PEOPLE OF KILLARNEY

Nathan Harris-Thompson Nathan Harris-Thompson’s band was formed by ac-cident. One summer evening in 2015 he and current bandmate Ben were jamming in Edworthy Park. By the end of the evening, multiple people had approached them asking when and where they were playing next and whether or not they were selling albums. “We knew right away that we better get something together quickly,” he says, and they did. Since that fortuitous sum-mer night, a third member, Navarro, joined the band, and Steel and Timber was officially formed.

Those who attended Cheers Killarney in May had the pleasure of watching Steel and Timber play for the first time in the Killarney community. Nathan and his family moved to Killarney a year ago and he has nothing but good things to say: “Killarney is a great neighbourhood!” he says. “It has a lot of charm. It has been great making new friends, along with our daughters!”

Nathan believes that volunteering and participating in the community is important, “A healthy community is a product of a positive culture, where people are buying in, and are committed to its success. Volunteering our time is acknowledging that something good and bigger than ourselves is happening, and ensuring that it con-tinues. That’s the buy-in.”

Part of the buy-in is figuring how to get started and, to Nathan, it’s as simple as finding out what’s happening in the community. “There are many organizations work-ing very hard, often in a volunteer capacity, to showcase art, music, dance, language, food, and active living, and they do it for us!” He notes, “All of these things are op-portunities for a community to come together and find out just how vibrant it can be.”

To hear the alternative folk and roots sound of Steel and Timber for yourself, and for a complete list of upcoming shows, check out their website at www.steel-and-timber.com.

I hope you are enjoying a great summer!

Soccer fever is over with the windups of local commu-nity programs Triwest and Timbits as well as the World Cup providing many mornings of early entertainment in July. If you were not riveted by overtimes, penalty shoot-outs, emotional dives and the general array of fans that travelled to Russia to take part in the festivi-ties, you might want to take note! In 2026, the World Cup comes to North America with games likely being played in Edmonton.

I remember watching my first professional soccer games in South America while I was travelling in my twenties. The passion was remarkable and, moreover, the chant-ing and pride was overwhelming—it was impossible not to be swept up in the fever. People from all socio-economic backgrounds flooded into a stadium linking arms, banging drums, sporting painted faces, and wear-ing flags for capes in unity. The thunder of sound was astounding as opposing supporters rallied team songs back and forth to each other—I was bewildered at how the team could concentrate on their game! Sports: what a way to break down social barriers! If you have never watched a live match, look forward to it next spring when Calgary’s first professional soccer team will join the new Canadian Premier League playing out at Spruce Meadows.

Our “Killarney Hub,” the community centre on 28th street, will host some interesting events this fall as we respond to the Community Survey with a new Events Director at the helm—welcome Elena! Our Facebook page is a great resource for finding out information about what’s on @YourKGCA.

This summer we are also grateful to our new Treasurer, Luke, for stepping forward with his wealth of experience in accounting as he was able to set up our association with a five-year financial strategy. We are grateful for his perspective.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Carolyn Johnson, KGCA President

DID YOU KNOW?

Cannabis Legislation FAQs With the upcoming changes to cannabis legislation, the KGCA knows that it’s im-portant to keep the community informed on the development permit process and what it means for Killarney-Glengarry. As of writing this, there have been at least three applicants who are seeking to serve our community in the near future. The following FAQs were provided by Brandy MacInnis, the Senior Special Proj-ects Officer at Calgary Growth Strategies, Strategic Initiatives, Planning and Devel-opment at The City of Calgary.

•AGLC will not issue a license until all mu-nicipal approvals have been completed. An applicant for a cannabis store does not require an AGLC license to apply for

the municipal development permit for a cannabis store.

•The Land Use Bylaw rules require a min-imum separation distance of 300 me-tres from one Cannabis Store to another Cannabis Store.

•Each development permit is reviewed on its own merits. All discretionary fac-tors will be taken into account before a decision will be made. The earliest projected date that The City can begin to make decisions will be June 25, 2018.

•There are Bylaw rules which require a minimum setback of 150.0 metres from a school and an emergency shelter. Cannabis Stores cannot abut a Liquor Store. The planning policy for Cannabis Stores requires at least 10 metres from a

Child Care Service. The Provincial Regu-lations will require a 100.0 metre sepa-ration distance from a hospital. Not all requirements have been finalized so there may be more changes.

•Development Permit circulations invite planning comments from stakeholders. We request that CAs continue to iden-tify planning concerns in the same way they do for other applications.

The KCGA AGM was held on June 20th. The event opened with a recognition of Aboriginal Awareness week. With traditional drumming and songs, Cheryle

Chagnon-Greyeyes, a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, offered a territory acknowledgment. A territory or land acknowledgment is an act of reconciliation

which recognizes the land as being a traditional territory of the Indigenous people before settlers arrived. Following the acknowledgement, local volunteer

Amanda Ducheminsky gave a moving speech about how volunteering has impacted her life and career.

The business portion of the AGM began with the president report which spoke to the KGCA’s new vision, goals, lifecycle overview, and profile. The Directors

of the Communications; Safe Streets; Development and Planning; Projects and Programs; and Events/Engagement/Volunteers sub-committees presented on

each of their portfolios which was followed by an encouraging Treasurer’s Report. The meeting ended with the election of Elena Gadaeva as the new Director of Events, closing remarks by Councillor Evan Woolley and MLA Brian Malkinson,

and ice cream.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. I still have the poems and short stories I wrote as a kid, safely stowed in the same purple unicorn folder. My fa-vourite projects in elementary school where those that required writing; I can’t count how many times I started working on the novel I was so certain I was going to write.

As an adult, I still love writing (although I have yet to write that novel) which is why, after contributing for a couple of months, I am excited to start as the volun-teer editor for the KGCA newsletter. Not only do I get to write, but I get to write about things that are happening in a community I love. I get to meet new, great people, learn great things and compile all of these great things into a nice little package for everyone to experience. How did I get so lucky?

The best part is that writing about Killarney-Glengarry has really opened my eyes to all that there is to do and see in the community. I’ve lived in Killarney for almost five years and I had no idea how much I could partici-pate in. From Cheers Killarney to the AGM, I’ve met more people in my community over the past two months than I have in the past five years.

I know I have some big shoes to fill and I hope you con-tinue to read and enjoy the newsletter like I have since I moved to this area. Like editors in the past, I will always welcome ideas and suggestions and especially articles and images. I want to continue to showcase Killarney-Glengarry and the great people who live here, and the best way to do that is to get everyone involved.

I’m looking forward to meeting you!
