Welcome 2018! The Club ended 2017 with a string of successful holiday events. The halls were decked and the Clubhouse was aglow and festive, thanks to the talents and considerable efforts of the members of the Gibson Island Garden Club. Thanks to Ashley, Chef James and their staffs for planning and skillfully executing these festive and elegant events. There is much optimism for the Club in the New Year which thankfully will be my last in this position. Membership continues to grow and our financials remain robust. The quality of the culinary program has continued to rise to new heights under Chef James and his team. We now have gained considerable experience in the new Clubhouse and the renovation of the Cottages and Gibson House are proceeding along on schedule. Even though the Club is enjoying one of the most exciting periods in its ninety-eight year history, there continues to be room for improvement. With the advent of the New Year, there will be intense focus on three guiding principles:

Attention to Detail;

Commitment to Excellence; and

Superior Membership Experience As the saying goes, “if you are standing still, then you are losing ground”, so there is no time to rest on our laurels. While the past few years have been focused on renovating and replacing our facilities, 2018’s focus will be improving and

strengthening our organization and operations. During the next few weeks, the staff will be developing a Food and Beverage Manual, policies and procedures to improve training of the front of the house staff, revamping the catering operation and upgrading our operational and financial reporting. All of these efforts will lead to an improved and more consistent membership experience and provide us with more tools to more effectively and efficiently manage the Club’s operations. Although the holidays are behind us, the Club has a long list of exciting events upcoming in January and February which include: January 13 Distinguished Speakers’ Series with Governor Larry Hogan (SOLD OUT) January 14 Bingo January 21 Sunday Brunch Buffet in the Rotunda January 26 Kids’ Movie Night February 3 RdV Wine Dinner February 10 Valentine’s Dinner February 11 Sunday Brunch Buffet in the Rotunda February 16 Chinese New Year Buffet February 17 Cooking Class with Chef James February 18 Bingo February 24 Distinguished Speakers’ Series with Patty Stonesifer

Also, I urge you to pay close attention to our weekly announcements and monthly newsletters so that you can take full advantage of all the program-ming the Club has planned. The Club is no longer a quiet and sleepy place during the winter months. Table for 9 Supreme Court Food Tradi-tions & Recipes was published just before Christmas. The book is a compilation of recipes from Supreme Court Justices. The reason the book is of interest to Gibson Island is that the Club provided the author of the book, Clare Cushman, with the recipe for one of Justice Marshall's favorite dishes - Gibson Island Club Maryland Crab Soup. The recipe is prominently featured on page 58 of the book. Here is the link to the Supreme Court's gift shop where you can purchase the book if you wish: http://supremecourtgifts.org/tablefor9.aspx

I want to thank all the members who participated in the Annual Employee Christmas Fund. Christmas bonuses are an important show of gratitude to all who care for us and our Club. “There are far better things ahead than we leave behind” – C.S. Lewis. I believe this quote can serve as a mantra for the Gibson Island Club in 2018. Wishing each of you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Tennis Karen Sauers - [email protected] Happy New Year! The weather outside is pretty frightful, but we're dreaming of warmer temperatures and playing tennis! With that in mind, we have some exciting news for the tennis program! The original four hard-tru courts (the lower courts #1-4) are well past their useful life. Over the last few years it has become clear that we need to have them replaced. I am thrilled to announce that the Board has approved this project and it is underway! The entire process will take about two months. The fencing has already started coming down. Next, the retaining wall will be removed and a new one will be built. After that, new clay and posts will be installed. The clay must sit for all of March and April and then it can be leveled and striped. We are scheduled to be up and running by May 15th! I want to thank Toby Tomko, Brendan Kincaid, and Bill Reil who all worked hard this fall to make this happen quickly. And I also want to thank JW, Greg, and the Board for their support of this project. Looking forward to a great 2018 tennis season!

Our Real Estate Office Tip of the Month As we enter the 90 coldest days of the year, please be mindful to protect your house against frozen pipes that could cause catastrophic damage. The best line of defense when the house is not occupied is to turn off the main water shutoff valve and drain your pipes by turning on the fixture that is is located at the lowest point in your house. Do not rely fully on simply setting your thermostat to a higher temperature, as this will not keep the house warm in the event of a power outage. Even with your heat turned on, some pipes in an older or summer home may be located on an outside wall and are not properly insulated. It could be helpful to let your faucets drip when it is particularly cold. Please consult with a plumber to determine the best strategy for your house.

Winter is here, and your real estate office continues to be busy, even during the winter season! Interest in the Island remains strong with regular showings and buyers circling. Now is the ideal time for those of you thinking to list your home for sale to meet with our office for a confidential written market analysis. We will also prepare a suggested list of inexpensive improvements to help your house present at its best. By doing this now, your home will be ready for the spring market. We have some wonderful properties for sale in all price ranges - please see the list in this newsletter. We will spend as much time as you need going through with you all that is for sale and help you determine which property best suits your needs. We are just a phone call away and whether buying or selling, look forward to a very successful 2018.

WINTER 2018 Visit us at: www.gibsonisland.com

From the Commodore Kathy Frederick - [email protected] Ahoy! Welcome, winter. As of New Year’s Day, all boats, including the 210s, are off the moorings. The 210’s enjoyed some beautiful fall and early winter weekends on the water, mostly in light air. It’s always fantastic to see how well they move in light wind. It takes just 5 knots to hold a race. Kudos to Tom Price for increasing the coaching levels for the group, with practice starts and other drills to elevate the skills. Annual 210 Luncheon Meeting: Join us on Saturday, January 13. This luncheon is always a lot of fun and this year is expanded to include all interested in sailing - Sonars, race committee, etc. Please call the Club to make your reservation so they know how many tables to set-up for us. Thank you: A big thank you to Rick, Richard and the Boat Works crew for pulling the 210s just in time to beat the freeze. It was pretty dang cold and miserable work. Many thanks to Denver and TJ for getting the crucial mooring inspections done this season. The Squadron Board and its committees remain busy in the off season. Junior Fleet Chair Carol McDonnell continues to work with Jr. Fleet Director Scott Williamson to ensure another spectacular season on the water. And, we have good news to share with regard to our Junior Regatta! Following the success of our 2017 Regatta, which doubled as the Maryland State Championships, we have been asked to include our Jr. Regatta as a High Point event in 2018. Competitive sailors looking to place in the CBYRA season will participate in five (5) High Point events to round out their standings. Race Committee: If you have any interest in getting involved with our Race Committee, please let Chris Burnham or Carol McDonnell know. All hands are welcome no matter the experience level. It’s truly a fun day! We need volunteers for both “adult” and “junior” race events. (The GIYS is hosting a one day Race Management Seminar in April. Details in this newsletter.) Cruise Committee: Planning for our 2018 cruises has begun, with Past Commodore Mitch Koppelman stepping up to assist returning chair Bob Brudno. Please reach out with your suggestions. Mid-Winter Cruise: Saturday, February 17. Niall O’Malley will present a talk on Baltimore Maritime history and tall ships. Niall has joined our group for various cruises and races in the past, and has developed this presentation in conjunction with the Maryland Historical Society. All are welcome. Please call the Club to make your reservation. NEW – GIYS Book Group: A welcome addition to the GIYS events calendar this winter is the GIYS Book Group. Tom Price and Jim Beh are getting the ball rolling, and we hope that this nautically themed book club will continue on a monthly basis, perhaps with a hiatus during the summer months. We hope to have an online component so those who can’t make it in person, will be able to join the discussion virtually. The first meeting is Saturday, January 27, at a 12:30 PM luncheon in the Grill Room. The selected book is The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Monsarrat. Again, please call the Club to make a reservation so they know how many to expect for set-up. There are many other happenings, please keep reading your emails and announcements, and visit the Yacht Squadron area on the Gibson Island website. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. See you on the water!

Saturday, April 7 US SAILING ONE DAY RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR Hosted by Gibson Island Yacht Squadron Led by Sandy Grosvenor, USSA certified instructor

This seminar gives an in-depth look at race management and why race committees do what they do., i.e. sailing instructions, people and equipment, setting good courses with proper lines and legs, good starting sequences (and recalls), changing and shortening courses, and finishing the race. There is something here for everyone wanting to be a more knowledgeable member of the race committee, not just the PROs. This is an introductory course and NO prior experience is required. Whether your interest is running One-Design regattas or helping out with the Junior Fleet, this is a good seminar to take. FEE: $40 Includes coffee and snacks, beverages and lunch, all course materials, as well as the online test - should you wish to take it! Please do not hesitate to call Christopher Burnham, GIYS Race Committee Chairman, 301-312-0808, with any questions.

This spring, I will offer a class that should prepare you to be able to sail them safely and begin learning on your own. If you already sail, the classes will familiarize you with the specifics of these easy to sail yet delightful boats. March 17: 3-hour, on land session covering the very basics. April 28 and 29: 2-hour on-the-water sailing sessions where you will learn to handle the boats. As the season progresses, we will be sailing the Sonars every Tuesday evening and I will coach these very enjoyable evening sessions. If interested, contact Tom Price, GIYS Sailing Director email: [email protected] phone: 410 980-0837

Junior Fleet Scott Williamson, Junior Sailing Director - C: 703-395-9654 - [email protected] Hello Junior Sailing Families!

A new year offers more opportunities for junior sailors to strengthen their skills through a fun and safe summer program at Gibson Island! The 2018 GIYS Jr. Fleet Program provides sailing instruction for all levels. The curriculum is designed to fur-ther sailor confidence and experience through developing a skill set of seaman-ship, rigging and tuning, handling, safety, and boat care/maintenance.

This summer we will once again apply all of the community’s resources to develop sailors’ skill set through a variety of fun experiences on the water! Every day we will encourage each sailor’s passion for the sport, whether that’s enjoying the pleas-ures and adventures of cruising or developing a competitive edge for success on the race course.

Here are some highlights we’re developing for the summer.

Sonar Teen Sailing on Wednesday Nights.

Extended private lesson options for sailors looking for more one-on-one time with coaches!

Junior Instructor Program to offer leadership opportunities for sailors (ages 16-18).

Opportunities for day or weekend cruises on the Chesapeake.

Look for more details to follow in March!

In the meantime, I am hiring great coaches for our sailors. Some of the talent will need housing this summer. Please contact me if you can help.

Although we’re in the middle of some of the coldest winter days we’ve seen in a long time, summer will be here soon enough! Please contact me if you have any ques-tions.

See you on the water!

Our winter hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A reminder to those who visit their boats during the winter months: if your boat is in a slip we recommend that you bring a second person with you as a safety precaution. When our docks are snow covered or wet, they can become very slippery. Also, please remember that NO porta-ble heaters are permitted on your boats during the winter months. They can cause a fire on your boat if not properly attended.

Boat Works Capt. Rick Truett - [email protected]

410-255-8777 (this is a NEW number)

It may be winter, but your yacht yard is busy at work! Another season of winterization is behind us where our crew completed the steady routine of preparing engines, water systems, batteries, sails and more for the cold weather. Boat Works received 100+ boats on the hard (maximum capacity) making this another excellent year for storage at the yard. Thank you for continuing to put your trust in Gibson Island Boat Works this fall and winter. We have 100’s of smaller jobs being conducted in and around the yard, including electronic revamps, tank replacements, repowers, metal and fiberglass fabrication projects, paint jobs, etc. We do it all. We are blessed to have an incredibly broad cross-section of talented crew. There is very little we cannot do in-house, and for those things we can’t do we have excellent relationships with top-drawer subcontractors that give us (and thus you) great rates. Come check out your fellow members’ boats as large refit jobs are underway. Azucar, a Hinckley 49, was brought inside to continue its overhaul. This 1970s vessel will be brought back to its former beauty and functionality with an upgrade of its power management system, plumbing, rig, deck and haul paint, and varnish work. All of this will culminate into bringing back an exceptionally attractive vessel once again to being a head-turner in both form and function. Mavi Marmara (later to be renamed Vaporetto), a beautiful classic-lined Turkish-built boat, is undergoing a cosmetic facelift with newly stripped and refinished brightwork. She is also getting deck paint and a number of mechanical items knocked off the list. Look for this striking vessel in the spring. It has similar lines as a Hinckley 40 power boat. Winter is an excellent time to have your boat repairs, maintenance and improvements completed. Since most people are not using their boat, it is available to our technicians much more readily than during the boating season. We are essentially booked up for this winter, but if you are thinking of getting some work completed, give us a call as we often have project scope changes that allow a little flexibility in our schedule and we might be able to squeeze it in. Also, almost none of us use our boat every single week during the boating season. Consider leaving your vessel with us for a couple of weeks to complete your work list during the warm months. Often it is much easier (and cheaper) to get the work done during the warm months as we are less hampered by the weather. Please call us to schedule a “summer yard period”. Thank you all again for your faithful support of Boat Works. We cannot exist without you and I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate your business. Please come on by during the winter and say “hello”. All are ALWAYS welcome!
