Thank you also to Mrs Eugenia Sassos and Ms Amy Tinetti who will be providing parents with an invitation to attend the Report Information Afternoon and Evening held on Tuesday 27 th June which will explain how to interpret the report format. You may notice some changes to our student reports this semester in line with the implementation of the new Victorian Curriculum in all government and Catholic schools from the beginning of 2017. The Victorian Curriculum replaces the previous AusVELS curriculum. As a result of the Victorian Curriculum the report is structured as a single developmental learning continuum and is organised by levels, not years of schooling. The curriculum consists of Towards Foundation Levels A to D and Levels Foundation to 10. All curriculum areas have achievement standards, describing what students are able to understand and do. All students’ progress along the learning continuum at their own rate and from their own starting point. Students are taught at the level that suits their needs, rather than being taught to the year level and age group they are in. Teachers provide learning opportunities to support the learning for all students, including those students with additional learning needs or a disability. Please keep in mind that as this is a new curriculum this report is not designed nor should be compared to previous years’ reports.

Principal’s Report 2017 Principal Region Forum Last week Ms Amy Tinetti and I attended the Department of Education and Training (DET) presentation of Inspired Teaching and Learning: Creating The Education State 2017 Regional Principal Forums. The opening address was from The Hon James Merlino Deputy Premier and the Minister for Education. Other presenters included DET personnel and key note speakers from Ontario, Canada.

School Leaders were gathered together to help us build the capacity of our system and to further learn about how to implement the Education State Excellence in Teaching and Learning Strategies and Initiatives. This work will be supported by the initiatives in the school’s 2017 Annual Implementation Plan.

Congratulations to Mr John Jacobs On the 13th June, Mr John Jacobs and his wife welcomed their first child, a son, Raywatt Jacobs. They are all doing very well and we wish them all the very best and hope they are enjoying parenthood! Mr Jacobs will return to 5/6 J on Tuesday 27th June.

Publicity and Marketing (P & M) The Publicity and Marketing Committee and School Council is very pleased to view the new banner along the West Site fence. It is such a prominent sign and what a great advertisement for the school!

As families will recall from reading the newsletter 20th October last year, the School Reviewer, Mr Tony Ross stated in his closing summary, “GHPS is a very, very good school and is performing in the top 10 % in the state.”

Members of the P & M Committee and Council felt this was a very positive message and wanted to celebrate it with our community.

Well done everyone and we appreciate your recognising what a lot of hard work is behind such a claim!

Assessment & Reporting Next week all families will receive their child’s June Report on Wednesday 28th June detailing their academic progress during Semester 1, including effort and behavior.

I hope parents find the report informative and discuss the contents with their child. The teachers have put a tremendous amount of time into writing each child’s comments and assessing each area of the curriculum and I thank them for the hours and hours of work spent doing so.

Thank you also to Mrs Eugenia Sassos and Ms Amy Tinetti who will be providing parents with an invitation to attend the Report Information Afternoon and Evening held on Tuesday 27th June which will explain how to interpret the report format.

  • We can, however, show your child’s progress in English and Mathematics in Semester 1 as these learning areas were introduced and taught in 2016. For all other curriculum areas being introduced with the new curriculum, student progress can only be shown in reports from Semester 2, 2017 onwards. Further information may be found by attending the Information Session.

Within the report, there is a page for parents to provide feedback to the school about their child’s progress and the report and I invite you to return this page with any comments to your child’s class teacher.

The student reflections also form a very important part of the June Student Report and in this section, the students can write about any aspects of their learning that may have been particularly valuable, memorable, and effective or for another reason. I am always highly interested in this part of the report as it can give valuable insight into each student’s journey over the first semester. I have been very impressed by the comments across the grades.

Capital Works As parents would be aware planning is underway for the Stage 2 Capital Works Project. The Tender is out now and when we have been notified by DET and the Victorian Building Authority who the contract has been awarded to, we will distribute a letter notifying everyone of what changes will take place to classrooms during this time.

It is still anticipated that the works commence during term 3, however there has been some holdups external to the school.

2018 Prep Enrolments We would like all families who have pre-schoolers starting school next year to please get their enrolment forms into the office by the end of this term as planning is already well underway for transition and the November dates which are on the school’s website.

Staffing & Long Service Leave (LSL) Term 3 A notice has gone out to the students and families in 5/6P advising them that as much as Mrs Paterson wished to return to GHPS after her surgery earlier this year, she is unable to and has had to retire from teaching. Mrs Paterson has been recovering well however has made the difficult decision to stay on leave permanently.

We have had the pleasure of Mrs Paterson’s teaching at GHPS since 1995 where she has taught Prep, Grades 1, Art, PE and 5 and 6. We feel very proud of Mrs Paterson’s years of service and the highly valuable contribution she has made to so many students at

GHPS. Mrs Paterson is looking forward to visiting GHPS next term. GHPS will welcome back Mrs Lexie Boomsma next term part time. Lexie is delighted to be returning to work with students, parents and staff on Wednesday and Thursday.

She will work with the Grade 1/2 area in Book Club, Monster Maths and Inquiry Learning. Lexie has been doing some CRT work replacing teachers when they are away and I know everyone will look forward to her returning.

Ms Justine de Bruyn will be taking Long Service Leave in week 1 from Monday 17th July and will be returning on Wednesday 26th July and we will welcome Ms Gena Foley to replace her.

Mrs Eugenia Sassos will be taking leave from Monday 17th July to Monday 14th August and we will welcome Mr Vic Thompson to 3S.

We hope both Juz and Eugenia enjoy their well -earned service leave.

End of Term Casual Dress Day This week the Student Council and classes tallied votes regarding the wearing of Casual Dress (CD) options for the last day of term 2. The winning ideas are dressing up in:

    1. Footy teams OR 2. As a GHPS teacher

To wear CD we will be asking students to donate something that could go in a LUCKY JAR for the fete or a made up LUCKY JAR. We hope everyone supports this day!

Chook Roster Term 2 Holidays Ms Tinetti will be distributing a roster for looking after the chooks over the term 2 holidays. We very much appreciate families taking a turn and on behalf of the chooks, look forward to your continued support.

End of Term 2 This is the final reminder for parents that school will be finishing on Friday 30th June. The students will be dismissed from the usual East or West Sites at 2.30pm. Lunch time will be half an hour earlier: 1.-2pm. Please make a note in your phone or on your calendar to pick up your child at this earlier time.

Thank you to the parents who will be rostered on for hot chocolate and icy poles for accommodating this change of time. I hope all staff and families have an enjoyable holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 17th July to start term 3. • Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is on a mission to change the way Australia thinks about waste. He does this by challenging supermarkets and the fast food industry to drastically reduce the amount of waste Australia generates. We live in a country where one third of the food we produce never gets eaten. THE THINGS WE LEARNED:

The average Australian family throws away food worth $3,500 per year.

One billion coffee cups are thrown away every year.

1 tonne of clothing is thrown away every 10 minutes.

Paper coffee cups can’t be recycled.

Would you eat a long, curvy, fat, short banana? There are supermarket restrictions on bananas and many other fruits.

    Thank you for listening and:

Keep Reusing, Reducing and recycling! Vandan and Dyash 5/6P

Rui: Hello everybody, my name is Rui and I’m here to talk about rubbish. So there is a show on ABC iview and it is called ‘War on waste’. There is too much food wasted. So I would like to turn to the person and talk about how we can fix this emergency. And now I would like everyone to listen to our solution ideas. Asher: You can help by wearing your clothes till they’re broken, parents bring your own take away coffee cup to a cafe and bring your own bags when you go shopping because they end up in land fill or the sea. Thank you for listening!

  • COMO HOUSE EXCURSION Hooray! The bus arrived at Como House. I saw 2 adults, their names were Bronwyn and Janine. They said they’re going to help us learn. I can’t wait to do the first activity, this is going to be the best Grade 3 excursion. The first thing we did was find clues to find out who broke the doll. It was hard, but we did it. Our teachers planned this excursion because it’s our Inquiry topic for this term. My favourite thing was the mansion. We learnt how it would be if we were rich in the olden days and how much money the servants get. We played games like Tug of War where the girls versed the boys, and lots of other games. It was time to go back to school. I felt happy the whole day and I learnt a lot of stuff. Daksha 3F

Yay! Our first activity is the old fashioned games. The games we played were Egg and Spoon Race, Sack Race, Drop the Hankey, Hot Potato and Tug of War. I got to see what it was like to be a servant. It was a hard job and the hardest job was holding the water and walking around cones. We went inside Como House and upstairs there was a toilet and when it closed it looked like a drawer. We went downstairs to see the Ballroom. I learnt what they used in the 1900’s. Sienna 3F

“Ding Dong, Ding Dong” said the school bell. It was time to go to Como House. I was so excited because I have never been there before. It was in South Yarra. All the Grade 3’s went. When we got there, we got off the bus and lined up. We walked up the ramps and we got a big welcome from these lovely ladies. They told us that we had four activities which were: Old Fashioned Games, Inside the Mansion, a mystery trail of Who Broke the Doll? And one more, to learn and experience what it was like to be a servant. Our first activity was playing the old fashioned games, but my favourite game was Tug of War. How you play is first you need even player on each side of the rope, then when the teacher says go, the teams need to start pulling the rope to your side. Those games were really fun. After that we went back to our bags and had a little break. Then we found out what our next activity was…….it was going inside the mansion. It was awesome! We saw Gold Leaf around one of the mirrors, we danced like the olden day people did. We got to go upstairs to see some bedrooms and other rooms. All of that was awesome but sadly we had to go and find out what our next activity was going to be. It was The Mystery Trail. My group had some lunch, “Yum, Yum”, then we were off. There were 14 clues to find. We took it in turns to cross off people who had not broken the doll. It was really hard to find all the clues. We found all the clues, but the last clue said you need to have a guess of who it is out of your last 2 people. We thought it was Anne. The clue said you would find who it was at the end of the day. Our last activity was what it was like to be a servant. This was no doubt to be my favourite. I told myself, first we listen to some bells the family used to call their servants, and then we had to carry a tray with some drinks around a cone and back. Wow, that was awesome! They were going to tell us who broke the doll, but they didn’t do it. I was furious! Anyway, I had an awesome day. Alex 3S

  • OOHH! The dining table is so romantic! I wonder if they have servants. Yes, said Janine as if she’d heard me. But how did servants know when to come? “By bell” Janine says again. We were about to go outside when Yug, my best friend, asked Janine “why is Como House named Como House?” “Good question”, says Janine, looking at some children. A person named Williams names Como House because his favourite place was Lake Como, in Italy. Next we played old fashioned games. My favourite game was Tug of War. There were other types of games like skipping and the egg and spoon race. When we were playing Tug of War it was girls vs boys. Boys won one time and the girls won one time, but Ruth said the girls won both times. After that we went on a mystery trail. There were 14 clues. I was hoping to find out the answer but the last clue said you will find out at the end of the day, but we didn’t. We were told that we would find out in 2 weeks because the Grade 4s are also going to Como House and it wouldn’t be fair to tell them. I was so disappointed. Next we went to the servants’ life to see how the servants lived. We did some training with the bell sounds. We had to find out which bell was being rung from which room. Then we did some washing. Armaan got wet from head to toe. The day was so much fun! Unfortunately, we had to go home. On the bus I was Yug’s partner. We had so much fun. Jitesh 3S

Ding, Ding, Ding, went the school bell. I was so excited because 3S and 3F were going on an excursion to Como House. Oh, did I forget to tell you, this is our first excursion in Year 3? Finally the bus has arrived and soon we are at Como House. We got split up into four groups. My first activity was Who Broke the Doll? We had a map to see which way to go and every time we got to the spot we saw a pink piece of paper that had a clue. The second activity I went to was to learn about what it would be like to be a servant. We had to memorise five bells and we had to wash the clothes.

The third activity was the olden day games. We played the Sack Race, Egg and Spoon Race, Oranges and Lemons and Tug of War. The last activity was going in to Como House. We got to dance then went upstairs to the bedroom. Finally we finished, but I hope to go there again. Ivory 3S
