Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year!!

Staff and governors at the school would like to wish all parents and pupils a Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing all pupils back at school at 8.30am on Thursday 5th January 2012. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to a number of teachers who will be leaving us at the end of December: Mrs Frampton will be taking up the post of Head of English at Ricards Lodge.

Mr Ward will be moving to The Limes College as Head of KS4.

Mr Summers is moving to the north of England to take up a post as Head of PE at

Joseph Swan School in Gateshead. Mrs Spafford is moving to Houston, Texas.

Mr Cleverdon is moving to Seattle.

Miss Shuter is moving to New Zealand for a year.

We wish them all well for the future and every success in their new posts.

With staff moving on, this will inevitably mean changes to many pupils’ timetables. New timetables will be issued in January.

Just some of the traditional Christmas hampers prepared for the elderly in the local community. Our pupils showed incredible generosity this year bringing in thousands of items and making up dozens of Christmas hampers for the elderly.

Our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils celebrated the end of their first half-term with a Halloween Disco. They enjoyed dancing, making pumpkins and apple bobbing and certainly got into the ‘spirit’ of the season in all sorts of ghoulish costumes! Thanks to the Senior Student Team for their organisation of the event.

Think Master Chef is only for pros? Then think again! On Thursday 1st December, the MAG&T (More Able, Gifted and Talented) of year 9 went head to head in a battle of cooking skills. Only one could win. It was a fierce battle, how can you cook a main course and dessert for under £10? Impossible you say?! No! Everyone managed it, but in the end the winners were Rebecca Smith (9G) and Irene Kabana (9L) with their chilli con carne and homemade cheesecake. In second place was Jack Hobbs (9L) and Henri Calderon (9G) with their chicken wrapped in bacon with vegetables and a fruity banana split covered in melted chocolate. Other memorable items of food were a delightful sponge cake with frosted flowers, a lovely nutella chocolate cake and a mouth-watering tiramisu.

We made a creamy carbonara with carefully selected slices of bacon and for dessert, a cool vanilla ice cream platter with finely grated chocolate and honeycomb on top. But…we still didn’t win! However it was an enjoyable evening for all and we all came away with something (and we do not just mean food).

Sutton Youth Parliament

Elections The Sutton Youth Parliament elections took place in November. There were a record 24 candidates

from a range of schools running this year, and a total of 8,700 students votes were received from

schools across Sutton.

Our four candidates performed really well, with all 4 pupils falling in the top 11.

Emily Bennett (10S), Henri Caulderon (9G), Jack Hobbs (9L) or Sarah Nedjai (9H) have been

remarkable representatives for Glenthorne High School, and deserve congratulations for their

courageous efforts in putting themselves forward and running for Sutton Youth Parliament. They

have promised to remain involved in Youth Parliament and make their contributions towards youth

voice in Sutton. Well done!

When Mrs Jarrett asked us if we wanted to run for Sutton Youth Parliament this year, I

speak for all of us, when we say were unsure. After we had entered our manifestos, we

waited for the long process of voting.

Two weeks of promotion and it was all over, there was nothing more we could do.

Sarah, Jack, Henri and I all took part in the debate before the announcement and

although none of us had won we were very happy we had been placed high up on the

“leader board”.

All of us are now members of the Sutton Youth Parliament and we love going to the

meetings and discussing our ideas. We are happy to take any ideas from anyone; please

just come up to us at school or email us.

In early October, Henri Calderon, Sarah Nedjai and Emily Bennett and I

were asked if we’d like to run to be the MYP for Sutton Youth Parliament,

we immediately said yes as we thought this would be a fantastic thing to get

into.

Youth Parliament is an organisation run throughout England to get young

people involved in politics and, most importantly, to get their views across.

That week, we all got our manifestos written and submitted and we were

in; we were now candidates to be the MYP of Sutton for 2012! After this,

we went round to forms so that everybody knew who we were and what

we’d change if we were voted in. The four of us also spoke in KS3 and KS4

assemblies, in front of over 500 pupils and teachers, which as you can

imagine was quite nerve-racking!

On the 24th November, we all went over to the Sutton Life Centre to take

part in an inter-school debate, we were meant to go against Wallington

Boys but they dropped out so instead a Sutton Youth Parliament team took

over. I think the debate went well for our first one!

After this, the moment we had all been waiting for came: the announcement

of who had won! Unfortunately, none of us won the election with Anna

Clark becoming the MYP for Sutton and Anna Mullaney as the deputy. We

were all a bit disappointed but we know that it was the taking part that

counts and we are all going to stay fully involved with Sutton Youth

Parliament as it is a great thing to get into!

Snakes in School!! On Friday 18

th November 2011, DH11 was full of excited pupils all getting ready to meet Mr

Glover’s pet snakes. The event was put on to help raise money for Children in Need. The snakes included two corn snakes, Bishop, 8, and Cracker, 3, as well as a milk snake, Duke, 5. All three snakes are completely harmless and are extremely cuddly as many pupils got to find out. Duke (male), comes from a northern region of Mexico called Sinaloa. The corn snakes (both female) come from the East coast of the USA. All three eat 1-2 mice every fortnight. They are extremely easy to care for. All they need is a Vivarium (wood tank with glass front) with a heat source such as an incandescent light bulb at one end. Some pupils were very apprehensive about stroking or holding the snakes but those that gave it a go, were pleasantly surprised about how placid and smooth they were (not slimy like some think!!) As a result of the day, we made £30 to go towards Children in Need and our eyes were opened as to how interesting snakes can be! Mr Glover

On Thursday 24th November, we held our second ever Year 7 & 8 Swimming Gala. It took place at Cheam Swimming Baths with over 80 pupils. The PE department from GHS and Miss Cook organised the event. Many Year 8 students took part in the following events; front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke as well as the 4 x 100m relay.

There were some outstanding performances particularly from Jake Cadence in 8H who fought off competition to win the backstroke event and made an important contribution

to his form’s relay.

Mr Berry highlighted how well Jake swam and compared him to a fish!! Mr Berry was the announcer and commentator for the evening and spoke with students and teachers throughout the races and afterwards, which made it really feel like a really professional event.

There were some tight decisions made by the PE staff, particularly in the boys’ front crawl which was very close. Also some brilliant swims, by Sarah Blaha and Rafael Almeida. Rafael swam in most events and got really involved.

The girls also did very well with some great performances by Katie Hutchinson, Katie Bowen and Olivia Bagshaw in particular.

A special mention also goes to Gemma Harris in Year 7 who performed outstandingly, winning all her events

It was a really enjoyable evening as we got the chance to swim and support our friends in our forms and others!! Our friends in the gallery supported us too with banners and 8L won the cup for the second year running and 7G won from year 7!

Girls’ Under 13 Football: Sutton Cup

Mr Summers and Miss Djemil took us to this tournament on Friday 4th November at the Goals Soccer Centre in North Cheam. This was a great chance for the girls in Years 7 and 8 to show how well they have been training; to play competitively and also to showcase their skills and meet some of the other footballers from Sutton.

With versatile player, Samantha Mills, as captain and some enthusiastic players, we knew we would have the energy to get all the way to finals.

We were straight in with our first game against the reigning champions, Overton Grange, and in the first minutes we were already down 2- 0. However, we really fought hard and pushed out from defence with some lovely tackles by Samantha Bennett, and with Ellen Jupp and Maisie Kelly teaming up well, we were able to get 2 goals past Overton with one being a little chip over the keeper from Ellen and the second from Maisie. Glenthorne then went on to draw level at 2-2 and with some better defending and goal keeping by Maria Reid we managed to end the game with a draw.

Our next game was against Greenshaw and it proved to be another tight game; this time with Samantha Mills in goal and Mia Baldock in defence we hoped we could beat our rivals. Ellen immediately got us our first goal but then we were unfortunate to concede a penalty which Greenshaw slotted past our keeper. However, Ellen managed to get us back into the game with another goal, set up beautifully by Maisie Kelly. The final score was 2-1 to Glenthorne and our first win of the tournament.

After a little break and some careful observing of the other teams, we knew that Cheam would be tough com-petitors. Although Samantha Bennett and Maria Reid teamed up in defence and put in some great tackles, we were unlucky not to score and the game ended 1-0 to Cheam. With the ball just going over the line!

Nonsuch, we had observed, were also going to be very tough and had not yet conceded any goals., however we managed to put a lot of pressure on them this time with Lauyrn Sherwood pushing up into midfield and getting in some good passes to Maisie and Ellen. Unfortunately, Nonsuch were very fast and were able to get a lot of possession and in the end, although Ellen scored a penalty, the final score was 2-1 to Nonsuch.

Our final game was against Carshalton Girls and was one we knew we would have to win in order to stand a chance of getting into the semi finals. Carshalton got the ball early but we spaced ourselves out well and stuck to our positions and Lauren Short easily ran past players and through the defence. Maisie Kelly scored the first goal and although we did concede a goal, Mia Baldock improved her game so much, by getting in many good tackles to get the ball up to Ellen who then scored Glenthorne’s final goal. The final score was 2-1 to Glenthorne; we were just a couple of points from getting into the semi finals but are looking forward to our next tournament! The top goal scorer for Glenthorne was Ellen Jupp with 6 (including scoring the only

goal against the finalists Nonsuch. The player of the tournament for Glenthorne – Samantha Bennett (fantastic in defence, great determination and very supportive of the newer and younger players in the team). By Ellen Jupp

Glenthorne Cross Country Champions—6 Years In A Row

On Thursday 3rd November Glenthorne took a team of their fittest runners to compete in the annual

Borough Cross Country Championships.

The event took place on Roundshaw Playing Fields giving a challenging course to all competitors.

Glenthorne took home the winning trophy for the 6th year in a row as overall winners of the co-educational schools. All pupils demonstrated outstanding determination, but there were some

exceptional performances from Daniel Haughton in Year 8 competing in the Year 8 & 9 category taking

7th place, and Ella Shears in Year 10 competing in the Year 10 & 11 category coming 4th. The Year 10

& 11 girls’ team should also be congratulated on coming joint 2nd overall against some extremely tough

competition.

A very big well done to all pupils who took part giving Glenthorne High School yet another trophy for

the cabinet!

Sports News Year 7 Inter-Form Dodge Ball Competition

Well done to the pupils who participated in the Year 7 Inter-Form dodge ball competition on Wednesday 7th December. The final was between 7G and 7N. 7N were very organised with a full team and substitutes, 7G only had 3 players but were still able to get to the final! Mark Hughes, Keiran Mezroui and Oliver Beckenham. The overall winners were 7N. Well done to Lucy Everton, Hallie Holder, Jack Baker, Tommy White, Adam

Gardiner and Jack Archer. In addition, £10.00 was raised for the British Heart Foundation. Thank you to all the pupils who took part and contributed to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Trampolining The under 16 Trampoline squad had their trampoline competition in November against Carshalton High School for Girls. The squad, Jodie Moore, Lauren Moss, Faye Sawyers, Danielle Swann and Natalie Rumbelow all competed to a high level achieving personal best scores in their individual routines and all gaining good scores in the compulsory routine. Well done!

Year 7 Rugby Well, what a start to the season we have had. We won the Glenthorne Super 10s and have taken that enthusiasm and skill into our league matches where we remain unbeaten. We have been playing some excellent free-flowing Rugby and with ball in hand there aren’t many teams that will stop us. Our recent

results speak for themselves; beating Cheam 25-5 and Edenham 24-17. We have no problems scoring, particularly through Billy Vanstone and Ellis Mottley and with Ellis and Alfie Marshall sharing the kick duties we have the making of a very strong side. If you are interested in joining this winning side, then please come to training on Tuesdays after school.

Year 8 Netball

So far this year, the Y8 girls’ netball team have been training and working hard in all matches to improve their skills and performance throughout their matches. Some matches we played were; 20/9/11: Glenthorne vs Greenshaw=10:3 Lost 29/9/11: Glenthorne vs Carshalton Girls=4:4 Draw Every girl has worked her socks off and performed to her best ability trying to concede the least number of goals scored against us as possible. We have lost a few but if we keep putting in the hard work and improving every match, hopefully the results will go our way. Katie Bowen

The Year 9 netball team has made a fantastic start to the year being undefeated, putting us top of the league! As Captain of the team, I am very pleased with these results and know that all the girls involved are too. Year 7 Netball The year 7 girls’ netball team unfortunately lost their first two matches against Carshalton Girls and Overton, but then won the next match having a strong goal-keeper and goal defence; Grace and Ashleigh made sure that their arms were high, pressuring their shots so they scored 4 goals. After Jess had been called up for footwork, she soon got the hang of it and now makes sure she only takes two steps whilst catching the ball. Georgia and Jessica’s shooting has been fantastic, ensuring that their arms are high and they take their time shooting. The whole team are now improving in defence; they are making sure they are one metre away with their arms high, communication is better and the whole team is passing to everyone. The results so far this term for Year 7 are played 6, Won 2 , Drawn 1 , Lost 3.

Post from the P.E. Department

Item 1: The P.E. Department strongly recommends that all pupils wear football boots when they have lessons

on the field during the winter months. The grass can become wet, frosty and muddy, which can be dangerous if

pupils do not have the appropriate footwear. We always do our best to prevent any accidents occurring but

would appreciate your support with this.

Item 2: ‘Sick or Fit, Bring your Kit’ has become the slogan adopted by the P.E. Department this year. It means

that all pupils should bring their kit to the lesson, even if they have a medical note excusing them from physically

participating. Pupils can then act as referees, officials and coaches and still actively contribute to the lesson. If

there are extenuating circumstances, for example a pupil has their leg in a cast, we will make an exception.

Once again, thank you for supporting the P.E. Department.

Do you have any unwanted items of Glenthorne uniform?

Has he grown out of his sweatshirt? Is her poloshirt too small?

Members of the Parents’ Council are collecting unwanted items of uniform in the hope of setting up a second hand uniform stall. Please pass any items of Glenthorne uniform to the school reception and mark for the attention of Mr Platt. The second hand uniform stall is hoping to start at Year 7 Parents’ Evening in February.
