Some newer studies of settlements and origins of population, since the beginning of 90s until present, mostly have been treating the issues of particular settlements. Cvijics anthropogeographic conception, established in the early phase of development of scientific geography in Serbia at the end of 19th century, has been prevailing in the research of villages. In the research of urban settlements, modern complex geographical approach has been prevailing, neglecting the anthropogeographical attributes. The necessity of scientifically funded anthropogeographic knowledge on settlements, in this as well as in other areas of Serbia, is evident, both in science and in different fields of social practice. This knowledge would be based on traditional achievements of Serbian anthropogeographic school, as well as on contemporary achievements in the area of investigations of settlements. Key words: settlement, population, South Eastern Serbia, anthropography, researches

    ABOUT ANTHROPOGEOGRAPHIC RESEARCHES OF SETTLEMENTS IN SOUTH EASTERN SERBIA

    In this article we have embraced time, volume, spatial distribution and relevant results of

    anthropogeographic researches of settlements in South Eastern Serbia (13,721 km2), inside the territory enclosed by the former boundaries, now including five administrative regions of the Republic of Serbia: Niava (excluding the municipality of Raanj), Toplica, Pirot, Jablanica and Pinj region, in which 1,046,730 inhabitants (in 2002), or 14% of total population of central Serbia and Vojvodina (in 1991 1,090,730 inhabitants or 14,4%), in 1,439 settlements, or 23,4% of total number of settlements in Serbia, of which 27 are the urban settlements (according to the legal criteria), realize their biological and economical existences. From the mentioned facts on anthropogeographic researches of settlements of some areas in South Eastern Serbia, the following important notes could be derived:

    - settlements in this area of the Republic of Serbia have the continuity in anthropogeographic researches that lasts few decades, with expressed temporal discontinuity in investigations of some parts of the territory;

    - results of anthropogeographic researches of settlements are antiquated, few decades old, and only partially reliable conclusions on anthropogeographic image of South Eastern Serbia can be derived from them, and

    - requirement for new scientific knowledge (with the anthropogeographic character) on settlements in South Eastern Serbia is evident the settlements in this area have experienced many contemporary phenomena and processes: disturbance of former ethnic balance caused by emigration of Serbian population from numerous settlements in municipalities of Preevo, Bujanovac and Medvea, expressed spontaneous demographic empting of many villages (Gara near Preevo, orevac near Bujanovac, Koritnik near Nika Banja, Vukojevac, Rastelina and Taevac near Kurumlija), presence of Serbian refugees from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Metohija etc.
