Chairman’s welcome 2019

We look forward to welcoming you to Glanton Show on 10th August. We pride ourselves on having a show which is packed with heaps of things to do and see but at the same time run in a relaxed and friendly manner allowing you to enjoy the spectacle and the people at your own pace. Our principal ring attraction this year will be a Gun Dog Training team. I first saw this superb display team at the Scottish Game Fair at Perth, and they are guaranteed to be both very professional and entertaining. Our regular attractions will include the West Percy Foxhounds, our Companion Dog Show, the Hill Race, Pony Sports, Children’s Sports, Archery, the Army Shooting Range, Classic Car show, and a host of stallholders including traders, food providers and country activities. Not forgetting the wonderfully chaotic Terrier Racing Glanton style (terriers are optional). This is of course the backdrop to the main tent where our horticultural and industrial classes will be displaying the talents of our entrants encompassing many hundreds of entries including baking, jam making, flowers, vegetables, stick making, art, handicrafts and photography. All this to the melodic musical accompaniment of QSax our local and extremely able group of saxophonists. The sum of it all is the best value afternoon you can find, a show with something for everyone, and a social gathering par excellence. Where else would you want to be? Jon Radgick

Entry fees: Adult £5, Child £1, Family ticket £10 for two adults and up to four

children. No concessions.

If you would like to have a stall or stand at the show please contact Mike Paice (see

pg.6)

The picture for the children's colouring, Class K5, and copies of the entry form can

be downloaded from the Glanton website www.glanton.org.uk

Please note all details are correct at time of going to press but may be subject to

change. Advance changes will be posted on the Glanton website.

HAVE A GO—ENTER SOMETHING FOR THE SHOW!

There’s something for everyone in Glanton show, so have a look through and see

which classes you would like to enter. Everyone takes photos - so why not enter one?

You don’t have to be an expert – why not try the beginners’ classes for vegetables

V33-36, or flowers F21-23? And remember, all entries are free!

Fill in the entry form on page 26 with your details and the classes you want to enter,

then cut it out and put it in the box in Glanton Post Office. Alternatively post it to the

secretary at 4 The Causeway, Glanton NE66 4AY, or drop it in through her letterbox.

Make sure it’s there by August 7th!

Get ready for show day by sorting out your entries and putting class number label on

each one. Children’s entries need their age as well - but no names.

Show day is here! Get to the show ground early (it is open at 8.00 am) and look for

the secretary’s caravan, where you can collect your personal entry numbers.

Put one of your I.D. numbers on each of your exhibits - it doesn’t matter which goes

on which.

Put each exhibit in the right class area in the marquee.

Prize money has to be claimed after the presentation of the main prizes from the

secretary’s office (i.e. the caravan!)

And finally . . . . GOOD LUCK!

TOP TIPS - FLOWERS

Aim for flowers that are fresh and in peak condition, with no damage or blemishes.

Groups need to be as uniform as possible in size, shape and colour. And don’t

forget, arrangement is always important in flower displays.

With roses you want strong stems that are in proportion to the blooms, and flower

heads that are not touching.

Pansies, buttonholes and sprays look much better if presented on a display board.

TOP TIPS - VEGETABLES

They need to be clean, and to be fresh and tender. They should be unblemished,

and have a good colour. Size isn’t the most important thing - quality comes first.

Groups need to be uniform in size, shape and colour.

Peas and beans are better if presented on a background like a doily. Leave the

bloom on the peas, and choose ones that are full and deep green. With beans look

for straight, tender pods with no outward sign of the seeds.

With onions go for firm, mature bulbs with thin necks.

The best tomatoes are firm, ripe and richly coloured. Choose round, medium-sized

fruits with their calyces attached.

Cabbages should be nice and fresh with a good shape and a solid heart. Trim them

to one outside leaf.

Collections of vegetables look better against a black background.

HANDWRITING TEXT

SCHOOL YEAR 3 AND YEAR 4

All Hallows’ Eve by Constance B. Osborne

The pumpkin grinned from ear to ear

The moon is bright, the sky is clear.

This is the night we’ve waited for,

When witches ride their broomsticks high

And ghosts and goblins fill the sky.

Then Jack and Jill, with fairy queen.

Will dance and sing “It’s Halloween”.

SCHOOL YEAR 5 AND YEAR 6

Song of the Witches by William Shakespeare

Round about the cauldron go;

In the poisoned entrails throw.

Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the cauldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Cool it with a baboon's blood,

Then the charm is firm and good.

Don’t use commercial tin liners - show more skill by lining your own tins.

There should not be any cooling tray marks on the top of the cakes.

Savoury scones should be cut out using a plain cutter and can be glazed with egg or

Pieces of tray bake should be of an even size and shape with all four sides being cut

sides.

Pastry should be of an even thickness, evenly baked and if it is a tart or flan then the

underneath should not be underdone.

Jars and lids used for preserves should be plain, with no trademarks or names on

The ditty below was unearthed by John Carr-Ellison who reckons it was written sometime between 1917 and 1923. Apparently Sam Dunn, the Hedgeley station porter, was a well-known local Romeo.

It obviously must be sung to the tune of “Blaydon Races”
