BALLSThe first balls specifically made for golf were actually fashioned from wood. But in 1618 the feather golf ball or ‘Featherie’ was introduced. This was a handcrafted ball made with goose feathers tightly packed into a horse or cow hide sphere. Due to its superior flight characteristics, the featherie remained the standard ball for more than two centuries.

In 1848, the Rev. Dr Robert Adams Paterson invented the gutta-percha ball (or guttie). The guttie was created from dried sap of a Sapodilla Tree. Accidentally, it was discovered that defects in the sphere from knicks and scrapes of normal use, could provide a ball with a truer flight than a pure sphere. Thus, makers started creating intentional defects in the surface by hammering the ball to give it an evenly dimpled shape which would cause the ball to have a more consistent ball flight.

In 1898, Coburn Haskell introduced the one-piece rubber cored ball which was universally adopted by 1901 after it proved so effective in the British and US Opens. These balls gave the average golfer an extra 20yds from the tee. They were constructed from a solid rubber core wrapped in rubber thread encased in a gutta percha sphere.

It was only in 1972, when Spalding introduced the first two piece ball, the Executive, was the basic Haskell design improved upon. At this time there was no standard size for golf balls and although Americans tended to use a larger sized ball, the smaller ball which was popular in the British Isles flew a lot better into the wind.

In 1921, the R&A and USGA standardised the size and weight of the ball. The weight of any ball cannot be greater than 1.620 ounces and the diameter of the ball must not be less than 1.680”.

When a golf ball is hit, the impact, which lasts less than a millisecond, determines the ball’s velocity, launch angle and spin rate, all of which influence its trajectory (and its behaviour when it hits the ground). The current R&A and USGA rules state that the maximum velocity of the ball can be no greater than 250ft per second.

Today there is a rich variety of golf balls to suit every individual game. Some offer better control, some offer greater distance and then there is a full range of balls along the scale between these two elements.

“What ball should I use?”A question we regularly get asked in the shop so, below, I have tried to give you an idea of the types of ball to help you select the best ball for you...

Beginners If you have only started golf, or are prone to losing the odd ball or four, what you want to look for is a two piece ball the characteristics being low compression and side spin reduction which suit the lower swing speeds of beginners and average golfers quite well. This type of ball is normally less expensive but gives maximum distance. The ball normally has a hard wearing outer cover made from surlyn which can withstand more ‘ribbed’ shots without too much damage to the ball. A few examples of the balls we hold in stock which would be suitable for you would be the Tayormade Burner, Nike Distance and Titleist NXT Extreme.

Mid Handicappers For those of you who still want distance but need more ‘feel’ and control around the greens, you would benefit more from a three piece ball. These balls also have a hard wearing outer cover, similar to the two piece ball, but have an additional elastic layer to allow for greater control and spin. Examples of the balls that would be suitable for you would be Titleist PTS Roll, Titleist PTS Carry or Srixon AD333.

Ladies As ladies generally have a slower swing speed than men, golf ball companies have designed balls specifically to suit lady golfers. These are normally two piece balls with a softer compression core, but hard outer cover to generate both power and distance. What these balls lack, however is the control that is available from the three piece balls suitable for mid handicappers. Examples of the ladies balls we currently stock are Callaway Pearl, Pinnacle Lady and Srixon Lady.

Single Figure Handicappers & Pros These players will undoubtedly be looking for maximum control around the greens as their natural swing speeds will ensure the distance. These players will be looking for balls with 4 pieces or more. Due to higher level of technology involved, these are the most expensive balls available. Unlike the other balls, the outer cover of these balls is softer and made from elastomer and includes two layers of elastic surrounding the central core. Examples of this type of ball is Titleist PROv1, Titleist PROv1x, Callaway IX, Nike One Black and Taylormade TP.

A bit of history...

The latest development in the golf ball market is the new Taylormade Penta TP ball, which is a 5 layered ball. The Penta TP should be available in our shops from 1st April, however as this ball has been selling so well, there is currently no stock available in Europe yet!”

The picture, courtesy of Canal Print Rioja SL and Possessive Media, shows the main eight winning team members, from left to right Paul Rooney, Rob Neill, Damien Corvan, Ryan Boal, Jim Hough, Nigel Hubert, Peter Deaves (Captain), and Gavin Riddall.

After seven long hard years of trying to achieve their ultimate goal, Katie Reilly´s Golf Society celebrated their first ever Vega Baja Premier Golf League winning in fine style with three 4-0 whitewashes and remaining undefeated throughout the entire season.

The overall pairs match scores of 16 wins, 13 defeats and 1 tie, plus 15 bonus points, seems convincing enough, but the teams were challenged and every match was well fought right to the end.

The penultimate match, against La Manga South at La Finca in February, was a case in point as at one stage around the turn Katie´s team were behind in all four matches only gaining the lead on the back nine or towards the end of the round, finally winning each for their 4-0 scoreline. The La Manga South team scored an impressive overall total of 246 stableford points which would have beaten any of the other teams in the League that day.

While the latter matches proved a tad more difficult and as a result produced lower scores, the first two rounds, at La Serena and La Manga, saw more conducive conditions and so had some very high scoring individual rounds. Peter Deaves managed 36 in the first round, with Jim Hough carding 35, and three others, Gavin Riddall, Paul Rooney and Ryan Boal all on 34. At La Manga in the second event, Rob Neill and Ryan Boal, both came out on top with

36 points apiece, but were ably supported by Gavin Riddall (35) and Jim Hough (34).

Whilst the team had the full support of the entire membership of Katie Reilly´s Golf Society and, of course, all patrons of Katie Reilly´s Irish Bar in cc Rioja, Villamartin, only nine players were required in the whole season and one of those was a last minute replacement in the final match, (substitute Adrian Hubert having the misfortune of being paired with his brother Nigel) meaning that the majority of the competition was played by just eight men, and indeed the first three matches had exactly the same four pairings, a quite remarkable achievement.

POSTSCRIPT When it came to the winning team photo, all eight main team members had been given instructions to turn up in regulation attire: white Katie Reilly polo shirts with black pin stripe, and black slacks. Regrettably the rigours of Christmas had taken their toll on bar owner Jim Hough who split his slacks on the morning, and without a suitable pair of replacements appeared in fawn trousers instead. With the computer wizardry at our disposal we were able to air brush the colour of his slacks, unfortunately we were unable to do anything about the extra inches – miracles really do take a little longer to perform!

Taylormade are introducing the new R9 SuperTri driver, which combines Flight Control Technology (FCT) and Movable Weight Technology™ (MWT®) with three movable weights in a 460cc head, marking the ultimate unification of TaylorMade’s major driver technologies with maximum size to deliver massive distance and forgiveness. The previous R9 460 driver had only FCT technology and the R9 driver had both FCT and MWT but only in a 420cc head. This new driver has combined the best of both previous models.

The R9 SuperTri was made possible by two crucial developments by TaylorMade engineers that saved enough weight to allow FCT and MWT to coexist in a 460cc head. The first is better, more widespread use of TaylorMade’s Ultra-Thin Wall technology throughout the clubhead. The second is a new, lighter FCT sleeve that does everything the former one did while weighing 3gms less.

The benefit of incorporating FCT and MWT into a 460cc head is enormous. The larger head is more forgiving, and its centre of gravity is 2mm further back in the head than the R9 driver, making it easier to launch the ball higher and with more spin, helping players gain more distance. At the same time, the inclusion of MWT with three weights promotes a side-to-side trajectory change of up to 75 yards.

Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) is also a crucial piece of the R9 SuperTri’s makeup. Though it’s milled onto the back of the clubface where it’s out of sight, ICT plays a critical role by dramatically increasing the area of the clubface that delivers fast ball speed, promoting more distance on off-centre hits.

Visually, the R9 SuperTri clubhead is a killer, thanks to its new shape and its black-on-black colour scheme, including a black PVD clubface last seen in the r7 SuperQuad.

The R9 SuperTri is equipped with a Fujikura Motore 60-gram shaft, which is five grams lighter than the Motore 65 used in the R9 driver. In addition to being lighter, the Motore 60 makes it more playable and launches the ball higher with more spin, which helps many players achieve longer carry for increased distance.

The R9 SuperTri and is the most advanced, highest-performing driver TaylorMade has ever developed. The distance producing power and shot straightening abilities created by the combined clubhead size, clubhead design, performance technologies and shaft specifications makes this a Driver that no golfer should be without.

This new Driver is already available in our shops, competitively priced at only €379.

TaylorMade introduce the newest model in the Burner Drivers range, the Burner Superfast.

TaylorMade’s new Burner SuperLaunch irons are specifically designed to be spectacularly forgiving and easy to get in the air.

Three years after unveiling Burner 07, the most successful driver in TaylorMade history, the next generation of this phenomenal franchise, named simply Burner SuperFast has been launched. Weighing just 284gms (an astounding 14gms less than the Burner 07 and Burner 09 drivers), Burner SuperFast is a speed demon, designed to deliver increased clubhead speed and superior distance.

The Burner SuperFast driver’s improved performance starts with a new 460cc clubhead shape that’s sleeker and more aerodynamic than past Burner drivers. This new head also boasts high MOI (moment of inertia) for tremendous forgiveness, and incorporates the largest clubface of any TaylorMade driver and is 14% larger than Burner 09’s clubface.

The larger face is important in light of the fact that the longer club-length of the Burner SuperFast driver, makes it more challenging for the average player to make square contact consistently and the larger face gives them more area to strike the ball with.

The Burner SuperFast face also features a new bulge and roll design that’s optimised to work with the higher MOI head to maximise forgiveness on off-centre hits. Additionally, the clubface incorporates TaylorMade’s renowned Inverted Cone Technology, which promotes faster ball speed on off-center hits.

Also included in the Burner SuperFast driver is TaylorMade’s proven Dual-Crown technology, which both lowers and pulls back the centre of gravity to promote a higher launch angle and increased spin.

Putting together all the elements of Taylormade’s newest version of SuperFast technology, you’ve got a driver that screams through the hitting zone to promote more pop at impact for more

clubhead speed and distance than any Burner driver ever has and that’s saying something. The best news is that all players can take advantage of Burner SuperFast’s speed and distance benefits, as the driver will also be available in a ladies version in its own colour palette.

This new Driver is already available in our shops, spectacularly priced at only €279 (the previous Burner model was priced at €329.

The revolutionary performance of TaylorMade’s Burner® iron made it the best-selling iron model in the United States, and has helped thousands of golfers elevate their iron games to an entirely new level. However, these irons were more suited to those golfers with a faster swing speed. The new Burner SuperLaunch irons are specifically designed to be spectacularly forgiving and easy to get in the air, allowing a certain segment of players – mainly slower swingers and low-ball hitters to get more distance. In addition, Burner SuperLaunch iron’s generous offset helps straighten a slice and promote a draw.

The irons are also engineered to deliver tremendous forgiveness from end-to-end (heel to the toe) and top to bottom (topline to leading edge). In fact, it’s the most forgiving iron ever from TaylorMade. That makes it a great iron for high-handicappers with patterns of inconsistent ball-striking. What’s more, Burner SuperLaunch irons boast the highest moment of inertia (MOI) of any TaylorMade iron ever, which means they will resist twisting on off-center hits and be more forgiving than just about any irons in TaylorMade’s lineup.

The Burner SuperLaunch irons feature a wide, multifunctional sole, which is key to establishing the low and deep centre of gravity location that makes every one of these irons so easy to get high in the air. However, each sole is strategically bevelled to reduce the degree of interaction with the turf. That means you get the low-deep centre of gravity positioning benefits of a large sole, yet it plays like a much smaller, narrower sole.

Like last season’s Burner irons, a single set of Burner SuperLaunch irons are divided into three sub-groups. The long irons have an extremely wide sole that helps them work through the turf effectively and lowers the center of gravity; thin faces to create more ball speed; and a lower profile to make them easier to hit. This shape helps make Burner SuperLaunch long-irons so much easier to launch at lower swing speeds. At the opposite end of the set, Burner SuperLaunch short-irons have a thinner sole, slightly thicker faces

and higher, more traditional face-height and profile, while the middle-irons are of medium-profile, about halfway between the traditional profiles of the short-irons and low-profile of the long-irons.

The new Burner SuperLaunch irons also incorporate Taylormade’s Inverted Cone Technology which was initially developed by them to expand the COR zone of the Taylormade Drivers. An expanded COR zone provides increased yardage, especially on mis-hits.

The most critical performance benefit of Burner SuperLaunch is how easily and how high they launch the ball. Slower swingers will find it a breeze to launch these irons on an extremely high flight and with the spin necessary to keep the ball in the air long enough to achieve significant added carry, and when the ball comes down it will land steeply and softly. In addition, Burner SuperLaunch irons incorporate a new TaylorMade groove design that conforms to the USGA’s new ruling on grooves, which will be enforced in high-level competition starting in 2010 and in recreational golf starting in 2024.

These new irons are due in to our shops on 1st April, priced at €525 for steel shafts and €699 for graphite mens and ladies.

PROS

Choose the right clubPersonally I prefer to use the most lofted club for most of my bunker shot, that being my 60 degree wedge. I find it easier to be more positive with more loft, as I feel that I can hit the shot with more acceleration.

Here is Ian Poulter hitting a bunker shot. Notice the full aggressive finish he is holding, remember the key is acceleration.

Here is Miguel Angel Jimenez, again notice the follow through position.

This is John Daly playing an aggressive bunker shot. See the similarity in all the finishes in the photos, which is the most important feature of the shot.

BASIC STEPS1. Open clubface aimed at the flag

2. Body should aim left (about 30 degrees) of target line

3. Feel relaxed in the setup, body should be free of tension

4. Make a normal swing along the line of the body

5. Aim to hit around an inch behind the ball, and imagine taking a shallow divot of sand out and onto the green

6. Follow through!

AccelerationA theme you need to pick up on right away is the sense of acceleration right through the shot. Good players are quite aggressive. Don’t let the fact that you may only want the ball to travel 10 or 15 yards cause you to ‘dolly’ the shot, decelerating the clubhead weakly into the sand. For a real sense of splashing the ball up and out of the trap, you need to commit yourself to releasing the club all the way to a finish.

Visualise what you want to happen, not what you are afraid will happen!

For further advice or lessons to help you out of the sand, contact us at The Great Golf Company on 968 575 419 or visit www.greatgolfco.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

Good Luck.

Louis Harrington PGA Professional

Joining the pro ranks has taught me the real value of short-game skills. Ball-striking is obviously important, but when you analyse the way that tournaments are won and lost, it all comes down to getting the ball into the hole: getting up and down. That’s why we spend so much time working on pitching, chipping, putting and sand play. So if you want to see any improvement in your own scoring, that’s what you MUST do.

Miguel Ángel Jiménez

Miguel Ángel Jiménez was born 5 January 1964 and is from Malaga, Costa Del Sol, Spain. His nickname is “The Mechanic”, although this is a sarcastic reference to his preference for driving, rather than repairing, high performance vehicles, especially his gleaming red Ferrari. He is married with two children.

One of seven brothers, he took up golf as a 15 year old.Jiménez turned professional in 1982, but his early attempts to gain a European Tour card faltered at the Qualifying School hurdle until in 1988, he finished sixth among the graduates at La Manga to earn his chance. He first played on the European Tour in 1988. His first win came at the Piaget Belgian Open in 1992. In 1994 he finished fifth on the European Tour Order of Merit. In both 1998 and 1999, he finished fourth, winning four tournaments including the prestigious Volvo Masters. In 1999 he also came second in the WGC-American Express Championship and made his Ryder Cup debut. In 1998, with the decline of Seve and the fluctuating form of José María Olazabal, Miguel was emerging as Spain’s leading player - at least until Sergio García’s arrival. In 1999, he made a successful defence of the Turespaña title, the first victory by a Spaniard in the Volvo Masters and his intrepid performance in the World Golf Championship at Valderrama, losing in a play-off to Tiger

Woods, enabled him to end the season in 21st place in the world rankings. In 2000, he had his best result at a Major at the US Open, at Pebble Beach. He tied for 2nd place with Ernie Els, 15 shots behind Tiger Woods. The following year he tied in 3rd place at the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes, 4 shots behind the overall winner David DuvallIn 2004 he once again bounced back from some modest seasons, notching up another fourth place finish on the Order of Merit, and winning four European Tour events, which was more than any other player and resulting in a top 20 Official World Golf Rankings position. He maintained his form into 2005, winning the Omega Hong Kong Open and the Celtic Manor Wales Open. A great team player, he won the Alfred Dunhill Cup in 1999 and 2000, the Seve Trophy in 2000 and was part of Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team in 2004 - where, when asked his requirements for The Team Room replied: “Some Rioja, an espresso machine and cigars” all of which were provided.

In 2005 he won the Spanish Pairs final, with Andrés Jiménez at La Cala Resort in Andalucia, Spain.2008 saw two more wins, earning Jiménez a spot on the 2008 Ryder Cup team. He finished the season ranked fourth on the Order of Merit. In February 2010, Jiménez won the 2010 Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February, beating European Number One, Lee Westwood in a playoff. “Like a good wine, with age I get better and better,” said Jiménez. “I feel comfortable on the golf course – that is key. I am not 25 or 30, I have just turned 46 but I’m still healthy and strong. I feel happy, can focus, then you can win.” Jiménez has now won 9 of his 16 European Tour titles in his 40s, and is the oldest player to win on the circuit since Mark O’Meara.Jimenez is well known for his love of the finer things in life such as wines and, of course, cigars which he’s rarely seen without whilst strutting on the golf course. He is currently the Tour Pro of Torrequebrada Golf Course in Benalmadena, Costa del Sol. Previously he had been affiliated to Hacienda Del Alamo in Murcia.

Mar Menor Golf

Page 10: ggc_minimag_web

A new star is born!

Situated in 10,000 hectares of Mediterranean woodland, this golf and country club lies in a secluded valley in the southern part of Alicante between the town of San Miguel de Salinas and the coast, with sea views of the Mediterranean and Mar Menor. You enter through a dramatic gorge, preserving the tranquillity and natural beauty of the valley revealed within. With low density housing it is an eco-friendly development surrounded by hills as it blends naturally into the landscape – indeed a world apart.

The par 71 course is designed by Cabell B. Robinson who is well renowned in the golf industry for designs such as La Reserva in Sotogrande, Praia d´El Rey in Portugal, and La Finca Cortesin on the Costa del Sol, which was the venue for the Volvo Matchplay event in 2009. When he sat down to plan the 6426 meter course layout, a major factor in his mind was blending the course with the indigenous Mediterranean surrounding to “make it look like an integrated part of the existing landscape.” The end result is a golf course that runs along a valley with towering hills, creating a feeling of intimacy and isolation – this is a quality not found, and not possible, at many other Spanish courses.

Cabell B. Robinson explained he wanted to “use the rich Mediterranean vegetation surrounding the course to give the development a beauty intrinsic to the spot that we have tried to preserve - thus the plants that were added to adorn the course are indigenous.” This is in stark contrast with the arid plants that are common place in Alicante/Murcia region interior landscape. The championship course is also set amidst the existing orange and lemon groves, giving a beautifully traditional sense to playing golf here.

So what about the course? The more elite golfer can take on the challenge of the 6426 meters from the back tees, but with five different tee platforms on each hole, golfers of all skill levels will enjoy their game here. The large greens are fast, undulating and sometimes intimidating, but unlike many new courses, Las Colinas can boast true putting surfaces, that are kept to impeccable standards. Indeed, a top PGA European Tour Pro who has spent time practising at Las Colinas ahead of Tour events, has echoed this, scoring the greens 5/5, and likening the quality of them to those encountered on Tour.

Other facilities on offer at Las Colinas include a clubhouse with restaurant and bar, with terraces overlooking the 18th green, a golf shop, well appointed locker rooms, and other sports facilities such as tennis and paddle courts, and a gymnasium. Located right by the clubhouse the large driving

range with natural grass tee area (complete with pyramids of balls ready for your use), practise bunkers, chipping green, and separate large putting green, allow you to sharpen up your game before you play. And the golf school at Las Colinas will be offering individual and group tuition programmes to suit all ages and standards. Accommodation will also be available on site for golfers, with 2 and 3 bed luxury apartments set in the orange groves and Mediterranean woodland.

Las Colinas de Campoamor is managed by Troon Golf, the world´s leader in upscale golf course management. With courses in 26 countries worldwide, Troon Golf are market leaders in providing an exceptional guest experience at each of their venues, enabling the golfer to play on the finest playing surfaces, experience incredible guest service, enjoy unmatched amenities, and take pleasure in exquisite dining.

Bruce Glasco, Senior Vice President and Managing Director EMEA for Troon Golf said, “From the moment you drive through the canyon style entrance the impact of the resort catches you straight away. I honestly believe Las Colinas will raise the bar for the standard of golf on the east coast of Spain.”

With the much anticipated opening in early Summer 2010, golfers are sure to flock to Las Colinas de Campoamor to experience this gem for themselves – Juan Alvarez Lozano, Golf Course Managing Director, and his team at Las Colinas, will be ready to welcome you warmly, and make your experience a memorable one.

REVIEWPLAYERS’A first hand look at the course and how it plays.

Commentary: Catherine Corry (15) and Ryan Boal (pro) Also playing were Lorraine Cox (27), Gavin Riddall (pro) and Karl Ormerod (Ex-PGA pro)

OverviewAlthough the resort is not yet open to the public, we were invited to come and try out the new golf course at Las Colinas. When you first arrive, you have to make it past the security guards at the entrance, and like all good venues ‘if your name’s not on the list, you’re not getting in!’ However, once safely inside the resort, you can see how impressive the place will be once it is all completed.

There are all the small touchs that make the event feel a little more special - a pyramid of TaylorMade range balls waiting for you on the practice ground, a selection of Las Colinas tees and pitchmarks with magnetic ball marker and Las Colinas water bottles in the buggy. Martin Eastgate, the Sales and Marketing Director and Jordi Palasí, Golf Operations Manager were both there to greet us before we headed off to play and Juan Álvarez Lozano, the Golf Course Managing Director was there to greet us as we came off the course, making us feel that little bit more special.

The course is set back into the hills behind Campoamor and uses the natural landscape to produce a beautifully scenic course. The day we played, it was a glorious sunny day and the ambience on the course very tranquil, with a feeling of a perfect isolation on a golfing paradise, away from the rest of the world who were getting on with their daily routine.

Commentary from the Men’s TeesEveryone wants to get a great drive off the 1st tee and at Las Colinas, its no exception. Don’t be tempted to take on the bunker on the left or you will find your second shot blocked to the green. Make sure you take enough club for your second shot to clear the front trap to this elevated green.

This is a great course for allowing you to open up your shoulders and let rip with the driver and the 2nd hole is perfect for allowing you to do just this. We all enjoyed letting one rip up the fairway.

The 3rd hole is the first par 5 you come across and if you want to make it home in two, the line from the tee is across the left hand bunker, however your second shot still needs to clear the water hazard which lurks at the front of the green, greedily waiting to receive your ball! Not easy for two, but this hole does provide you with a lay up area just in front of the green for a safer option.

Birdie time! This short par 4, 4th is where you can really start your charge – just be careful not to overhit or you could make the bunker at the rear of the green.

At the 5th get your spinmill wedges at the ready for this par 3. You tee off from an elevated tee spectacularly set amongst the trees aiming at a green 70 feet below the tee. This is definitely a hole where furthest from the pin should be buying the beers!

At the 6th hole, stop for a moment to enjoy the magnificent view before taking the opportunity to open your shoulders again and give your driver an almighty wallop. Big hitters will be able to fly the two fairway bunkers leaving only a short flick onto the green.

If you decided to walk rather than travel by buggy, there is a long walk from the 8th green to the 9th Tee. Although it is quite a short par 4, this hole defends itself well with a minefield of bunkers in the middle of the fairway.

After successfully completing the front nine, you are rewarded with a nice easy start to the back nine with a short par 3. However, choose your club wisely as the tiered green could play havoc with your plans for a birdie putt!

Now the fun really begins with the par 5 11th, and what a monster of a par 5 it is. It is an unquestionable 3 shot hole with a dog leg to the right. You also need to avoid the huge bunker on your second shot if you want to escape with a par.

The 13th is another awesome par 4 with a dogleg right and bunkers everywhere! A fade off the tee is the shot to play so you can avoid the traps and reach the huge green with a testing spine running down the middle.

You need to keep your wits about you for this 16th tee shot. There are bunkers on the left and right just begging for your ball, but if you get a good shot away down the fairway, and catch the slope, you will be rewarded with an extra 50 yards run.

Well, coming onto the 17th hole, I have played some long par 3s, but this hole is huge! On the day we played, I lazered the hole from the black tees and the distance to the pin position was a very daunting 249 yards. Boy were we glad there was no wind in play that day! Great challenging hole and what a testing way to start bringing you home to the clubhouse. This could be a card spoiler!

For the brave, this 18th hole could be a birdie chance, but with it being the last hole, and a water protected green this could be another card spoiler if you get last hole jitters. If you get a good drive away, the green is reachable in two, but only if you have the nerve!

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day off the men’s tees, and I can easily see Las Colinas hosting a professional tournament in the not too distant future. The greens are such a pleasure to putt on, fast and true and this is definitely a course I would recommend to players of all levels, as the 5 separate tee markers makes the course playable for all. Personally, I can’t wait to play it again.

Commentary from the Ladies TeesThe daunting aspect on the 1st hole is the Out of Bounds on the right hand side, which unfortunately I managed to cross. Your second shot needs to be a fairly strong shot as the green is slightly elevated and is protected at the front by bunkers, this bunker protection being a very recurring theme through the course!

The 3rd hole is the first par 5. Send your tee shot out to the right hand side of the fairway which then doglegs left. Following your second shot and depending on how good a second shot you have hit, you have a choice to lay up with your third shot or to go for the green over the lake. A very enjoyable hole.

There is a toilet block at the 5th Tee (always important to know!). Despite bunkers on the right and water on the left, there is a clear path to the green provided you don’t let yourself get distracted by your peripheral vision.

The 7th hole is a wonderful par 3 where the hole is surrounded by trees – you walk along a short path through the trees up onto the elevated Tee box. Depending on where the pin is, the overhang from some of the trees can make it difficult to see the pin, from the Ladies tee, but the green below is quite open. After your tee shot, you meander along a path through the trees to a set of steps which you need to descent to get to the green. Altogether a beautiful setting for this hole.

The journey to the 8th hole past the men’s tees provides some spectacular views as you start to come back down into the valley. This hole has quite a few bunker traps either side of the fairway, but despite getting caught in one on the right hand side, I was still able to reach the green with my second shot out of the bunker.

The 10th hole is a pitch hole in the true sense of the word, at only 83m in length, the challenge with this hole will depend on the position of the pin, as the green has a split level which could induce a very irritating three putt!

Just when you thought it was getting easier, you follow the shortest hole on the course with the longest, the 11th - a monstrous par 5 at 476m. If you get a good drive away, you could catch the downslope which helps shorten the hole, however for your second shot, the fairway is well guarded by bunkers, as is the green!

There is another toilet block situated beside the 12th tee box and this holes presents with a lovely wide fairway to let you really go for it with your drive.

When you come to stand on the 13th tee, all you can see is a sea of white sand in front of you – it looks very daunting, but don’t let it put you off.

The correct club selection is key for the par three 14th hole as there is water to the left and rear, a gully at the front of the green and bunkers to the right.

Your drive from the 16th tee box needs to cross over the edge of the lake on the left hand side, how close you go to it depends on how daring you are! Aim for the bunkers on the left and you have a safer but longer shot into the green.

The 17th is the longest and last of the par 3s on the course. There are bunkers to the left and right of the green and depending on the position of the pin, it could be very well protected and the safe shot to the green could leave you a very long putt indeed.

The final hole is a very enjoyable par 5. There is a nice open fairway to get away a good drive and as the lake is on the right hand side of the fairway protecting the green, your second shot needs to keep up the left hand side of the fairway. Don’t think that this will ensure you a clear path to the green with your third – the water is dangerously close to the green and this could be a devastatingly destructive final hole!

Altogether, the course is challenging but thoroughly enjoyable and you have the satisfaction of being rewarded when you hit a good shot. Around the greens requires a delicate touch when you could be chipping up a bank, down a bank, on a downhill or uphill lie and you also need to judge the speed of the greens or you could cause yourself some trouble.

I definitely want to go back!

The challenging 15th hole

After three years of development, TaylorMade have launched the

new Penta TP, the first five-piece golf ball to reach the market.Normally, when choosing a ball, you would take into account that there is a tradeoff between maximum distance and maximum spin around the greens. Golf ball technology has progressed so that there is less of a tradeoff, and TaylorMade claims to have eliminated it with the Penta TP.

Taylormade have designed the ball to give better player performance in five key areas – driving, long irons, mid irons, short irons and around the green. The ball is especially of benefit to low handicappers and golf professionals as the promise of better control around the greens goes some way to eliminate the effect of the new USGA and R&A groove rule.

What are the benefits of a five layered ball?

1. The Outer Layer - “Cover” The soft urethane cover promotes higher than average spin rate for wedge play from 100 yards, to give more control around the greens.

2. The Second Layer - “Outer Mantle” Layer two, the outer mantle, promotes optimum spin off the short irons to stop the ball quickly. TaylorMade also claims that this layer is of great benefit to players with a slower swing, as it helps achieve a higher ball speed and greater distance.

3. The Third Layer - “Middle Mantle” This mantle promotes a mid-launch trajectory and medium spin off the medium irons and helps prevent ballooning (which ultimately leads to distance loss).

4. The Fourth Layer - “Inner Mantle” This layer promotes soft feel, high launch and low spin off the long irons for exceptional distance and high, soft-landing flight that helps the ball sit quickly on the green.

It consists of a fast material, which helps slower swing speed players generate more ball speed and distance, because although they don’t swing fast enough to activate the core, they are able to activate the three layers between the core and cover including the inner mantle, which is the deepest of the three.

5. The Fifth Layer - “Core” The vital layer of the Penta is the core, which employs the softest, lowest compression material found in the ball. These characteristics promote low spin and a high launch at impact, resulting in longer distances off the tee.
