Supplies - No, it’s not necessary to buyanything more than a plain, soft-bristledtoothbrush and basic dental floss, but the fact

is that kids like toothbrushes that play music, light up, or are decorated with their favorite TVcharacter. Take your kids to the store, and letthem pick out the supplies. Hopefully, they’llbe much more excited over brushing theirteeth if they’re excited about their toothbrushand toothpaste.

Another option is to try a power toothbrush.Manual toothbrushes are just not as effective(or as fun). Kids are intrigued by the rotatingor oscillating bristle action and the exciting

noises. Today, most battery-powered modelsare still relatively inexpensive, and they comein fun character versions as well.

Give your child a tablet to chew that will turnareas on the teeth colorful that have not beenproperly brushed. This technique will clearlyshow your child the effects of not brushingproperly and motivate him or her to brushmore thoroughly. If your kids brush but notlong enough, set a timer. Grab the egg timerout of the kitchen, and set it for two minutes.

Then have your kids brush until it dings.

Make Oral Care Fun - Inspire your kids to brushtheir teeth by making it a fun activity ratherthan a chore. Invent a game or a song toaccompany tooth brushing. Show enthusiasmso that brushing their teeth is something yourkids will want to do. Pretending to be blindedby their sparkling white teeth often bringslaughs. Reward cooperation with much praiseand keep looking for ways to incorporate theelement of play.

Make it a FamilyAffair  - Brushyour teethalongside yourkids, andthey’re likely tomimic yourteeth brushinghabits. Stick toa schedule.Kids like

routine, so setregular teeth

brushing times, and stick to them. Before long,it’ll just become a part of their day.

For many of us, our pets are a loving part of our

family. And just as it is with humans, dentaldisease is a common health problem for dogs andcats. It can lead to bad breath; swollen, bleedinggums; loose teeth; difficulty eating; and evenmore severe problems. But you can avoid theseproblems by regularly visiting your veterinarianfor professional exams and cleanings and bycaring for your pet’s teeth at home. Here aresome steps and hints for brushing your pet’steeth:

• Ideally start oral care when your pet is stillyoung. With an adult, relax and realize it may

take a month to introduce toothpaste andtoothbrush.

• Have your pet sit then massage or gentlystroke the cheeks for several seconds everyday.

• Introduce toothpaste by dabbing it on a treat

and giving it to your pet—repeat for severaldays. Dab pet toothpaste on a small toothbrushand let your pet lick it off—repeat for severaldays.

• Dab pet toothpaste on a small toothbrush and

put the toothbrush into your pet’s mouth for afew seconds. Gradually increase to 15-30

seconds, still without brushing.• Start with the upper lip, gently lifting and

pulling back so your pet “smiles.”

• Dab pet toothpaste on a toothbrush and brushone tooth in a slow rhythm from the gum to thetooth. Gradually increase to brushing severalteeth.

• Over the next few days gradually increasebrushing time to 1 minute on the upper teeth, and 1 minute on the lower teeth.

• If your pet tolerates only a short period of brushing, concentrate on upper, outer molars.

• Praise your pet.
