Purpose
This series of clinics focuses on helping you to be ready to open in five days time!!
During the clinic today, we will focus on ‘getting back to basics’, providing a reminder of things you should have in place.
Today’s clinic is our last before the majority of your facilities re-open, so please use it as opportunity for to ask questions and share ideas and best practice.
Please email questions in advance of these clinics to [email protected]
Using our operational experience including our health and safety knowledge, we have developed a Re-mobilisation Action Plan that may help your organisation and managers to ask themselves the right questions and implement appropriate action.
Please ask questions and please share any advice that you have.
We will be sharing the Q&A’s from each clinic

Questions and Best
Practice Tips
Over to you – your Q&As
Questions received
• Question:
Can I open our spa pool on 25th July?
• Response:
Yes you can, but you may want to consider if it is economically or practically viable to open. It must be done safely and in accordance with social distancing guidelines. PWTAG have issued comprehensive guidelines and checklists for re-opening spas – click here.
• Question:
What are your views on members using towels in the gym?
• Response:
Ukactive state “Towels/’sweat towels’ will not be taken onto the gym floor/into the studio” in their guidance –click here. If you are going to permit them, we recommend you advise members they are to keep them on their person and not use them to sit on or wipe down equipment.
Questions received
• Question:
Is it okay to use floor fans in the gym and studio?
• Response:
Yes, provided you aren’t using them as a substitute for optimum ventilation/fresh air. If you have good sufficient fresh air, the fans, strategically placed, may help ensure it is circulated in the area.
• Question:
Do you think it would be wise to invite the EHO in before we open?
• Response:
There is no harm in asking, but we suspect they will be busy. They should take a proportionate approach to supporting businesses to be Covid-19 Secure, but can take enforcement action too.
Questions received
• Question:
If a class / session is outdoors, can it be more than 6 people?
• Response:
You are now permitted to run classes for up to 30 people (including the instructor). You will need to ensure a ‘delivery plan’ is developed for each class.
Team sports for up to 30 people can take place in accordance with the relevant NGB guidance.
CIMSPA have provided an update – click here
• Question:
We’ve got a small, outdoor playground. Can this be opened?
• Response:
Yes it can, as long as risk assessments have been conducted and you follow the guidance on managing playgrounds and outdoor gyms – click here
Questions received
• Question:
I’m still confused as to whether we should be using 3m2 as suggested by the government, or 6m2 as suggested by Swim England when calculating bather loads. What should we do?
• Response:
Whilst Swim England have acknowledged the 3m2 in the government guidance, they suggest this is a starting point. You will need to risk assess your pool(s) and sessions.
In their Guidance for Operators, Swim England recommend minimum m2 per bather to achieve social distancing for various sessions. See here
• Question:
Can we use vending machines and arcade machines?
• Response:
Yes, but ensure they are kept clean (provide sanitiser) and encourage cashless payment
Questions received
• Question:
Can you provide clarification on air circulation in rooms?
• Response:
You need to optimise ventilation:
− Maximum occupancy limited to provide a minimum of
100sqft (9.29m2) per person
− Increasing ventilation rate (providing 100% fresh air)
with fans running and operating it 24 hours a day
− Checking whether ventilation systems need adjusting
to ensure at least 20l/s/p
− Opening doors and windows frequently
• Note: the 100sqft (per person) relates to ventilation in
the facility overall; 2m social distancing must still be
considered – capacity will be the lowest number
• Check with your HVAC engineer if unsure
• Rooms with no ventilation should not be used
Questions received
• Question:
Can you provide clarification on air circulation in swimming pools?
• Response:
Swim England state:
“The air circulation systems within pool halls are
designed to undertake at least four complete air
changes every hour. Alongside this addition of fresh
air our pool hall air circulation systems are
designed to remove the air above the surface,
which in turn should assist in removing airborne
transmission of viruses.”
There is further, more detailed guidance in their
Guidance for Operators - see here
Questions received
• Question:
Why do foam pits have to be closed and are both trampolines & climbing walls above foam pits included in this?
• Response:
Our view is that foam pits would be really difficult to keep clean, in the same way as ball pools and soft play. If someone were infected, the pits could easily harbour the virus.
The government guidance doesn’t specifically say foam pits must be closed and we are not saying that either.
However, if you want to keep them open, you would need to conduct a risk assessment and consider how you are going to clean the foam between each user.
Please bear in mind that the government guidance states:
“the only means of minimising contact transmission is cleaning of equipment after every user”
