new music for brass quintet.

Recent concerts have featured

works by Eric Ewazen, Jan Bach,

Witold Lutoslawski, Juraj Filas, Rayner Brown, Anthony Plog, Desire Dondeyne,

Ingolf Dahl and Michael Kamen, Andre Previn, William Schuman, Eugene Bozza,

Henri Sauguet and Arthur Harris. The quintet has been active in commissioning

new works with a Concerto Grosso by Juraj Filas and a new quintet by Bruce

Broughton to be premiered in Spring 2014. The quintet has performed on

the Omaha Chamber Music Society Series, the Meadowlark Festival, The

International Brass Chamber Music Festival and have toured extensively

throughout the United States and Europe.

CONCERT IV (Mar 7, 2016): A Bartók Premiere! Gabriela Lena Frank, Canciones Populares for string quartet; Gabriela Lena Frank, Bartók piano transcriptions for string quartet (world premiere); collaborative piece TBA (featuring the winner of the Play with the Chiaras

competition)

This evening features the premiere of new arrangements of some of Bartók’s

piano works, arranged for string quartet by Gabriela Lena Frank. Ms. Frank was

influenced in her own writing by Bartók’s approach to using folk materials as a

rich source of inspiration, on full display in her colorful Canciones Populares. The

Chiara Quartet will also perform alongside the winner of the 2016 Play with the

Chiaras Audition, for an exciting ending to this 10th Anniversary Season!

their appearance on the NET Television and Glenn Korff School of Music

program Jazz Cabaret, which has been viewed by millions. The program captured the

versatility and creativity audiences have come to expect from the group. From unique

arrangements of jazz and popular standards, to original works the UNL Faculty Jazz

Ensemble present a varied and exciting program. Active as clinicians and educators

the group brings its “Mobile Jazz Classroom” to schools throughout the midwest.

One of the most active and visible quintets in the Midwest, the Moran

Woodwind Quintet is the resident faculty woodwind quintet of the

Glenn Korff School of Music. Formed in 1986 and named for the

late John Moran, Director of the UNL School of Music, the Quintet has toured

extensively, including performances in Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, Colorado,

Oklahoma, Illinois, South Dakota, Arkansas and Texas. They have also performed

at conventions of the College Music Society, the International Double Reed

Society and the International Horn Society. The Quintet has recorded three CD’s

for Crystal Records, including two CDs featuring music of the early 20th-century

German composer Theodor Blumer and one with American woodwind quintets

(music of Heiden, Higdon, Murdock and Lieuwen). The Quintet has also recorded

on the Coronet label.

UNL Opera and Musical Theatre

UNL Opera and Musical Theatre share a

mission to educate graduate and undergraduate

students in the art of music theatre by

providing high quality training and meaningful

performance experience. Season auditions

are open to all voice students at all levels of

interest. Performers range from freshman music

education majors working toward jobs in the

public schools to graduate performance majors

committed to an operatic career. The program

aims to give every qualified student as much on-stage experience as their time

and energy will allow. In this way, UNL can serve as both a training ground for the

serious voice student and as a vocational cultural experience for those learners

seeking a more general education.

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-

Lied College of Fine and Performing arts presents the 11th annual Student Dance

Project, directed by Susan Levine Ourada in the Mabel Lee Hall Dance Space

(Room 304/310, 14th and Vine Streets). The performance will take place at 7:30

p.m. each night on December 4 and 5. The Student Dance Project is a program of

original work by student choreographers. Tickets are $5 for General Admission,

$3 for Students/Seniors and are available at the door.

Student Dance Project


Founded in 1879, the University of Nebraska band program has grown

from a single small ROTC band to encompass five ensembles that perform

for a combined audience of over a million people annually. The University

of Nebraska Cornhusker Marching Band is a group of dedicated marching

musicians that carry on the proud tradition of excellence that has been upheld

and handed down for over 135 years. The “Pride of All Nebraska” is one of

the best and best-known collegiate bands in the country and is one of the few

college bands to have performed at every major bowl game. The 300-piece

ensemble includes woodwinds, brass, percussion (battery and pit) and color

guard. The Cornhusker Marching Band, directed by Anthony Falcone, resides in

the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Membership in the Cornhusker Marching Band is determined by audition,

and students of all majors are encouraged to try out. There are two rounds of

auditions: the first round takes place in May and the final round takes place

before classes begin in August. Audition music and schedule information can

All-Collegiate Choir The All-Collegiate Choir, directed by Matthew Armstrong, is comprised of UNL students as well as singers from the Lincoln area.

Big Red Singers Directed by Kirk Schjodt (Prof. Peter Eklund, faculty advisor), UNL’s Big Red Singers is an ensemble featuring some of the university’s finest musicians. Outstanding performers from all over the university, representing a variety of different majors from Music Education to Engineering to Psychology and including many students involved in the Greek system, work together in the development of entertaining, high-energy, fully-choreographed shows. The ensemble’s repertoire is chosen from a wide variety of popular music as well as music from Broadway.

Campus Band The Campus Band, directed by Douglas Bush, is the university’s largest concert band. Its select mission is to provide a high quality performance venue for musicians representing a wide array of musical backgrounds and major fields of study within the university.

Campus Orchestra Campus Orchestra, directed by Tyler White, is the string players’ counterpart to the other Glenn Korff School of Music ensembles that do not require auditions and cater to the non-music major crowd, such as Campus Band and various of the choral ensembles.

Chamber Singers The University Chamber Singers, directed by Eph Ehly, are UNL’s premiere vocal chamber ensemble. A small choir of 24-28 voices, it is intended to provide the highest level of choral chamber performance experience for graduate and undergraduate singers at the Glenn Korff School of Music and throughout the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Jazz Orchestra and Big Band The UNL Jazz Orchestra, directed by Paul Haar, is the university’s showcase jazz organization and one of the Glenn Korff School of Music’s most visible performing groups. UNL Big Band, directed by Patrick Brown, is a vital component of the UNL jazz curriculum.

Symphonic Band The Symphonic Band, directed by Anthony Falcone, has the distinction of being the band program’s top symphonic ensemble. Its select mission is to provide instrumentalists with an opportunity to demonstrate and develop the techniques and musical instincts appropriate to a symphonic setting.

Philharmonia The UNL Philharmonia: Opera/Chamber Orchestra is a highly select instrumental ensemble that provides accompaniment annually to one production of UNL’s opera program, and that performs the virtuoso concert repertoire of the 18th through 21st centuries written for smaller orchestral forces.

Symphony Orchestra Members of the Symphony Orchestra, directed by Tyler White, include students from throughout the university. The ensemble’s objectives are to prepare and present a wide variety of repertoire including chamber, symphonic, and operatic masterworks, and to maintain professional standards of musicianship and etiquette within a collegial and supportive educational atmosphere.

University Chorale University Chorale, directed by Rhonda Fuelberth, is a women’s vocal ensemble that performs a varied repertoire of soprano/alto literature. Through the study and performance of diverse musical expressions that represent a variety of historical and cultural perspectives, students participating in University Chorale develop the knowledge, skills, interests, values, and attitudes associated with individual and ensemble musicianship and artistry.

University Singers University Singers is a show choir and UNL’s premiere and historic flagship large choral ensemble directed by Peter Eklund. They present the finest and most versatile choral singers in the entire University.

Varsity Chorus The University of Nebraska’s Varsity Men’s Chorus, directed by Pete Eklund, is dedicated to the service of the University, the state, its members, and to the art of music. Membership is open to any male singer enrolled in the university.

Vocal Jazz The UNL Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a small choir, directed by David von Kampen, that focuses on performing in the jazz idiom. It is open to all members of the University community by audition. Students are instructed in varying tonal and timbral production, the art of solo jazz singing, and vocal improvisation.

Wind Ensemble The Wind Ensemble, directed by Carolyn Barber, is the university’s premiere concert band. Its select mission is to provide instrumentalists of advanced technical proficiency a pre-professional ensemble experience.

Winter Festival for Winds and Percussion info

January 22-24, 2016

The Winter Festival is a unique concert band and chamber ensemble festival for high

school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The festival is designed to give outstanding musicians a comprehensive playing

experience. Festival participants are chosen through a recorded audition process.

Students attending the festival are involved in three different ensembles: a select

honor band; a chamber ensemble coached by one of the Glenn Korff School of Music’s

talented applied wind and percussion faculty; and a large symphonic band that

combines the festival honor band with the University Wind Ensemble.

Students also participate in a masterclass with the applied wind and percussion faculty.

Honors Spring Strings

February 19-20, 2016

The Annual Honors Spring Strings will be held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

for high school freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students will work directly

with UNL’s award winning string faculty.

Midwest Cup

January 16, 2016

The Midwest Cup Show Choir Invitational is a full day of spectacular vocals and

intense choreography, held in one of the premier venues for a show choir competition

anywhere in the country. This year, approximately 800 musicians will gather on

January 16th to perform before 2,300 seats filled with enthusiastic listeners. The

Midwest Cup provides an opportunity for some of the finest show choirs in the region

to showcase their performances and compete against one another for the grand

championship at the end of the evening. In the final analysis, while only one school will

be named Grand Champion 2016, everyone in attendance “wins,” by being part of this

full day of the highest level of this musical art.

Our competition is divided into three classes: Varsity, Prep, and Single Gender, with

trophies for the top three in Prep and Single Gender, as well as awards for the Varsity

ensembles who advance to finals. There are also awards for best male and female

soloist, best band, and best choreography. In past years, we’ve had schools from as far

away as Texas, South Dakota, and the Chicago suburbs which makes for a great mix of

groups performing during an incredibly rewarding day!

Flute Day

Flute Day is here again! High school flutists will perform in morning master classes

with Dr. John Bailey, UNL professor of flute, and guest collegiate flutists perform in

the afternoon master class. There will be a flute choir reading session for all partic-

ipants (bring your flutes!) and a showcase recital featuring UNL flutists performing

flute and piano and flute solo works. Requests to play in the master classes will be

honored as received, with preference given to 11th and 12th graders and visiting col-

lege flutists. Younger flutists will be selected as space permits. Those selected to play

The Dance Program is part of the Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied

College of Fine and Performing Arts. The Dance Studio and dance faculty offices

are located in Mabel Lee Hall. Dance classes are also held in the Johnny Carson

Theatre at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Classes

Dance classes are open to all UNL students according to the prerequites listed in

UNL Bulletin. Ballet and modern dance classes are the primary techniques offered

with elective classes in other areas including:

Performances are an integral part of the UNL Dance Program. The concert season

includes one major production with works by faculty and guest artists each year

and two informal productions, which include student choreography and works in

progress.

take beginning, intermediate and advanced technique classes in a designated

order. This has made for more skilled dancers who are able to participate in dance

program concerts and department productions as well as community projects.

2015-2016 Webcasting Calendar

More than 4,000 unique users from all over the world watched more than

102,000 minutes of 39 concerts webcast this academic year by the Glenn

Korff School of Music. In addition, 2,500 people watched more than 11,000

minutes per month of the videos posted on YouTube.

“It’s been a remarkably happy success,” said Glenn Korff School of Music Director

John W. Richmond as he summed up the first full year of webcasting selected concerts.

The live webcasting of concerts, done in partnership with Nebraska Educational

Telecommunications (NET), helps expand the reach of the Glenn Korff School of Music.

For each concert that is webcast, there are two people who work behind the

scenes at NET to make it happen. Steven Cohen, a Master of Music student this past

year, was the Graduate Teaching Assistant in charge of webcasting this year. He would

read the score of what was being performed to adjust the cameras to highlight soloists

or groups within the many ensembles webcast over the year.

“The experience of webcasting is like nothing else I have ever worked on from

either a musical or technical perspective,” Cohen said. “There is an art behind taking

a piece of music and taking its magical moments and sharing those though video. I

loved having the chance to share the work of the Glenn Korff School with the world.”
