TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETYOn behalf of the Tocqueville Society Council, we wish to personally thank each of you as members of the Tocqueville Society for your dedication and generosity to the greater good of York County. We knew going into the 2018 Campaign that this was a year of transition for United Way and we were proud to lend our support to ensure that the Alexis de Tocqueville Society remained a cornerstone of generous support.

As a Cabinet, we believe a larger and more engaged Tocqueville Society will help United Way of York County serve more people and pursue and fulfill its goals of making York County a community where children, individuals and families thrive. However, our Cabinet is only as strong as the Society as a whole, and it will be incumbent on all of us to work together to reignite the passion for the Tocqueville Society and generate the interest and value in new membership.

We were thrilled to welcome seven new members this year, who collectively bring a diverse array of experience, talent, and passion. If you haven’t had a chance to meet our new members yet (their names are highlighted in our membership list), please reach out and congratulate them on making such an important and worthwhile investment.

We also need to recognize all of our dedicated returning members who continue to make the commitment to give back at this level. Your annual support allows United Way to provide a stable base upon which to do their great work. By making the commitment to invest in our community at the Tocqueville level, you are sending a clear message that you are committed to York’s success.

Our final thank you goes to our fellow Tocqueville Society Cabinet members — it has been an honor to work alongside such dedicated community builders. We look forward to continuing to blaze a trail in our community that connects philanthropists to the impact they envision for a strong community.

LEADERSHIP GIVINGFor the past four years I have volunteered to serve as the Chair of United Way’s Leadership Giving Council because I know the important role that Leadership Giving plays in the success of the annual campaign. As the landscape of employee campaigns continues to change – with more companies becoming national or global brands that no longer have the ability to make decisions on a local level – Leadership Giving continues to provide a pathway to growth.

In 2018, we continued to see an increase in the number of Leadership Givers, and in addition to all the returning Givers, we welcomed 148 new donors into the First Capital Club. Of our 1,173 members, 539 individuals generously increased their giving.

As a Council, we are thrilled to see York continue to answer the call to invest into our community through United Way. I am proud to share that this year, longtime Leadership Giving Council member Thom Conley has agreed to step into the role of Chair. Please join me in congratulating him and supporting him as he works to continue to grow this vital group of donors. Although my time as Chair is coming to an end, I am always proud to stand UNITED with my coworkers, friends, and family as we work to

ensure our community has the support it needs to thrive.

I am often asked why my family supports United Way. As the incoming Chair of the Leadership Giving Council, it seemed time to reflect on this question. Life is a journey, during which we experience hills and valleys, joy and sadness. Although we are each traveling on our own life path, we do not take this journey alone. Every day our life paths cross and we have an impact on one another. My family believes that everyone is called to be a blessing to others. This could be anything from a simple smile to supporting an organization like United Way.

In a world with so many opportunities to give in so many ways, why support United Way at a Leadership Giving level? It's simple: United Way can take my family's financial support and combine it with other contributions to do more. My contributions support the great United Way partner agencies, each of which support the people in our community. This is the ultimate domino effect. My family's gift started off as a challenge presented by Bob Kinsley, but it comes down to this: We are called to be a blessing and support community.

If you are not a Leadership Giver, I would ask you to consider becoming one. And if you are already giving, I would ask that you consider: Can I give a little more?

WOMEN UNITEDWomen United has grown over the past several years into an integral part of United Way of York County and our York community. Our commitment is to unite women and demonstrate their power to effect positive change as philanthropists, role models, mentors and leaders.

I’m proud to say we accomplished quite a bit in 2018, all while supporting United Way’s vital work in our community. Our Women United membership of 370+ individuals gave more than $426,000 through the annual Campaign. We also defined our local vision, to build a stronger community by promoting literacy and lifelong learning, and installed our first Women United supported Little Free Library at the Bob Hoffman Branch of the YMCA of York and York County in Dover.

When women join hands to face some of our region’s greatest challenges, powerful change happens. In 2018, the Mentorship Committee continued its work with York College of Pennsylvania and the York County Community Opportunity Scholarship Program (YCCOSP) to mentor young women and provide advice on real-world experiences, from insurance and investing to mock interviews and positive work environments. Members volunteered painting fences at Leg Up Farm’s Able Services through United Way’s Day of Action, and during the holidays with Salvation Army for its Christmas Cheer project, wrapping items for families who could otherwise not afford any gifts for the holiday season.

We garnered inspiration and valuable lessons from the Interviews With Inspiring Women series, featuring prominent community leaders Amy Nelson, WellSpan Health; Dr. Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, FAAFP, Strategic Health Institute; and Amy Wannemacher, Glatfelter. Our Annual Meeting brought together three United Way Partner Agencies working in literacy and lifelong learning for all ages: Dr. Marie Kellett, Family First Health; Brent Toomey, New Hope Ministries, and Jessica Delp, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. Together, this panel provided powerful examples of the impact of our philanthropic giving. And, we even fit in a few laughs along the way.

This diverse group of passionate women is a tremendous example of what it means to lead the charge and inspire the change. I look forward to continuing to learn from our membership as we forge ahead in 2019.

This past year, as Chair of United Way of York County’s Emerging Leaders Society, I had a unique opportunity to talk to folks within our community about this great group of emerging leaders. There are few things that energize seasoned philanthropists more than hearing about a group of young people who are giving their time, talents and resources to an organization as important as United Way of York County. The Emerging Leaders Society’s mission is to build a stronger, caring community by engaging community leaders and United Way supporters through volunteerism, education, and networking.

As I write this in baseball season, this quote really struck me: Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.” I’m proud to say that the emerging leaders in our community have been successful in throwing something back. This year, we saw an increase in our membership to 418 members, and an increase in dollars raised to nearly $235,000. Our emerging leaders also participated in United Way’s Campaign Cabinet, Allocations Committee, Agency Review Committee and Board of Directors. Congrats to each and every member on the following pages who are helping us build a stronger, caring community!

I am especially thankful for the Emerging Leaders Society Steering Committee members who not only help organize the events for our group, but are also the boots on the ground. Our committee members are spreading the word about ELS and the importance of giving back to United Way. They are the ones recruiting their friends and coworkers to join us in a Day of Action project or a holiday volunteer opportunity. My sincerest

appreciation to these folks who care so deeply about United Way of York County and its success.

A diagnosis. An unexpected call. A heart attack. A car accident. Each of these moments in life can change your entire world within minutes. Each of those scenarios has struck the family of Leigh Ann and Matt Wilson over the years. While each was difficult, it was the car accident that shook their lives to the core.

The Wilson family is fortunate that they were able to live through a potential tragedy, but they believe there was more than luck on their side. Throughout their lives, Leigh Ann, Matt and their children Nolan and Odette have always focused on giving back to help others. Whether it is through their annual pledge to United Way of York County, Nolan making a donation to help animals, or Odette asking for books to donate to kids in need for her birthday instead of gifts, as a family they are focused on supporting the community around them.

Looking back, they couldn't help but ask themselves, was it this generosity that gave them the good karma needed to see them safely through a car accident? Was it Leigh Ann's endless hours of community service and Matt's dedication to mentoring kids as a coach that led fate to lend a hand in leading them through this potentially tragic event?

Through the ordeal, the Wilsons had every protection needed and could financially handle the unexpected bills. They were all too aware this isn't the case for everyone. When all was settled, the Wilsons decided to turn a life-shaking trial into a positive by giving back to help others become stronger.

At United Way of York County, you will often hear us refer to our Tocqueville Society members as our donors who give at the highest level. To support the community that they love, the Wilsons have always given generously. This has never been more evident than when they made the decision to become members of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society by increasing their gift to United Way following their experience.

We are grateful that the Wilsons have shared their journey with us. It is our hope that by sharing it with others, more people will be inspired by the power they have found in giving back.
