GIST 3300 BUFFALO COMMONS MAP PORTFOLIO FINAL PROJECT Example organization for Buffalo Commons - undergraduates map portfolio

- The map portfolio should be written for an educated audience, but assume the reader is not a GIS user. - Do not describe detailed ArcGIS processing steps. - Do not use the attribute table field names. - Maps must follow text description, not before. - If all maps are placed at the end, then the report needs to place the maps in an Appendix section. - Maps should fill the page area

Map portfolio must have a cover and cover page including title, your name and picture of buffalo TABLE OF CONTENTS (Optional) STUDY AREA

- Describe the spatial extent of the study area. Include the states and any other pertinent information

(e.g. number of counties and any other description of the Great Plains). - Insert your Study Area Map

VARIABLES Population Density

- Describe the variable - Describe the population density ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes and which colors are suitable/not suitable - Include a table showing the population density classification

The exact table format for Population Density is provided as an example to use for all other variables. The number of decimal places should be no more than 1 and should be appropriately rounded

Population Density Class Range Suitability Rank Description 0.1 – 2.9 5 Very Low 2.9 – 6.6 4 Low 6.6 – 15.4 3 Moderate 15.4 – 42.0 2 High 42.0 – 3879.7 1 Very High

- Include a description of the map areas referencing the classification and colors that are suitable or not

suitable - Insert your Population Density Map

Population Change

- Describe the variable - Describe the population change ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes and which colors are suitable/not suitable

2

- Include a table showing the population change classification (refer to example for Population Density) - Include a description of the map areas referencing the classification and colors that are suitable or not

suitable - Insert your Population Change Map

Land Value

- Describe the variable and why land value is important for the project budget of $20B - Describe the land value ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes and which colors are suitable/not suitable - Include a table showing the land value classification - Include a description of the map areas referencing the classification and colors that are suitable or not

suitable - Insert your Land Value Map

Percent Federal Lands

- Describe the variable - Describe the percent federal lands ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes a and which colors are suitable/not suitable - Include a table showing the classification for percent federal lands - Include a description of the map areas referencing the classification and colors that are suitable or not

suitable - Insert your Percent Federal Lands Map

Counties Adjacent to Indian Reservations

- Describe the variable and how these counties were selected (eg. why these counties have value) - Describe the ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes a and which colors are suitable/not suitable - Include a table showing the suitability classification for counties adjacent to Indian reservations

(remember this is a Boolean classification) - Include a description of the map areas referencing the classification and colors that are suitable or not

suitable - Insert your Counties Adjacent to Indian Reservations Map

Suitability Results

- Describe how the suitability process was completed (ie. Values for variables were combined and divided by 4.2. to produce a new value that can be used to classify county suitability)

- Describe the final suitability ranking (which value is least/most suitable) - Type of classification method used to create the map - Describe the classes and which colors are suitable/not suitable - Include a table showing the suitability classification - Describe the map areas referencing the colors that are suitable/not suitable

- Insert your Suitability Map

Proposed Buffalo Commons Location

- Describe the proposed location(s) for Buffalo Commons. Include the states and number of counties and the cost to purchase the land in these counties. The land value must not exceed $10B in order to stay within the $20B budget. The total land value should not be less than $9.5B so there are a sufficient number of counties to create a buffalo commons.

- Include any additional text to support your chosen location - Include your final Buffalo Commons map
