Principal’s Desk Week 8 Term 2 CASUALS As parents would be aware there are times when staff are sick just like our students. Unfortunately, at the moment all schools across the State are finding it extremely difficult to find appropriate casual teachers to take over the relevant classes. This issue has been raised at HR State reference groups, which I am a member of, however at this stage there is not much that schools can do. We are very fortunate at Glenhaven that our staff are so well prepared and collegial that if a class is split that colleagues have relevant and appropriate work to give the students to ensure their academic program is continuing. I would like to thank staff for their outstanding work in this area and am very proud of the collaboration and support that our staff show to each other to continue to support our students. ATHLETICS CARNIVALS Yesterday afternoon a call was made to postpone both our carnivals due to the forecast of continuous rain today. These decisions do not come lightly and it is very disappointing that after all the preparation last Friday that we did have to make this call. It was felt it would be beneficial to our students not to sit in cold rainy weather when we do, at this stage, have options to book another day. A note will come home soon for signing for the new date to follow department protocol. It will only be a permission note and all event nominations will remain the same. WELCOME BACK MRS WILSON As most of our community would be aware Mrs Zucconi was successful in her application for a Relieving Assistant Principal role at Roselea Public School and has already commenced. Mrs Wilson has generously agreed to return from her leave and take over the reins of the class. I know she is very excited about this year and that the class are going to benefit from her enthusiasm and expertise. Welcome back Mrs Wilson. DANCE TROUPES This Sunday both of our performance troupes will be competing at the prestigious Sydney City Eisteddfod held at the Sydney Opera House. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching their routines develop over the year and know they will impress not only the judges but also the audience. Unfortunately, I have a prior engagement in Melbourne this weekend and will miss their performance but will be sending lots of good wishes and will be kept up to date by the staff. Kerry Maxwell | Principal KINDERGARTEN UPDATE As you would be aware, Mrs Zucconi was recently successful in her application for a Relieving Assistant Principal position at another school for the remainder of the year. We wish her all the very best in the next stage of her journey in becoming an educational leader. We would like to warmly welcome Mrs Janine Wilson who will be taking over the Kindy class for the remainder of the year. Mrs Wilson is very excited to be taking over and looking forward to getting into the Kindergarten routine. CALMSLEY CITY FARM RECOUNTS I saw a cow and I saw a pig and I saw some horses. I saw a lamb and a goat. I went on a tractor and I milked a cow and I patted a sheep. I saw a sheep dog and rooster and I saw a bull. I patted chicks. some sheep dogs rounding up the sheep and I saw some hay. I saw some sheep on the hay and I saw some milk coming out of the cow. Written by Reuben - KZ Yesterday Kindergarten went to the farm. The tractor ride was bumpy. I liked the farmer shave the sheep. It was funny. I pated a bunny and a chick. They were so cute. The bus ride was very long. I LOVE the farm because I liked milking the cow. Written by Wren – KS

HILLS PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION YEARS 3-6 This year our school is participating in the Hills Network Public speaking competition. The aims of this competition are as follows:

To build confidence and self-esteem. To extend students’ skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. To encourage and foster proficiency in the art of public speaking. To develop a relationship with our network schools.

Students in Years 3-6 will receive a note from their teacher regarding this competition outlining what is required. Each student is required to write a speech on a topic and present it to their class during Weeks 1 and 2 in Term 3. The topics are:

Year 3: A topic starting with the letter “D” Year 4: ‘A day in the life of…

Year 5: A ‘why’ question. Year 6: Own choice

Each class will choose two speakers, who will then speak in front of the Stage at an Assembly. The best speaker from each grade will represent Glenhaven PS at the competition. The final will be held on Tuesday 10th September at Dural PS. So, get started, get some ideas together, do a bit of research and write that winning speech! Mrs Egginton

PSSA AFL Friday 31 May 2019 Juniors Glenhaven junior AFL won 50 to 6 against Beaumont Hills PS. The captain for the game was Rowdie and his player of the week was Cooper. The coach’s player was Knox for getting into everything. Written by Noah. Seniors Glenhaven senior AFL team played Beaumont Hills PS. We won 59-10. It was a tough game despite the score and in the end we won. We tried to get Sebastian a goal - hopefully next time, Seb. The captain’s player of the week was Jack for getting all the centre clearances and making it less connected in the forwards. The coach’s player was Oliver for some great marks. Written by Jack and Eamon.

Friday 7 June, 2019 Juniors The Junior AFL team played an excellent game this week against Matthew Pearce PS. The final result was a win with a score 4of 8-19. The captain's player of the match was Knox for being a great all round player and the Coach's player of the match was Patrick. Well done team.

Seniors The senior AFL team had an extremely hard game against Matthew Pearce. With it raining on and off, the ball was slippery and difficult to control. Both the parents and the coach found it a very stressful game. We were down after the first third, even after the second third and thankfully won the game at the final whistle by only one point. The final score was 27-26. It was great to get the win.

FOOTBALL – Round 6 Friday 7 June 2019 Junior Boys The junior football team won 4-2 against Oakhill Drive. We were trailing 2-0 at half time but made some adjustments which worked well and we won the second half 4-0. We need to continue working on passing and communicating better during the games. Captains player was Dante and coaches player was Hunter. Written by Hunter K Open Girls The Open girls played against Oakhill Drive for the very first competition game. We did really well and passed the ball well to open up the field. We worked hard as a team. The final score was a 0-0 draw. We were unlucky not to score a goal close to the end of play with Oakhill's keeper making an amazing save right on the line. Captains player was Amber and coaches player was Iliana. Written by Samantha W Senior Boys The senior boys played a very good game against Oakhill Drive but ended up loosing 6-0 which isn't an accurate reflection of the game. The weather putn us oof our game. The other team played exceptionally well and passed the ball around really well, making the most of their opportunities. Captains players was Campbell and coaches player was Harrison. Written by Zac C Friday 15 June, 2019 - Round 7 Junior Boys Our team played well today but were unfortunate to go down 4-3. The game flowed end to end and was goal for goal. Our attack was really structured but our defence suffered a little today with a few players missing. Felix scored a hat-trick and followed the ball extremely well up front. We will need to work on improving our throw in's and our defence. Captains player was Will, coaches player was Felix. This continues to develop positive respectful relationships among students and staff which in turn promotes student wellbeing and ensures a productive learning environment. It takes time for students to learn expectations across the variety of school settings. To retain new behaviours, students are given specific, positive feedback and opportunities to reflect on their behaviour. Students are reminded about expected behaviour and retaught expectations before receiving any consequences. Our aim at Glenhaven PS is to create and maintain a positive environment for learning. Glenhaven is formalising our current systems that are in place in our classrooms to be in line with our whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning program. Our PBL program now encompasses both playground and classroom settings.

Our fortnightly focus for weeks 8, 9 and 10 is the playground. In particular, we are focusing on two things: walking on hard surfaces at all times and following teacher instructions promptly. If you are able to discuss these matters as well with your children at home, this will help reinforce our school expectations.
