The village was named in 1878 after the Green Valley Hotel established in the 1840s by Mary McDonald. During these early days, it was a popular spot just south of Green Valley, northeast of the Beaudette River. Travelers between Hawkesbury and Lancaster would stop for a rest and a drink (of course). The first Post office in Green Valley came in 1878 at the end the 8th Concession. This same 8th Concession in Lancaster Township had at one time three schools, a cemetery, a cheese factory and a post office. In 1916 the locals were embroiled in the Green Valley School Row related to the Ontario “Regulation 17”, attempting to limit the teaching of French in schools. Green Valley expanded in 1887 when the Canadian Pacific Railway crossed Highway 34. This would link Green Valley to Apple Hill and more importantly, Toronto and Montreal. The railroad station at Green Valley was a very busy place for local farmers... receiving goods by freight and sending out milk, cream and farm produce to Montreal. In 1886 a telegraph line was built to Green Valley by the CPR. In the 1920s a few stores were built. In 1938 Leo Lajoie built the ever-so-popular Green Valley Pavilion which drew crowds from everywhere. Continued on Page 4...

But remember silver can buy your mem-bership renewalUnless you are already a lifetime mem-ber itʼs a bargain at twice the price as Dane Lanken frequently points out Feb-ruary was the month for membership re-newals Please drop by the membership desk at the next General Meeting to take care of this or send in your renewal to the Society address The annual fees are $20 or $25 for a family membership No better bargain exists in Glengarry

Guest Speakers continued from page 1The Pavilion became a church in 1956 In the 30s Wilfrid Menard

moved into the village with Menard Construction and Jos Vaillancourt built a large feed mill near the CPR tracks which later burned in December 1966

Ron and Maurice will cover this later period with a selection of photo-graphs giving more of an idea of the times They will describe especially the agricultural development on the 8th Concession

With a note of sadness Ron mentioned the loss of the younger people of the area to the cities

We look forward to their presentation on one of the key communities in Glengarry
