SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSThese accessories are to be installed in accordancewith the current edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations(BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations) and appropriate statutory regulations. In the Republic of Ireland the installation must be inaccordance with the ETCI National Rules for Electricalinstallations ET 101.

    4. When mounting flat plate accessories, for the bestresults and visual appearance, it is recommendedthat prior to installation, the mounting surfacebeneath the accessory frontplate is first preparedto ensure that it is flat and all high spots have beenremoved.

    5. Certain accessories may require that the top andbottom lugs in 1 gang, 4 lug boxes, are bentinwards and out of the way to ensure the correctinstallation within the box.

    6. Always use cable of the correct rating and type.7. The layout of the terminal connections may differ

between fittings, carefully check the location of theterminal connections before wiring.

    9. Secure the accessory to the wall by means of thefixing screws provided, positioning the cables inthe box so as to avoid them being trapped.

    10. Replace the appropriate fuse, or switch on theappropriate circuit breaker. Switch on the mainsisolator switch.

IMPORTANT NOTICE WIRING COLOUR CHANGESAs from 1st April 2004 new installations in theU.K. could be wired using the new EU harmonisedcolours for the supply conductors of twin andearth cable:

When used on a ring main there will be two supplycables. Connect both of the cables to the sameterminals.

For FCUs with flex outlets, pass load cable throughoutlet before connecting to switch. Ensure cable clampis fitted and tightened across outer sheath of cable.

TELEPHONE SOCKETS1. Master sockets should only be fitted by an

authorised engineer.2. Secondary sockets are for adding extensions. These

may be from a master socket or from anothersecondary socket. The procedure is the same forboth arrangements. The maximum number ofextension sockets is normally 5.

    3. The unit is suitable for mounting on a 1 gang flush mounting box (wall box) with a minimum depth of 25mm.

    4. On the reverse side of the socket there are tworows of terminals numbered 1 to 6. Terminals areconnected using 4 core telephone cable.Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the master socket areconnected to terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 on thesecondary socket. As long as the same cablecolour is used for the same terminal on eachsocket, the actual colours used are not important.

    5. Terminals will either be of the screw connectors orinsulation displacement connectors (IDC). To attachthe wire to IDC type terminals, position the wire asshown in Fig. 1, leaving 12mm overhanging.

Press the wire into the connector using the toolprovided, and remove any excess wire.

    6. Telephone sockets fitted with metal front platesare fitted with earth terminals. The earthterminals on the socket should be connected tothe earth terminal in the wall box by means of ashort length of copper wire. If the wire is bare, itcould be sleeved with green/yellow sleeving.

CO-AXIAL AND SATELLITE SOCKETSConnect the cables as shown in the wiring diagram.Carefully slit the outer cable sheath and peel back tothe required length. Remove the excess and exposethe underlying copper braided screen.Roll the braided screen over the top of the outersheath and trim back a short length of innerinsulation to expose the centre conductor. Slackenthe screws that retain the cable clamp and also thescrew that clamps the centre conductor.Position the cable so that the section covered by thebraided screen sits beneath the cable clamp and thecentre conductor sits within the centre conductor

terminal. Tighten the screws on the cable clamp andtighten the centre conductor terminal screw. Ensurethat the braided screen does not come into contactwith the centre conductor terminal. In the case of accessories having metal front platesand fitted with earth terminals, the earth terminal onthe accessory should be connected to the earthterminal in the wall box by means of a short length ofcopper wire. If this wire is bare, it should be sleevedwith green/yellow sleeving. For 2 gang sockets, connect to each socketseparately, as described above.

WIRING DIAGRAM FOR CO-AXIAL SOCKETS WIRING DIAGRAM FOR SATELLITE SOCKETS

RJ45 DATA OUTLETSThese accessories require a minimum box depth of35mm. On the reverse of the accessory, remove the topcover to expose the terminal connectors. There are tworows of terminals, each having a number of colourcoded connectors. Determine whether the wiringscheme is T568A or T568B and use the appropriatecolour code guide to identify the correct position of eachof the cables. To attach the wire to the terminalconnectors, position the wire as shown in Fig 2. Pressthe wire into the connector using the tool provided. Onceall cables are connected, remove any excess wire andreplace the top cover. In the case of accessories having

metal front plates and fitted with earth terminals, theearth terminal on the accessory should be connectedto the earth terminal in the wall box by means of ashort length of copper wire. If this wire is bare, itshould be sleeved with green/yellow sleeving.

1 AND 2 GANG BLANK PLATESIf using the blank plate to cover the position of anexisting accessory, ensure that any remainingcables are isolated and terminated at a convenientjunction. Where possible remove the cables frominside the wall box. If the cable cannot be isolated, ensure that the bare ends of the live and neutralcables are terminated separately, within suitablysized terminal blocks. The terminal blocks shouldthen be covered with insulating tape for additionalsafety. Any earth cables must be sheathed ingreen/yellow sleeving and connected to the earth

terminal in the wall box. In all instances, it isimportant that the earthing circuit is maintainedwhen removing an accessory.

If the accessory to be removed is on a ring main it isimportant that, after removal, the connections for thering circuit are maintained. This can be achieved byconnecting all the live cables together, and then all theneutral cables together with suitably sized terminalblocks. The terminal blocks should then be coveredwith insulating tape for additional safety. All earthcables must be sheathed in green/yellow sleeving andconnected to the earth terminal in the wall box.

In the case of metal blanking plates fitted with earthterminals, the earth terminal on the plate should beconnected to the earth terminal in the wall box bymeans of a short length of copper wire.*BARE COPPER MUST BE SHEATHED INGREEN/YELLOW SLEEVING

    4. Re-connect the power to the circuit and test operation.5. It is normal for a faint buzzing sound to be heard from

a dimmer switch. This is from the radio interferencesuppression coil and is no case for concern.

CIRCUIT AND OTHER EQUIPMENT COMPATIBILITY To ensure optimum performance and reliability is obtainedfrom this dimmer switch during its lifetime the followingrecommendations and precautions should be followed asappropriate to the type of dimmer:

CIRCUITSIt is recommended that the lighting circuit incorporatingthis dimmer is protected by a 6A or up to a 10Amaximum Type B miniature circuit breaker.Only use two-way (push) dimmers in two-way switchingcircuits. Only use one two-way dimmer in a two-wayswitching circuit.

LAMPSThese dimmer switches are suitable for dimmingincandescent lamps and dimmable CFL lamps only and are NOT to be used with Fluorescent lamps,Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps of any description or motor loads. When using mains voltage Tungsten Halogen lamps, it isessential that these types of lamps incorporate internalfuses and are from quality lamp manufacturers. The useof inferior low quality lamps without internal fuses is notrecommended and will invalidate any guarantee orwarranty supplied with the dimmer switch.

Unless Compact Fluorescent (CFL) lamps are markedDimmable they must NOT be used with these dimmerswitches. Use of non-dimmable CFL lamps maypermanently damage the dimmer or the lamp and willinvalidate any guarantee or warranty supplied with thedimmer switch. It is recommended that a maximum number of 5dimming CFL lamps only should be connected to anindividual dimmer switch.

LOW VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERSOnly use Low Voltage dimmers with transformers. Donot use mains voltage dimmers.Always check transformer compatibility BEFOREinstallation and if in doubt always check with thedimmer Helpline or the transformer manufacturerThe Low Voltage dimmer switches use leading edge(phase delay) dimming technology and must thereforebe used with compatible good quality dimmableelectronic or wire-wound transformers. Trailing edge(phase cut) dimmable transformers must not be used.

Do NOT mix electronic and magnetic transformers onthe same dimmer switch. It is recommended that a maximum number of 5 LowVoltage transformers should only be connected to anindividual dimmer switch. It is recommended that dimmable electronictransformers be loaded to at least 70% of their ratedmaximum wattage.

LOADING TABLEPLATE SIZE No. of Dimmers Max. each Dimmer Min.each Dimmer Total per Plate
