    centlycompletedthreeexcingyears. In

    thesethreeyears,wehaveevolvedfrom

    simpletrekstobouldering,rappelling,

    raing,paragliding,scubadivingwell,

    thelistcangoon.

    Westartedwithmeetupsonweekends,

    buttheenthusiascresponsefromthe

    membershasinspiredsomeofourorgan

    iserstoconductmeetupsonjustanyday

    oftheweek. Howelsedoyouexplainthe

    factthat,atthe meofpreparingthis

    document,thecalendarofAugust

    showed63meetups,translangtomore

    than2meetupsaday! Howelsedoyou

    explainthefactthatameetupisfull

    withinanhourofitsannouncement!Well,therehavealsobeenin

    stanceswhenmembershavesetanalarm

    towakeupinordertorespondtoameet

    upbeforesomeoneelsedoes. Suchisthe

    popularityoftheclubandsuchisthe

    needforadventureinthisstressedworld.

    Wehavedefinitelycomealongwayfrom

    wherewestarted! Thepopularityof

    GHACisfurtherevidentfromthefactthat

    wearea5000memberfamilyto

    day. GHACanditsacvieshavere

    ceivedalotofposiveaenoninthe

    printaswellastheelectronicmedia.

    WiththisspecialIndependenceDayissue,

    werelaunchourNewsleerinanew

    avatar.Whileyougettoseesomeofthe

    changesrightawayinthisissue,theresa

    lotmoretowatchoutforintheforth

    comingissues.

    athlontookeveryonebysurprise.But

    then,DeepamSirisamanwhobelieves

    intheartofthepossible.So,tookshape

    theGreatHyderabadAdventureClub

    (GHAC)TriathlonandMiniTriathlon.

    Asiswithanynewventure,thedetailing

    oftheeventtooksome metosinkin.

    Thelogiscswasthebiggestchallenge

    andDeepamSirsexperiencecamein

    handy. Themeetupwascleartothelast

    detailandsoontheRSVPsstarted.The

    cyclesweresourcedforthosewhodid

    nothavethemandlastminuteclarifica

    onswereanswered.Finally,theDDay

    arrivedandwehad25parcipantsfor

    theTriathlonand20 parcipantsforthe

    MiniTriathlon.

    Atprecisely7.15am,thegroupofcyclists

    whoformedthefirstpartofthetheTri

    athlonwereflaggedoffandtheyped

    alledontotheirfirstreporngpoint9.5

    kmsawayatCineplanetontheMedchal

    highway.Amongtheparcipantswere

    seniorIPSofficer,RajivTrivediandhis

    sonPrasoon.Alsointhefraywasfitness

    trainerFaiyazinhisfullprofessionalcy

    clingare,pedallingawayfuriously.

    AtthefirstreporngpointCineplanet,

    thecyclistscollectedtheirtokenand

    rodebacktotheirfinishingpoint,Neni

    HitechClubontheOldAirportRoad.The

    idyllicstretchofroadfromBowenpally

    crossroadsalongtheOldAirportRoad

    wastheidealplacefortheTriathlon.

    Soon,thefirstofthecyclists

    trundledintotheclubandre

    portedtotheGHACmarshals.

    Afiveminutebreatherand

    theyweresoonontheirway

    joggingalongtheOldAirport

    Roadtowardsthecentralex

    ciseofficenearBowenpally

    crossroads,thefirstreporng

    pointforjoggers.AUturn

    thereandthejoggersheaded

    backtotheclub.Thatwasthe

    endoftwoofthethreeevents

    oftheTriathlon.A15minute

    changeover meandsoontheparci

    pantsdivedintothepooltodothe25

    lapsofthe50meterpool.Onecouldsee

    thesheereffortputinbypeoplelike

    RajivTrivedi,whoafewmonthsago

    swamthePalkStraitsconnecngSri

    LankaandIndia.Soon,onebyoneallthe

    parcipantscompletedtheirswimming

    roundsandexitedthepool.

    ForthosewhotookpartitintheMini

    Triathlon,itwasashorteryetrewarding

    me.

    Allparcipantswhocompletedthethree

    eventsoftheTriathlonearnedthem

    selvesacerficateandaGHACcap.

    Buoyedbythesuccessofthisevent,

    GHACisplanningtoconductmoreTriath

    loneventsinthemonthstocome.

    WeallmetatBegumpetrailwaystaonandtookatraintoPune,andfromthere

    toBelpada.Despiteatyreburst,thejour

    neybyaminibuswasamazing.Eyeing

    beaufulmountains,weenjoyedevery

    momentofitanditwashardforusto

    keepoureyesofftheunfoldingscene.

    Weatherwasdisnctlycold.

    Trekking from Savarna Village

    Westartedtrekkingfromthemountain

    ousareatoreachBelpada.Thelongroad

    journeyhadsappedourenergy,andnow

    wewere

    carrying

    our

    heavy

    traveling

    bags.Thevillagerswerekindenoughto

    rentusaroom,wherewespentournight

    speculangaboutourjourneyinthe

    morning.

    Wetriedtocatchsomesleep,butwere

    unableto.Reason?Wewereallinone

    roomwithtwostrongbuffaloeskeeping

    aneyeonus.Well,thatwasnottheonly

    reason. Itwasdifficulttosleepwiththe

    mountainsinthebackgroundandconsid

    erablylongwaterbodybesideourroom.

    Connuousgrunngandcroakingof

    frogsmadeusthinkofthepossibiliesofsnakesamblingaround.Despitethelack

    ofelectricity,someofushadasound

    sleep. Itwasoneofthebestofthebeau

    fulscarynightsIeverspent.

    Wewokeupby5amwithanaimtoex

    ploreNalichiVaat. Itwasabeauful,but

    dangeroustrekthatweeversetouton,

    lldate.NalichiVaatisaroutebetween

    twomountainsandisconnectedwith

    rockpatches.Itwasadifficulttrekwith

    sffwindandasteadydrizzle,accompa

    niedbybouts

    ofthunder.

    We

    managed

    tocrossfivebigpatches.Amongthem,

    fourpatchespresentedabigchallenge

    forus,butweclimbeduphigherand

    higher.Imustsaythattherockclimbing

    atNalichiVaatisforprofessionalrock

    climbersandnotforbeginners.

    The first Patch 10 high

    Thefirstrockpatchwasperpendicular

    andCshapedandwasaround10 high.

    Sailesh,Krishna,RangaandIclimbedup.

    Therockwasslipperywithnoproper

    grabs,andtoaddtothedifficultyofclimb

    ing,water

    was

    flowing

    down

    inour

    direc

    on.Despitethis,wemanagedtoclimb

    upandpulledtheotherguysupwiththe

    helpofarope.

    Second Patch 15 high

    Thesecondrockpatchwasataheightof

    15 .Thoughwecouldfindgrabs,they

    werenotreliable.Theycameoffatcertain

    placesandterrifiedthoseofuswhowere

    watchingfrombelow.Imanagedtoclimb

    upandgivebelaytootherstohelpthem

    comeup.Fromthesecondrockpatchto

    thirdrockpatch,wehadtotakeaUturn

    attheedgeofthecliff. Onesmallmistake

    couldresultina1500 slide.

    Third Patch 18 high

    Thethirdpatchwasthemostdifficultone,

    aswewerealreadyataheightthatwould

    scareeventhebravestofsouls.Themostdifficultpartoftheclimbingwastofirmly

    aachourselveslongitudinallytotheslip

    perysurfaceoftherock,whichseemedto

    bepullingusoffeveryminute,threatening

    tothrowusdown.Holdingonfirmlyand

    movingon,wereachedthefourthpatch,

    whichdidn'tseemtobedifficulttoreach,

    aswewereallsanguineofsuccess,having

    crossedthreebighurdlesonourwayto

    thetop.

    throwing us away

    Thewaytothefihrockpatchwasune

    ven.Moreover,theweatherwasnotsup

    porveandthewindwasfierce.We

    werealreadyataheightof1800 .Itwas

    allfoggyandwewereallwetand

    red,butwedidn'tgiveup. Krishnaand

    Iclimbedupwithourluggage.

    Reachingthetopofthefihpatch,we

    wereunabletofirmlykeepourfeetto

    getherasthewindwasblowingsffand

    thefogblindedus.Itwasdifficulttosee

    orhearanything.Iwasthinking howto

    pulluptheotherguys,whenluckilyIfoundabolt,whichmusthavebeenearli

    erfixedbysomeprofessionalclimbers.I

    edaropearoundmybellyandwastry

    ingtopullupalltheotherswhowere

    strugglingtocomeup,whenallofasud

    den,windaccompaniedbyrainlashed

    us.AfewrockchipsfellonJyothiand

    Wetrekkedafewkilometerstoreach

    Harishchandragad.Thebeautyofnature

    grossed.Weadmiredeverybeauful

    flowerwesawthere.Thewindblowing

    ingustsmagnezedusmore,withfog

    envelopingourway.Ittookus13hours

    tocompletelycrossNalichiVaatand

    reachHarischandragad,whereweex

    ploredhistoricalhillfortandcaves.We

    spentthenightinacaveatopthehill.

    Earlymorningthenextday,westarted

    trekkingaroundthecavearea.Walking

    forafewminutes,weagaincameacross

    arockpatch.Itwasasmallnarrowpath,onwhichrailingwasfixed,thattookusto

    Khireshwar. Analyzingtheheightwe

    wereabovefromtheground,wetook

    greatcarewhilemovingon.Itwasdiffi

    cult,asthewholeareawascoveredwith

    fog.Finally,amillionthankstoGHACfor

    makingitpossibletorootoutthefear

    factor.

    AdventureClub(GHAC)whichhelpyou

    fulfillyourdreamsofanykindofadven

    ture.

    In2009,somethingwonderfulhappened

    whenafriendsuggestedtolookupHyder

    abadAdventure

    Club,

    now

    known

    as

    GreatHyderabadAdventureClub,which

    wasplanningadaytrektoBhongirand

    Yadigirigua.Ijoinedthemanditcame

    outtobeanamazingtrekanda

    chancetomeetlotsofyoungfriends.

    Itwasagreatbeginningandthat

    dreamrunhasbeenonsince.Then

    camethefirsteveroutstaontrekof

    GHACtoMasinagudiwithRajanPa

    telastheorganizer.Onknowingthat

    myagewas50+years,hecomment

    ed

    in

    a

    lighter

    vein,

    "We

    dont

    carry

    baggages".Aer30+plustreks(easy

    aswellasdifficult)spanning3

    years, Igraduatedfrombeingabag

    gagetobecomingSirjioraFastnotsoold

    Man.Ihaveenjoyedgrowingwithevery

    experienceinGHAC.

    Whynot?Thecrowningglorywasthe

    successfulcompleonofEverestBase

    CampTrekinMay2011,adreamasoldas

    38yearscomingtrue.IthankGHAC,forall

    thewonderfulTreksandsomeverynice

    friendswhomIconsiderbrothersandsis

    tersofthewild.Iwouldlovetoname

    them,butthelistwouldruntoolong.

    MyjourneywithGHACfromasingleday

    trektoaheroic14daytrektoEBChas

    beenanamazingexperience. Ievolved

    Physically,MentallyandEmoonal

    ly. Everytrekcompletedfuelledthefire

    ofdesireandencouragedaempngthe

    EBC. Thoughtrainedlastyearalso,Iwas

    notconfidentofmyphysicalprepared

    ness.Ibackedofffromaempngthen.

    Thisyear,despitebusinesscompulsionsandotherpersonalengagements,myfam

    ilysupportedmeintakingupthechal

    lenge.Thatgavemethewilltotrainseri

    ouslyandpreparemyself,physicallyand

    mentallytoagoodshape.Ineededto

    preparemuchmorethantheotheryoung

    ermembers,mostlytoovercomethewor

    ryofgengaltudesicknesswhichcan

    stopyourprogressandcanonlymeana

    walkbacktoloweraltudes.Thehard

    workwhiletrainingpaidoff.Iwasoneof

    thevery

    few

    members

    who

    did

    not

    suffer

    altudesicknessoranyotherproblemsof

    exeronorphysicalpain.Instead,mostof

    the mes,Iwasthefirsttofinisheveryleg

    ofourdailyclimbsandremainedthe

    paceseer. Thiskeptmemovatedand

    chargedforallthe14days. Itrulyen

    joyedtheluxuryofbeingfiteventhough

    agewasneverinmyfavourascompared

    totheotherteammembers.

    TheEverestBaseCamp(EBC),asper

    Google,isoneofthebestandtoughest

    treks.Itinvolveswalkingandclimbing120kmthroughthemajescHimalayasto

    reachaheightof15,600feet.Itisatthe

    footoftheMountEverest,thehighest

    peakintheworldontheNorthface

    (Nepal).ReachingEBCwasanoutofthe

    worldexperiencewhichcannotbecom

    paredtoanyotherhappinessinlife.The

    floraandfaunaissomesmerizingand

    beauful,thatattheendofthe10hour

    walkandgainingaltudesof500meters

    daily,yousllcherishthosemomentsof

    watchingpicture

    perfect

    nature.

    The

    soundofbellsontheyaks,thechirpingof

    beaufulbirdsandthewhistlingofthe

    chilledhardbreezehingyourfaceisthe

    onlycompanionyouhaveduringthose

    longwalks.Thoughwithagroup,youare

    walkingorclimbingalonebecauseevery

    stepofyourshastobemeasuredand

    placedcarefullytoavoidanymajorfall,

    whichcanbefatalifcareless.Forme,this

    journeywasoneofbestmomentsofmy

    life,whereIcouldlookwithin,withcon

    nuouschanngofGayatrimantraand

    rejuvenatethespiritualbondingofselfwiththenature.

    Thenighthaltswerewellcherishedwith

    thegi ofNepalihospitalityinthe

    lodges,whichwerelocatedonthehills

    insmallhamlets,withonlysolarpower

    tosupportmoderndaytechnology.

    Wenevermissedourphones,televi

    sion,internetandalltheothermodern

    gadgets.Jokesandrecallingthedays

    experienceswouldmakeuslaughour

    waythroughthe rednessandpain,if

    any.Somememberssufferedacutealtudesickness,includingourgroup

    leaderaverygoodfriend,AliRazvi,my

    roompartner.Hevomitedandvisited

    thecornermorethan4 mesonenight,

    yethehadthecourageandthewillto

    starttheclimbthenextday.Priyanka

    Singh,ayounggirlofourteam,vomited,

    experiencedhallucinaons,sufferedbad

    appete,butconnuedthejourneyand

    finallysucceeded.Fewothershadthe

    samedifficulty,buttheywentaheadand

    completed

    the

    expedi

    on.

    Icangoonandon,butletmehavethe

    treasuresomeofthosewonderfulmo

    mentsasverypersonalmemoriestobe

    toldtomygrandchildrenandfriendswho

    mayhavethepaence.

    Birdsarebeaufulandverylively.Thereasontheyinterestmanypeopleisbe

    causeofthedynamismtheybringtothe

    naturallife.Yes,theyaretheeasiestob

    servablemoving,andfeelingcreaturesin

    thenaturalworld.Youneednotdiveinto

    waterorventureintothewildtoseea

    birdfly.Althoughtheyareveryshy,prob

    ablybecausetheydon'twearathing,

    theyneedtobeveryacvetosurvive.

    Formostbirds,camouflageisthebiggest

    defensewhileperseveranceistheirbiggestweapon.Theirfeaturesofadapta

    onaremucholderthanusandtheir

    behaviorprimive makingthemabeau

    fulpieceoflivinghistory.

    Toappreciatebirds,wemustbeableto

    takeinterestinthem.Aerafewdaysof

    lookingatthemasanilliterate,Iwanted

    toknowthenameofthebirdalongwith

    whichIreadsomeofitsbehavior.This

    startedwithaverycommonbird,the

    CaleEgret,asitstartedgainingbreedingplumage.Iamsurethatifyou

    stoppedlookingaroundandactuallystart

    observingthings,atonepointyou'llstart

    observingbirdsandenteranewworld

    fromwhereyouarenow.Youwillbe

    surprisedathowmanybirdsyoucansee

    aroundasmallpondoralake Ididn't

    knowthatIwaslookingat40+

    aroundasmalllakenearmy

    house llIbroughtmyfirstbook.

    Asvisualidenficaonincreases,

    itbecomesakindofKBCquesonnaire,whereeveryqueson

    raisesalotofdoubts.Younever

    knowwhetheryoucanfreezein

    onthatornot,especiallywith

    theWarblersandDucks.Afe

    malePurpleSunbirdlooksiden

    caltothePurplerumpedSun

    bird,exceptforablackpatch

    fromitsbeaktotheeye,whichisbarely

    noceable youwilldisliketheenre

    femalebrandofbirds(theyareusually

    boringandfrustrang,althoughyou

    don'tneedtoshopwiththem!).Now,

    you'llenjoybirdinggroupsalotaswe

    guessnamesandarguealot.Ihadgreat

    joyateverycaptureinthecam

    eraandforthefirst me,Icould

    seetheworldaroundmeina

    greatlotofdetail tothepoint

    ofthesizeofaWarbler'seyeup

    tothewingspanofaPur

    pleHeron.

    Asweentertheforests

    andthewoodsmore,vis

    ualidenficaongiveswaytovocalidenfica

    on.Thevoicesaremixed

    therearealarms,mangcalls,

    breedingcalls,communicaoncalls

    andsomemore,butthespectrum

    isn'tlarge.Theeyesthathavewid

    enedtoseethelargerworld,now

    shuttolettheearsgraspadistant

    callbeer.Icanhearabird'ssound

    hauntmebecauseIcouldn'tidenfyit

    whatmore,wehaveverylileapparatus/bookstoaccuratelydecipherbird

    sounds.Thatmeansthatalthoughweare

    abletohearalotofthelanguagefroma

    birdbrain,weareslldumbatit.

    Alongwithvisualidenficaonandvocal

    idenficaon,behavioralinterestsgrow.

    SomebirdsliketheRedventedBulbul

    aresocommonthatwetendtoneglect

    them,butweknowverylileoftheir

    behaviorthough.Forexample,Ihaven't

    yetseenithuntagardenlizard,although

    itissurelypossible wouldn'tthatbeasight!!IwanttocounttheeggsinaRed

    waledLapwing'snesttodeterminethe

    duraonofthemonsoonthisyear,and

    seehowaBlackKitereactstoaBlack

    Drongochasingit(we'veseenitbeing

    chasedawaybyParrots,Treepiesand

    Crows).

    Thecuriosityconnues,sodoesourwan

    dering.Newavenuesareopen,butfasci

    naonremainsthesame itmayneeda

    lilesunbathtoacvateagain,butthenI

    can'tstoplookingaroundandsmilingalotaerIstartedbirding.Withsome

    birding,Istartedenjoyingmorningwalks,

    treksandfree memore.Idon'tknowif

    mybirdingisgoingtosavetheworld,

    reduceglobalwarming,etc.butitsurely

    makesmeenjoythenaturethatisle

    aroundmeinabeerway,withoutdis

    turbingit,ofcourse.
