    20. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted an additional nine months for the public to exchange currency notesprinted before 2005, including Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 denominations, and set a deadline of January 1, 2015. As

    per the RBI, pre-2005 notes can be identified easily as these notes do not have the year of printing

    22. ICICI Bank Ltd. launched Branch on Wheelsin Odisha as part their financial inclusion plans toprovide Banking services in remote villages. Odishais the third state where ICICI Bank has expanded its Branchon Wheels network after Maharashtrain September 2013 and Chattisgarhin February 2014.

    23. Telecom major, Vodafone India and ICICI Bank announced the launch of mobile commerce initiative called

    M-Pesaservice in Odisha.

    24. As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) , Plastic currency noteswill be launched in 2015 after field trial which islikely to be conducted in the latter half of 2014. The pilot testing would be conducted in five cities- Kochi,Mysore, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Shimla.

    25. One billion plastic notes of Rs.10 denomination will be released in the field trial in these cities chosen fortheir geographical andclimatic diversity. Plastic currency notes have an average life span of about 5 years andare difficult to counterfeit. Also, these notes are cleaner than paper notes.

    26. Star trading houses big importers and exporters has been permitted by the RBI to import gold under itsexisting 20:80 scheme. Thus far, the facility was available to select banks only and other big entities like startrading houses were forbidden from importing the yellow metal.

    27. The Government of India has accepted the report of Mayaram Committee thereby accepting the definitions ofFII and FDI.

    Some key points from Mayaram Committee Report: Foreign investment of 10% or more in a listed companywill now be treated as FDI. An investor may be allowed to invest below 10% and this can be treated as FDI subject to the condition

    that the FDI stake is raised to 10% or beyondwithin one yearfrom the date of the first purchase.

    If the stake is not raisedto 10% or above, then the investment can be treated as portfolio investment.

    28. RBI panel headed by Anand Sinhahas recommended bringing a benchmark floating interest rate, especially forhome loans. It also suggested to introduce Indian Banks Base Rate.

    29. Union Government decided to provide interest free loans of 4400 crore to cash-starved sugar UnionGovernment of India on 23 June 2014 decided to provide additional interest free loan of up to 4400 crore rupees tosugar mills.

Switzerland prepared list of Indians with suspected black money in its banks:- Switzerland in third week ofJune 2014 prepared a list of Indians suspected to have stashed un-taxed wealth in various Swiss banks. This can beconsidered as a major boost to Indias fight against black money. Names of Indian individuals and entities wereprepared on the basis of the Swiss authorities ongoing exercise to identify real beneficiary owners of funds held invarious banks operating in Switzerland.

    31. NABARD reduced rates of refinance to boost investment credit:The National Bank for Agriculture and RuralDevelopment (NABARD) on 9 June 2014 reduced the rate of interest by 20 basis points (bps) on long-termrefinance facility to banks with an objective to promote farm sector investments.

    BANKING IMPORTANT TERMS

    1. Commercial Paper: Commercial Paper (CP) is an unsecured money market instrument issued in the form of a

    promissory note. Corporate, primary dealers (PDs) and the All-India Financial Institutions (FIs) are eligible to issue

    CP. Maturity period: between a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of up to one year from the date of issue. CP can

    be issued in denominations of Rs.5 lakh or multiples thereof. Only a scheduled bank can act as an IPA (Issuing andPaying Agent) for issuance of CP.

    2. Treasury Bills: Treasury bills (T-bills) offer short-term investment opportunities. They are thus useful in managing

    short-term liquidity. At present, the Government of India issues three types of treasury bills through auctions,

    namely, 91-day, 182-day and 364-day. There are no treasury bills issued by State Governments. Treasury bills are

    available for a minimum amount of Rs.25,000 and in multiples ofRs. 25,000. Treasury bills are issued at a discountand areredeemed at par.

    3. Certificates of Deposit (CD): Certificate of Deposit (CD) is anegotiable money market instrument and issued indematerialised

    form or as a Usance Promissory Note against funds deposited at a bank or other eligible financialinstitution for a specified time period.

    Note: CDs can be issued by (i) scheduled commercial banks{excluding Regional Rural Banks and Local

    Area Banks}; and (ii) select All-India Financial Institutions (FIs) that have been permitted by RBI

    Minimum amount of a CD should be Rs.1 lakh, and in multiples of

    Rs. 1 lakh thereafter. The maturityperiod of CDs issued by banks should not be less than 7 days and not more than one year, from the date ofissue.

    4. Fiscal Deficit: A deficit in the government budget of a country and represents the excess of expenditure over

    income. So this is the amount of borrowed funds require by the government to meet its expenditures completely.

    5. SDR (Special Drawing Rights): SDR are new form of International reserve assets, created by the InternationalMonetary Fund in 1967. The value of SDR is based on the portfolio of widely used countries and they aremaintained as accounting entries and not as hard currency or physical assets like Gold.

    6 . Crossing of Cheque: Crossings refers to drawing two parallel lines across the face of the cheque. A crossed cheque

    cannot be paid in cash across the counter, and is to be paid through a bank either by transfer,

    collection or clearing.

    7. Dishonour of Cheque: Non payment of cheque by the paying banker with a return memo giving reasons for thenon payment.

    8. Demand Draft: Demand draft is defined as an order to pay money drawn by one office of a bank upon anotheroffice of the same bank for a sum of money payable to order on demand. Cheque and Demand draft both are usedfor transfer of money.

    9. Difference b/w Cheque & DD: A cheque can be bounce but D.D cannot be bounce as it is already paid.

    10. NEFT (National Electronic Fund Transfer):NEFT enables funds transfer from one bank to another but works abit differently than RTGS. NEFT is slower than RTGS. The transfer is not direct and RBI acts as the serviceprovider to transfer the money from one account to another. You can transfer any amount through NEFT, even a

    rupee.Minimum limit:No Minimum limit Maximum Limit: No maximum limit

    11. RTGS (Real time gross settlement ): RTGS system is funds transfer systems where transfer of money or securitiestakes place from one bank to another on a "real time" and on "gross" basis. Settlement in "real time" means paymenttransaction is not subjected to any waiting period. The transactions aresettled as soon as they are processed.

    Minimum & Maximum Limit of RTGS: 2 lakh and no upper limit.

    12. Call Money: Call Money is the borrowing or lending of funds for 1day.

    13. Notice Money: Money borrowed or lend for period between 2 days and 14 days it is known as Notice Money

    14. Term Money: Term Money refers to borrowing/lending of funds for period exceeding 14 days

    15. CRAR(Capital to Risk Weighted Assets Ratio) or CAR(Capital Adequacy Ratio): Capital to risk weightedassets ratio is arrived at by dividing the capital of the bank with aggregated risk weighted assets for credit risk,market risk and operational risk.

    16. Non Performing Assets (NPA): An asset, including a leased asset, becomes non performing when it ceases togenerate income for the bank.

    17. Doubtful Asset: An asset would be classified as doubtful if it has remained in the substandard category for a periodof 12 months.

    18. CASA Deposit: Deposit in bank in current and Savings account.

    19. Liquid Assets: Liquid assets consists of cash, balances with RBI, balances in current accounts with banks, money at

    call and short notice, inter-bank placements due within 30 days and securities under held for trading and

    available for sale categories excluding securities that do not have ready market

    20. Import parity price (IPP): The price that a purchaser pays or can expect to pay for imported goods such as petrol,diesel or cooking gas. The import parity price (IPP) is the price at the border of a good that is imported, which includes international transport costs and tariffs. The IPP is used in International trade and is sometimes referred to as the International Benchmark Price.

    21. Export parity price (IPP): The price that a producer gets or can expect to get for its product if exported, equal tothe Freight on Board price minus the costs of getting the product from the farm or factory to the border. The EPP

    applies only to the quantity that is exported and not to the quantity that is sold domestically.

    22. Basis points: It is the increase in interest rates in percentage terms. For instance, if the interest rate increases by50 basis points (bsp), then it means that interest rate has been increase by 50%. One percentage point isbroken down into 100 basis points. Therefore, an increase from 2% to 3% is an increase of one percentage point

    or 100 basis points.

    23. Participatory Notes or P-notes: are derivative instruments, used by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) who are

    NOT registered with SEBI. P-Notes, mostly used by overseas HNIs (High Net worth Individuals), hedge funds and

    other foreign institutions, allow them to invest in Indian markets through registered Foreign Institutional Investors(FIIs), while saving on time and costs associated with direct registrations.

    24. Devaluation: means official lowering of the value of a country's currency within a fixed exchange rate system, bywhich the monetary authority formally sets a new fixed rate with respect to a foreign reference currency.

    25. IFSC: IFSC code means Indian Financial System Code. RTGS and NEFT payment system of Reserve Bank of

    India (RBI) use these codes. IFSC code consists of 11 Characters identified as under (Lets take an example of SBI,Madhapur Hyderabad):- First 4 digits show the Identity of the bank. i.e. SBIN 5th digits in default as ZERO (forfuture use) i.e. 0 Last 6 Characters display the Branch Identity. i.e. 004187 So IFSC Code is SBIN004187

    26. MICR:MICR code means Magnetic Ink Character Recognition code which contains 9 digits, like 380002006appearing at the bottom of the cheque, following the cheque number. Each Bank Branch has a unique MICR code.

    First 3 digits:-City PIN Code + Next 3 digits :Bank Code +Last 3 Digits-Branch Code

    27. CTS (CHEQUE TRUNCATION SYSTEM) CTS is basically an online image-based cheque clearing systemwhere cheque images and Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) data are captured at the collecting bank

    branch and transmitted electronically. Truncation means, stopping the flow of the physical cheques issued by adrawer to the drawee branch.
