Three Way Parent – Teacher Information Sharing Parents will be invited to attend the three way parent, student and teacher discussion meetings for Grades 1-2 on Tuesday 27th February and Grades 3-6 on Wednesday 28th February. The Getting to Know You Questionnaire, which we ask parents to complete before-hand will assist in the preparation and provided a platform for discussions. This will be sent home over the next week. The Individual Learning Improvement Plan (ILIP) formulation focuses on areas of improvement and what parents can do to support and extend their child’s learning at home. ILIP goals will be planned for each area of English, Mathematic and Interpersonal/Personal Learning with input from both children and parents about their future learning and achievements. I am sure you will find this meeting highly valuable.

School Uniform Wearing our school uniform is like a badge of pride, creates an identity for our school and is an important part of being a member of our school community. At GHPS we promote a smart dress code, believe that school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take part in their appearance.

How are you helping our school? Can you self- assess how you are sending your child to school: Is it?

1. Extremely well – my child wears the correct uniform every day

2. Very good – my child wears the correct uniform most days

3. Good – but I need to change 1 thing 4. Fair – there is more than one thing I need to

change. Our aim is for all parents to be able to self-assess as a one by the end of next week – Friday, 23rd February. So do you need to change something? I would ask each parent to look closely at what their child is wearing and make sure they don’t wear other colored leggings or pants. If so, we would like you to make the necessary change/s. The uniform shop is open Wednesday morning from 9.00 – 10.00am. If you can’t make it to the uniform shop you can collect a form from the office and return

with payment so the goods can then be taken home by your child.

The uniform is: Navy Blue or Maroon Track pants/Bootleg pants Maroon Long Sleeve Polo Maroon or White Short Sleeve Polo Maroon Bomber Jacket/Polar Fleece Jacket Navy (Grade 6 only) Bomber Jacket – Grade 6 names Maroon or Navy Shorts / Skorts / Cullottes Girls Summer Dress Libby Alessi Principal -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every Day Counts Every Day Counts emphasises the importance of children attending school every day and provides schools and parents with tools they can use to promote full time school attendance. Parents are required to ensure their child attends school and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school, and the principal must record in writing the reason (if any) given by the parent.

The principal must be able to determine from the records if the excuse given was reasonable in terms of the parent meeting their legal obligations. Parents should inform the school of the reason for their child’s absence so that the school can:

determine if the child’s absence needs to be excused by the principal, in line with school policy and these guidelines

determine the appropriate follow up to ensure the child’s education and wellbeing is supported

record if the parent has a reasonable excuse for not meeting their obligation to ensure their child attends school each day.

Where possible, parents should inform the school in advance of upcoming absences. The DET are working hard on improving attendance of all students and there are new indicatives’ being rolled out at the moment and we will share more information with you in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or concerns over your child’s attendance please see Amy Tinetti our Assistant Principal.

GHPS Home Reading Guide

Literacy activities Reading and Viewing refers to all the ways of constructing meaning from texts. This includes reading printed texts such as books, magazines, posters and charts and viewing multimodal texts such as films, videos, computers and graphic material. Reading is taught using strategies which put text into a meaningful and purposeful context and enable children to decode words. Some of these activities include the following:

modelled reading, shared book (teacher and children read a story together), teaching the alphabet and phonemic awareness (sounds and symbols), book studies (activities and discussion which focus on a particular book), author studies (exploring the ways texts are structured and the purposes of different books written by one author) and guided reading (small groups which read and discuss texts with a particular focus and/or reading level). All children are encouraged to develop their curiosity and love of literature. Children are expected to read or be read to at home each night.

Reading at Home In our school Home Learning policy, (accessible at http://www.glenhuntlyps.vic.edu.au/ and can be found by clicking on the Parent Information tab and scrolling down to Policies) the school makes the following recommendations in relation to your children reading at home: Junior Classes (Foundation – Year 2): 10 - 15minutes oral reading and text discussion per afternoon /evening Years 3 – 4: 20 minutes oral reading and text discussion per afternoon/evening Years 5 – 6: 30 minutes per evening reading and text discussion per afternoon/evening

When reading with your child, we also recommend that you use the following list of questions to improve phonics and sight word skills, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension: Reading discussion questions

Look at the cover – what do you think this book is about?

What is happening in this picture? How can we work out these tricky words? What do you think will happen next? Can you retell to me what we just read? What do you think about what you just read? Would you like to be in this story? Why or why not

would you like to be a part of this story?

We had a quick walk to the Carnegie outdoor swimming pool to compete for the House Shield and Spirit Cup. Some of the events were Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Diving off the three metre diving board. We can’t forget the relays, won by the one and only Batman. Everyone tried their hardest, but it was the great and powerful Batman that won the house shield led by Kayla Pecer and the magnificent Flinders won the Spirit Cup led by Ronnie Bhuteja. We would like to thank Miss K and all the other teachers and parents for helping out with the fantastic event. Overall it was a beautiful day. Kayla 6A
