There are countless ways for you to get involved at the IOP. Whether it’s securing a paid summer internship in D.C., attending Speaker Series events and Fellows seminars, leading a civic engagement project in Chicago, or going on a student trip to Cuba, there are opportunities for everyone.

Events | Attend free events hosted by the IOP for leaders and other political actors to share their experiences and insights on key issues of the day. Recent guests include Vice President Joe Biden, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, author Ta-Nehisi Coates, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Rand Paul, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Sen. Bernie Sanders and more.

Event Ambassadors | Help the IOP execute event logistics, event promotion, and ensure that our guest speakers enjoy their visit to campus.

International Policy Program | A program run by students interested in international policy, featuring lunch-time seminars on worldwide events.

News & Views | A student-led event series that delves deeply into issues of the day, giving students the opportunity to invite experts to discuss current hot-button topics.

Chicago Style | A student-led series that provides UChicago students the chance to engage with prominent Chicago-based elected officials, policymakers, political operatives, journalists, lobbyists or organizers in meaningful, off-the-record conversations.

Seminars | IOP Fellows lead weekly non-credit, off-the-record seminars on issues of local, national, and international importance.

Office Hours | Students can meet one-on-one with IOP Fellows in 20-minute sessions to discuss everything from career advice to news of day.

Fellows Ambassadors | Students canapply to become an ambassador to IOP Fellows, assisting with their IOP engagements, serving as their guides to student life, and getting mentored by some of the most successful practitioners in politics and public service.

Get A Stipend | Apply for a $2,000 stipend to support substantive summer internships that students have secured on their own.

Career Treks | Every year the IOP hosts student trips haved ranged from Chicago to California, from our nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. to the state capital of Springfield, Illinois. Each trip offers groups of 10-20 students the chance to meet with practitioners, learn about organizations and government agencies, and explore internship and career opportunities.

Public Service Career Advising | Get advice on how to pursue a career in your chosen field, from building a resume to the secrets of networking.

civic engagementCivic Engagement Programs | The IOP offers students opportunities to engage meaningfully in Washington Park, Back of the Yards, Little Village, and other neighborhoods throughout Chicago. IOP students volunteer their time helping immigrants prepare for the citizenship exam, providing Chicago Public School students with peace circles and conflict resolution training, supporting Chicago’s veterans, and leading campus voter engagement efforts. These student-developed and –led civic engagement programs provide important resources to vulnerable Chicagoans.

TechTeam | TechTeam provides tech training to IOP students and assistance to local government and non-profits with their data and digital strategies.

Women in Public Service | WPSP provides training, mentorship and support to women interested in public service.

Leaders of Color | Student-organized professional leadership skills development and mentorship program for first and second year students of color.

Shriver Program for Leadership in Public Service | A yearlong program for students to gain practical training in public service leadership, based on the example, achievements and methods of Sargent Shriver. Workshops in the Fall Quarter, training in the Winter & Spring Quarters, guaranteed paid summer internships relevant to the Shriver program.
