PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear families,

Out of Hours School Care We are aware that this is a high need area and that one of the long day care centres is reducing this service for school aged children. A provider presented information to school council regarding the possibility of starting OHSC at Gisborne PS next year. We will provide you with further information as we work through this process being mindful that parents will need this information soon to make arrangements for next year. Yoga Next term we will be offering a five week yoga program in the BER during a lunch time. Please see the flyer in this newsletter and contact Kerri Aitken if you have any questions. Kerri is a qualified yoga instructor and Justine Elliott has kindly offered to supervise the classes. Raising Concerns. The School Council Education Sub-Committee has been working on two flyers that outline the procedures that parents can follow to raise concerns they may have and to work with the school to support their children when they have conflict with peers. This will strengthen our home/school partnership and general understanding of the school values and programs that underpin our social and emotional learning curriculum. School Council is very committed to ensuring we are all working towards the best outcomes for your children and modelling respectful communications and interactions. We need to be mindful of the time commitments of parents, as well as teachers who are supporting over 20 students and their families in their classes. The ‘Raising Concerns’ flyer is attached to this newsletter. Bully Stopper Protocols The BullyStopper protocols have been discussed at our School Council Education and Policy sub-committee and will be made available soon. These outline our classroom learning about Respectful Relationships and protocols expected of students, staff and families in relation to incidents of bullying. Car Parking After discussions regarding parking on the corner of Brantome and Howey streets, I would like to confirm that parking on the nature strips in that area, which has been common practice over previous years is still allowed, to ensure the school buses can exit safely without cars being in the way. Police and council have generally not been concerned about this practice during school pick up and drop off hours as long as the driver remains in the car, that cars move on in a timely manner and are mindful of damage done to nature strips so as not to inconvenience the local residents. Because of the nature in which a builder has approached our parents, we request that no one parks on the vacant block on the corner of Brantome and Howey Streets. I have been consulting with police and local council to follow up parking issues around the school vicinity and will clarify further recommendations as they are made.

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend.

CHALK TALK

Dear Families, It has been a busy week full of buzz and excitement around the school.

We have had Art incursions with the year 5 and 6 students participating in a Drumming session. This links in with the music program where the students will use this information and new knowledge in their music program at school.

The year 3 and 4 students were lucky to have a session with an expert where she showed them how to model and create animals and figurines using clay. The students enjoyed manipulating the clay to make their creations.

It was a buzz of excitement in the Prep area with a Special Person afternoon. The students served afternoon tea for their special visitor. Adults and students participated in games and activities together.

Bully Zero came to our school and delivered an informative session on Bullying. They discussed what bullying is, what bullying is not, what to do if they are a bystander and provided the students with strategies of what they can do if they feel they are bullied. Today the choir went to Kyneton to participate in the Beat Concert, reports suggest it was a fun and exciting experience for the students.

At our recent Education Sub-committee we discussed the Raising Concerns Procedure document that is an appendix to the Concerns and Complaints Policy. The purpose of this document is that if you have a concern, it is easy to read with steps and procedures to follow. Please find this attached to the current newsletter.

After surveying our parents, teachers and students, we have chosen our school values. These are:

Over the next term, the students will be investigating these and looking into what they mean to develop an understanding

of the expected behaviours and values at Gisborne Primary School. Thank you for your contribution into choosing our

values.

Regards, Lisa Maxwell

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Interview bookings are now open on the Sentral Parent Portal for Parent/Teacher Interviews to be held on Tuesday 19th September. (Bookings close at 12pm on Tuesday 19th September). Please do not book consecutive appointments, leave at least a 10 minute gap between interviews if you are seeing more than one teacher.

Also, please bear in mind that these are strictly 10 minute timeslots. Should you wish to discuss other matters with your child’s teacher or you feel that your conversation will require a longer time, alternate arrangements will need to be made. As we have a busy schedule, please note that arriving late may result in having a shortened time or the meeting may need to be rescheduled. If you are new to the school, you should have received a letter with details on how to register for the Sentral Parent Portal. Please do not hesitate to contact the school office if you have any problems with the registration process.

DRUMMING WORKSHOP On Monday the 4th of September, the grade 5 & 6 students enjoyed a drumming workshop with Simone Lang of Drummergirl. We learnt how to play the Djembe drums. The Djembe drums come from West Africa. We also played some games like ‘Simone says’ and learnt a little song. We all had so much fun and would love to do it again. We would like to thank Simone for coming and Mrs Kuyateh for organising it. By Immy S & Sapphy M—5A

ART INCURSION

Wednesday at Gisborne Primary School we all made adorable animal heads representing our family’s personalities. We all thought it was interesting, fantastic and awesome. We all made these totems with a block of terracotta clay. It was like play dough but hard and wet. We all used a pencil and an icy-pole stick to shape the clay into animal heads. It was quite easy for some grade 4s but hard for others. We had a look at other totems for an idea. After shaping and crafting we let them set to dry. By William P On the 6th of September Grade 4B had an art incursion in the art room. Our teacher was Chris. She taught us to make clay totems. Next we got on to making the clay totems and some people had a lot of trouble and some did not. The clay was terracotta. It was soft and hard at the same time. But overall the clay was fun to play with and everybody had lots of fun. By Jett A and Daniel B Art Incursion On the 6th of September Grade 4B went on an art incursion. We were making totems that represent our family out of clay. Chris was our instructor. She told us how to roll, make and shape the clay. After it was our turn we had to get a piece of paper, icypole stick, and some clay. Then we started. At first we had to put the clay on our thumb and mould it to the shape of our animal that we chose. The terracotta clay felt wet, squishy and weird but it was easy to handle. By Lataysha R
