YEAR 5 THESIS

At the research stage, the diagram maps out the investment and cash flow on properties across the globe.

Large- scale development and land speculation began with urbanization in America. Proprietors in Chicago and Virginia could buy land cheaply and withhold it from market, if they have sufficient capital to carry it, until rising prices brought social prestige.

Foreign investors are using London’s finest homes as real- life Monopoly pieces. A huge property grab by Chinese investors for immigration purpose is pricing UK homebuyers out of the market, whilst developers are directing more overseas sellers into the market.

The Chinese official’s overseas’ estate in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the popula places for fugitive Chinese officials to use investment, employment, family, shell compa-nies to help people establish properties overseas. “It’s the beneficial for the developer to sell it and advertise.” “You can’t imagine what the developers can do with that. Some developers in Hong Kong, they turn over the regulations, you know. ‘Oh don’t worry. You can use the roof as a corridor.’ They turn things round just like that.” - critic’s comments Taking advantage of the new rules, the developers make full use of the diagrid structure in the building, to form farming platforms, stairs, walkways, living units, long span platforms, etc, as an ideal properties for chinese people’s investment.

Dear Human Resourses Department,

Application for the Post of Architectural Assistant

I am writing to apply for the post of Architectural Assistant. I am a fresh graduate from Master of Architecture in University of Hong Kong and I completed my undergraduate study in Bartlett School of Architecture. My expected salary is between $29,000- $31,000

The nature of my degree course has prepared me for this position. In the past few years, I have been actively participating to gain knowledge in the field of architecture. I finished my high school in Brighton College to learn art and photography and the bache-lor degree in Bartlett School of Architecture to study architecture. I completed my year out with a local architectural firm, the Palmer and Turner in Hong Kong recently. I complete my master architectural degree in the University of Hong Kong. I joined a short summer course of digital modelling and fabrication organized by AA in Shanghai the year before and in New York last year which was very fruitful to me. It helps to strengthen my representational skills. I am reckoned as an active person because I like to spend my leisure time to travel and I am joining the HKU Lacrosse team and completed my profes-sional bartending certification course.

Along with the practical side to architecture, I also begin to understand and treat architecture as a sensory experience created from augmented reality. In my second year design project about memory capsule and my final year thesis, I was trying to break architecture into different elements for our better understanding. Dreams, movies and architecture are to be linked in a subtle way, as revealed in my studies of the firm, “Inception”. It is a spatial concept that derives questions in the patterning of space, art, mathematics, and philosophy. It is a very interesting idea that stimulates my feeling upon architecture.

Visiting Las Vegas and Nevada during my undergraduate study was the most impressive to me comparing with the vertical scale and chaotic complexity of Hong Kong and many Asian cities. It is a hyperreal city that constructs a televisual regime that is quickly seen. It gives me a different way to understand cities and sparks my interest for the topic of urbanism.

Learning in an architectural practice, Palmer and Turner, in my year out is a very different and special experience to me. It let me understand pragmatics and empirical building codes govern the design of building projects, making them run more practically not matter in design and installation, rather than just purely ideas and beautiful drawings in school projects. For instance, in the course of participating in the projects of Tuen Mun Sludge Treatment Facilities and a residential development in Tai Hung Road, from communication skills, reading profession-al drawings, meeting with suppliers, drawing and drafting to project administration are skills that cannot be gained at school. I feel so excited when the things that I draw on papers turn into a real building.

I believe that studying masters in HKU will endow me with knowledge and skills that I need for my future and help to build up my confidence and networking in pursuing a career in Hong Kong. My final year project is looking at speculative cities which bridges my knowledge with the

After work, I took up some short courses to learn about leather making, porcelain model making and computer software, as these would help me to improve my skills of model making and rendering. To me, architecture is a non stop pursue. I like thinking and dreaming, when I look at the painting of Thomas Cole’s Architect’s Dream, “as dreams are made on, and out little life, is rounded with a sleep.”

Working for 10 Design appeals to me because it has a good reputation and it provides excel-lent training. Your organisation produces a high-quality service. I am available for interview at any time. Thank you for taking the time to consider this application and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

With kindest regards, Ginny Chau
