WHAT IS A VERGER? DUTIES Presiding Bishop Michael Curry states that “the ministry of the vergers is to help lead the church in bearing witness in the world to the hospitality of God, by helping the church to be a truly hospitable place, by helping us to worship the Lord our God in dignity, in order, in truth in the church so that we can go forth to witness to that God to the world.” The verger sends assignment reminders to lay ministry participants; makes sure that all participants in a service are present, understand their roles, and are in the right place at the right time; makes sure that all the physical items needed for a service (e.g., chairs, hymnals, leaflets, microphones, candles, banners) are in place; leads processions; provides other logistical support as needed. In short, the verger serves as a stage manager to keep everything running smoothly and without distractions! HOW DO I BECOME A THURIFER? Attend the liturgical ministries retreat from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, by signing up at the front desk or emailing [email protected] no later than Friday, September 10, indicating that you want to pursue verger training.
