Letter to the editor Get bear-aware! If you go online to search “why do bears eat hot tub covers” you will find that the insulation of hot tub covers, deep freezes, refrigerators, etc... are made from something that gives off a gas similar to the smell of an ant nest; and ants are typical food for a bear!! [“Bears associate the smell of formic acid from ant colonies with insulation made with formaldehyde that gives off formic acid as it breaks down. That insula- tion is also in refrigerators, hot tub covers, snowmobile seats, etc.” — Google search] Several hot tub covers around here have been trashed by the bear. I’m going on about this ‘cause everybody ought to be more AWARE. [So sad for] the momma bear with her two babies that were needlessly caught and shot because a neighbour had her deep freeze on an open porch, and her garden shed full of garbage! She had carelessly attracted the bear; moreover, it was the boar that trashed her shed and not the sow! — Nicola Valley resident November 1-7, 2019 Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week During BC’s first-ever Carbon Monox- ide Awareness Week, the Province urges residents to prevent buildup of the po- tentially deadly gas in their homes. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as propane, gasoline, natural gas, heating oil or wood do not burn completely in appliances & devices. It is critical to ensure fuel-burning appli- ances, chimneys and vents are properly maintained, vented as appropriate and cleaned and inspected annually. Carbon monoxide is known as “the silent killer” because it is an invisible, tasteless and odourless gas that can cause serious harm or death. According to the BC Coroners Service, there were 119 carbon monoxide poisoning deaths in the province between 2008 and 2017.
