AboutPolicyRates

1. Basispoints:Itistheincreaseininterestratesinpercentageterms.Forinstance,iftheinterestrateincreasesby50basispoints(bsp), thenitmeansthatinterestratehasbeenincreaseby50%.Onepercentagepointisbrokendowninto100basispoints.Therefore,anincreasefrom2%to3%isanincreaseofonepercentagepointor100basispoints.

2. CRR:CashreserveRatio(CRR)istheamountoffundsthatthebankshavetokeepwithRBI.IfRBIdecidestoincreasethepercentofthis,theavailableamountwiththebankscomesdown.RBIisusingthismethod(increaseofCRRrate),todrainouttheexcessivemoneyfromthebanks.Thecurrentrateis4%,whichmeansforacashdepositofRs.100,thebankhastopark4rupeewiththecentralbank.

3. Reporate:ReporateisthepolicyrateandispartofRBIsLiquidityAdjustmentFacility(LAF).ItistherateatwhichcommercialbanksborrowfromtheRBIbysellingtheirsecuritiesorfinancialassetstotheRBIforashortperiodoftime.ItcomeswithanagreementthatthesoldsecuritieswillberepurchasedbythecommercialbanksfromtheRBIatafuturedateatpredeterminedprice.Thereporateisusedbythecentralbanktoincreaseliquidityinthesystem.

4. Reversereporate:ReverseRepoRateisalsoapartofLAF.Itistherateofinterestatwhichthecentralbankborrowsfundsfromotherbanksforashortduration.Thebanksdeposittheirshorttermexcessfundswiththecentralbankandearninterestonit.Thisrateisusedbythecentralbanktoabsorbliquidityfromtheeconomy.GenerallyitisonepercentagelessthantheReporate.

5. Bankrate:Theonlywaythebankrateisdifferentfromthereporateisthatthebankrateistherateatwhichbanksborrowmoneyfromthecentralbankwithoutanysaleofsecurities.Itisgenerallyforalongerperiodoftime

MarginalStandingFacility:TheReserveBankofIndiainitsmonetarypolicyfor201112introducedthemarginalstandingfacilityunderwhichbankscouldborrowfundsfromRBIwhenthereisaconsiderableshortfallofliquidity.ThismeasurehasbeenintroducedbyRBItoregulateshorttermassetliabilitymismatchesmoreeffectively.Underthisfacility,bankscanborrowupto1%oftheirnetdemand.
